Rise of the Haudenosaunee

This is a different kind of AAR. Not purely historical, as that would be boring. i have made some tweaks to the game to make it playable. Most notably, the total pops of the original provinces the Iroquois start with, they are severly underpopulated so i added 1000 to all their pops. As well, I gave them a colonial dynamism. They get 2 colonists a year. As well, I gave them 2 port cities, Cheasapeake, and Manhattan, mainly to facilitate the gathering of colonists. Many may decry these tweaks as ruining the difficulty of playing a nation like the Iroquois, but I would say this: They cannot deal directly with European nations, cannot change religion, and really, can only communicate between themselves and Aztecs/Incas(provided they find them)They cannot use cavalry and artillery,or build any improvements. One more thing, I gave them a generic conquistador to start with, basic stats. He is to allow them to expand east. As for dates, I shall use the actual dates(ie, Jan 1 1492). Hopefully, this will be an ok AAR. It is my first, so forgive me if i make a few mistakes. Wel, here goes...

The Beginning: Colonies...

In the beginning, The Haudenosaunee(Iroquois, but Iroquois is insult) were rulers over all they surveyed. They had formed the mighty Confederacy, including the Cayuga,Ondaida,Seneca,Onondaga and Mohawk. They were respected by many who lived around their lands. Many wished to join the Confederacy, but few were worthy. Others, jealous of the power the Confederacy held, did not wish to join. They would violently resist the moves of the Haudensaunee . This is the story of the Haudenosaunee, and what befell them

[OOC, ok how's that for a preview?I will use actual Province names, to avoid confusion. I will now begin for real]

1492-

Jan 1 1492: One of our brave warriors, Huron, marches off at the head of a masiive war party, some 5500 men strong. He is to search to the east, to see what lies there. He sets off from Mohawk, capital of the Confederacy, heading towards the Catskills. He arrived after many moons had passed(Feb 16) and was engaged by hostile warriors. After several days of fighting, the enemy warriors fled into the bush(Killed 400, lost 28). Immediately, some traders were sent out, to increase the Confederacy lands.
Huron, after gathering water, marched towards Conneticut

March 2 1492: Huron arrives in Conneticut, and some enemy warriors ambush his war party. 700 arrayed against 5400. Yet the enemy fight to the death, and after a weekk of hard fighting, the last falls.Huron rests, sending a messenger back to the Confederacy, advising them to send some traders here. Huron then moves on into parts unknown...

April 24 1492: Word is sent, a trading post has been set in the Catskills

May 26 1492: Horrors! It appears that not every hostile warrior was killed. Several ambushed the traders settling Conneticut, killing them all. The Confederacy is unfazed, ordering another sent. They also order a settler be sent to Delaware.
Huron arrives in Massachussetts, engaging hostile warriors within hours of his arrival.200 hostile warriors killed, with no loss of Confederate warriors.Huron continues Eastward.

July 2 1492: A trader is sent to Massachussetts, in hopes of expanding the trade of the Confederacy

July 28 1492: Wonderful news. A new colony sits at the mouth of the Delaware River. And our traders have set up in Massachussetts

(To be continued)

Rise of the Haudensaunee(Iroquois) continued

(continued)

Aug 25 1492: Huron reaches Penobscot, and massacres the hostile natives who meet him. The traders sent to Massachussetts send no word. The worst is feared. Huron continues East

Sept 2 1492: The heads of the traders are sent back to Mohwak. The Confederacy ponders sending another. But decides to wait.

Nov 2 1492: Huron arrives in Bangor. More war, more bloodshed. Why do these men resist us? Huron feels he is close to his goal. He rests, and on Nov 8th, he leaves, heading eastward, ever eastward.

1493-

Jan 2 1493: A group of settlers gathers, marching off for Bangor.

Feb 1 : Huron reaches Micmac. Will these fools never learn? 100 hostile warriors die, and Huron moves on(Feb 8)

March 2: Bangor is ours. With the founding of a new colony, we of the Confederacy salute Huron.

April 19: To quell fears of possible raids, warriors are gathered in Cheasapeake and Manhattan. 6000 warriors are to guard Cheasapeake, while 7000 will guard Manhattan

The Great Lake: Discovery of the Bay of Fundy April 22 1493

June 22 : The warriors have finally arrived, and watch over both Cheasapeake and Manhattan

July 6: We wish to see our new discovery properly controlled. As such, we sent some settlers to colonise Fundy. Huron is getting impatient, and heads south from Fundy

Aug 24: Huron arrives in a place called "Nova Scotia". What is this place?

Sept 5: Success, a colony sits in Fundy. We have heard stories from the locals of an island to the east. But we cannot reach it in our canoes. It shall remain untouched, for now...

1494-

Jan 1: A new colonist is sent to this "Nova Scotia" in hopes of securing a foothold in the East. Huron sends word he will move to the north of Fundy, in hopes of finding more. Out of fear, the Confederacy sends an army of 5500 warriors to guard Fundy. They have a long way to go from Mohawk...

March 1: The colonists sent to Nova Scotia, they are massacred. Another group shall be sent as soon as possible

April 11: Huron arrives in Gaspesie, he will not rest. He heads back towards Mohawk...

April 14: Betrayal. Before he can leave, Huron is beset by 100 hardened warriors. Huron fights desperately, and on the 19, leaves the province. A trader will be sent as soon as one is available.

July 3: Another group is sent to Nova Scotia

July 4: "Beware of the chief who brings no fur" is a saying used by many a Mohawk chief. The war party sent to guard Fundy is attacked by the very people they were sent to protect.

July 11: The call goes out. Fundy is lost, destroyed. Our war party, beaten. This tragedy signals a dramatic change in Confederacy policy. No native will be left alive. All will be killed off so that this will not happen again. As soon as the war party regroups, they will be sent back to Fundy, and the butchers will pay dearly

July 15: Huron arrives in Rimouski, and sends word of a place called Quebec. Interesting. That is near the territories of the Ottawa nation. When Huron hears of the slaughter in Fundy, he attacks the inhabitants of Rimouski. After several days (July 20) Huron sets off, north, to see if he cannot find this "Quebec"

Aug 7: The war party that was beaten in Fundy arrives in Micmac. They regroup, and plan their revenge

Sept 3: Slaughter in Nova Scotia. That is it. The Confederacy passes a new law: The Law of Sadness and Anger. It demands that any and all province not under Confederacy rule, any natives in the province are to be killed. None are to be left alive.

Sept 5: The war party, having regrouped in Micmac heads out to Fundy. There shall be much blood shed this time.

Oct 16: Victory, but not complete victory in Fundy. Another attack, and they shall all be dead. Huron finds Kebec. He rests, as he is getting tired from all his explorations.

Oct 24: The last butcher in Fundy falls. On to Nova Scotia...

Rise of the Haudensaunee(continued)

(continued)

Nov 11 1494: Nova Scotia is reached. Battle begins. Agan, the war party retreats. That leader must be taught about the dangers of cowardice

1495-

Jan 1: A group is sent to Kebec, in hopes of establishing peaceful relations with the Ottawa Nations in the area.Another attack into Nova Scotia will begin shortly

Jan 22-26: Finally, after a pitched battle, Nova Scotia is cleared of any hostile natives. It will be a good place for a colony, but more settlers are needed.

Mar 1: A new colony sits in Kebec. Huron will wait there until we are sure no natives will attack our fledgling colony

July 7: Settlers are sent to a now vacant Nova Scotia

Sept 7: Nova Scotia is now a part of the Confederacy

1496-

Jan 1: Traders are sent to Fundy, to increase our trade in the area

Mar 1: The traders have set up in Fundy. It is decided that a new trader will be sent to Rimouski next. Now all that is needed is a trader...

Aug 25: The trader is here, he is gone off to Rimouski

Oct 25: Failure in Rimouski, it is decided to improve Kebec, to allow Huron to move on

1497-

Jan 5: A settler is sent to Kebec. Huron grows very impatient, feeling he is wasting away.

Mar 5: Success in Kebec. Huron pleads for more to be sent, but it is decided that more colonies along the coast is desired more. As such, Huron is ordered back to Rimouski, to await new settlers there. The war party in Nova Scotia is to be split in 2, with one remaining in Nova Scotia, the other, for Kebec. Huron is to wait until this war party, led by a coward, Dances with Bears, arrives. the other party, led by White Fox, is to stay in Nova Scotia.

Jun 11: Dances with Bears is replaced upon arrival by Onondaga. Huron moves to Rimouski, arriving after several moons(July 16).

July 16: Settlers are sent to Rimouski. Huron hopes he can protect them until they settle

Sep 8: Ships are seen outside of Manhattan harbour. The inhabitants of Manhattan grow frightened, and begin building a "Great Canoe". In Chesapeake, another Great Canoe also begins construction

Oct 7: Huron could not watch over the settlers in Rimouski all the time. That 2 hour rest, that was all that was needed. The colonists never had a chance

1498-

Jan 2: A trader is sent to Rimouski. They must succeed

March 2: Success. Huron moves to Gaspesie

April 2: Huron arrives in Gaspesie. All this travel is weakening him greatly. He spends much time now, resting.

June 12: The 2 Great Canoes are built. More will be built, but not at this time. It requires too many men to build them, and crops suffer as a result.

July 10: Settlers are sent to Gaspesie. Huron only hopes he can rest after he is done here.

Sept 10: Success. Huron will rest here a while.

Oct 9: Strange news indeed. It seems some of our brothers have begun practicing ancient, forbidden rituals. There is fear throughout the Confereracy that some revolts may occur[Wave of Obscurantism]

Feb 3: Huron arrives in Micmac. He lets his war party rest, and enjoy the peace.

Dec 16: A new trading post is set up in Roanoke.

1504-

The death of a hero: Huron, 1483-1504

Reactions so far? Would people like screenshots?

Well, the title is fairly self explanatoy. I saw the dreaded red outline in one of the provinces near Kebec. I think England has come to the lands of the Haudenosaunee. As for screenshot, how do i do it? would be perfectly willing to show one. Any suggestions on what to do next? I have 1% inflation already, and have a paltry 58d, from the original 1000 i had started out with.
Any ideas, suggestions, critiques are greatly appreciated. And, one more thing. Should the Iroquois have level one forts in any colonies they have(to mimic the difficulty that the Englsih, French, etc, had in fighting these Guerilla Wars? As it stands, the Iroquois cannot build anything except Warships(their Great Canoes) and infantry. No cavalry, no transports(ok, maybe that is because naval tech hasn't hit level 1 yet).

BTW, when i saved the game, somehow, i was leading vp with 131, with Spain 11 vp behind me. And this without any missions(there are only 2, anyways). Hmm...

Your discoveries and improved economic range and maybe the fights against the "local indians" have given you the most points.

Keep this going. I haven't seen an attempt yet at the Haudenosaunee. And as far as not being able to build certain things it is because you didn't change the tech tree from pagan to say something like Latin,or Orthodox. You are kinda screwed here.

yeah, but it wouldn't make much sense for the Haudenosaunee(i really should stick to calling them Iroquois, but it is an insult, supposedly to do so. Like calling an inuit an eskimo) to have Latin tech group. So far, I seem to be ok. And I am thinking, if i add level 1 forts to all of my colonies, then it makes it better. Of course, level 1 is the max allowed. And of course, not getting any conqs or explorers, well that kinda sucks. Also, i must admit, when i began, i thought, instead of making them pagan, make them reformed. Could you picture that? Simply for the 3 colonists they get/year, and the morale bonus kind of makes sense. Reformed Iroquois? That would be a larf.
Oh well, I think not being able to build anything unless i edit the game itself(eek, that would certainly ruin it. Besides, already done so much with set up i have now, not really worth it to change it) that makes for one helluva challenge.
I'll continue the AAR tomorrow, after work. Who knows, maybe i can finish it by end of the week(there is nothing going on, :D ) And who knows, maybe i will have a coastal power, with many many Great Canoes to sail the seas.

One thing? Am i correct in understanding Pagan does not allow for any building? Like upgrades, etc? If so, why is it possible to do so with China? Even Aztecs and Incas can upgrade, i think. Is it just Iroquois who cannot build up? huh

I think you take a screenshot by hitting F11. It happens very quickly, then you need to look in the Europa Universalis directory for the .BMP files that are created. I am not sure exactly which sub-directory they will be in, but it seems to me that they will be somewhere in the scenario or saved game directories. Hope I got all that right.

Aragel, if i conquer the world with the Iroquois, i would have to never play another game of EU again. Cause i would have just played the perfect game. Actually, all i want to do is not lose any of my core provinces, and possibly, get a CoT of my own, since now I am sending all trade to Venice. And my 6 merchants can't be sent anywhere because I don't know where Venice is. But thanks for the support

Forster, thanks. I feel like an idiot:D
i will attempt to post a screenshot.

PS Ok, i have a screenshot, but how do i post it? what do i use to do so? i see IMG but am really unsure what i need to do to show the lands of the Haudenosaunee.

Rise of the Haudenosaunee(continued)

Ok, I shall continue with the AAR. Just to recap, I have played about 12 years, have colonised up to Kebec, have no more conquistador, and the King just went mad...

1504-

Feb 12: Our war party in the Catskills are sent to Adirondack. They will clear out the province for a trader. As funds are quickly drying up, Bear Paw, our Chief, has decided to lay a network of traders around Haudenosaunee as these cost less than settlers. A war party will be sent to each province, clearing it out, and traders will be sent in
As such, a war party from Massachussetts is sent to Susquehana, to clear it out.

March 9: Our war party arrives in Adirondack, and is ambushed by hostile warriors. Although the first skirmish is won(March 24), the leader, White Bear, decides to attack again, hoping to catch these hostile warriors off guard

March 28: Adirondack is clear of any hostile natives. A trader is sent right away

April 15: Dances with Fish arrives in Susquehana, and is ambushed. He fights bravely, but suffers horrible losses[Killed:400, lost: 1200]
He retreats to Tuscarora. He will not forgive himself for this defeat, and prepares to counterattack

May 30: A trader sets up in Adirondack. Our trade network grows.
Our war party in Adirondack is sent to the lands of the Huron. The Confederacy waits patiently to send another trader.

June27-July 3: Fierce battle leaves Huron depleted of hostile warriors. A trader will be sent as soon as possible. Onward to Oshawa
It is decided to reinforce Dances with Fish war party. The call goes out for 1000 brave warriors to join him in Tuscarora

July 27-Aug 16: Oshawa proves to be more difficult to take. Retreat to Huron, and regroup

Sept 7: The 1000 warriors join Dances with Fish. They march towards Susquehana

Oct 1: Traders set up in Huron. Moving to Oshawa again, and the Confederacy hopes this time to eliminate any oppositon.

Oct 7: Revenge, sweet revenge. Susquehana can now take a trader without fear.Onward to Powhatan

Oct 19-Nov 2: Oshawa now knows the terrible price that comes with refusal to join the Confederacy. All warriors in the lands of the Oshawa are slaughtered. Niagra is next...

Nov 2-Nov 19: Powhatan is taken. Some remain, but no matter. The fools around the mighty Confederacy still refuse to see the light. They shall learn respect, or die at the hands of our Confederate warriors.

Dec 1: Another attack on the hostile natives of Pohatan. Traders report back that Huronie is under there control

Dec 3-7: These fools in Powhatan will not die. Another attack is made.

Dec 8-22: What do thes warrriors in Pohatan drink? They will not give in. A force is sent from Cheasapeake to take Powhatan once and for all
Dec 22: Into Niagra. No natives shall live beyond our borders. Thos who do not join immediately, die.

1505-

Jan 9-22: Several skirmishes in Powhatan. It is free, ready to be settled now. A return to Confederacy land. To Shenandoah.

Feb 20: Arrival in Shenandoah. Supplies shall be gathered, and then to the west.Traders sent to Susquehana

April 20: Disaster in Susquehana. Traders sent there do not report back. A head is sent to the Great House in Mohawk. It is one of the traders.

Aug 4: Trader sent to Powhatan. Perhaps later on, settlers can be sent.

Oct 4: Success in Powhatan. It is decided that funds shall be split equally between land improvements and treasury[50-50 split so i can build more colonies]

1506-

April 30: Much has been done to improve the treasury, and it is decided to send a colonist to Powhatan. Hopefully, they will succeed.

June 30: Over time, the small communtiy at Powhatan will grow to a fine city. The Confederacy decides this might be done again, perhaps in Susquehana

Sept 21: The call goes out for 3000 warriors to gather in Shenandoah. The "rebel" natives around the Western borders of the Confederacy lands will be destroyed.

Rise of the Haudenosaunee(continued)

1506-

Sept 23: Wonderful news. A new warrior, who had heard of our hero, Huron's exploits decides that he will explore the lands to the south, and to the west. The Confederacy annoints him "He who walks with Huron" (or Huron for short) and immediately calls every available army to come to Cheasapeake, where he patiently awiats them

1507-

March 6: What is this? A gift? To the Confederacy? To what does the Confederacy owe this?[got me a Gift to the State :D Whoo hoo, 400d to blow on colonies and troops]
19000 warriors have heeded the call, and join Huron in Cheasapeake. The Confederacy appreciates this, but asks for 7000 more to join [sent about 15k worth of troops from other armies to Cheasapeake, gonna move towards Aztecs]. When they are ready, they will march West, as far as they can. They have heard of a people far to the Southwest, a strange, exotic people. Huron is ordered to find them, to initiate contact, and perhaps trade.
With this influx of trade, colonists are sent to Powhatan and Oshawa, and a trader is sent to Susquehana.

May 6: Success in Susquehana, but faliure in Oshawa and Powhatan. The new warriors gather in Chesapeake. They will move to Santee, then westwards.

July 16: Our Diplomats have succeeded in their endeavours... Strange, there were no endeavours to undertake[got the extra diplomat thing i guess, but i already have the full 6 diplomats]
Huron slaughters all the natives in Santee. It is hoped he can remain long enough to allow a colony to be set up there

Sept 16: Success, and Huron moves on.

Nov 20: Carolina? What a lovely name. Huron slaughters the natives there. He will await one of our colonists

1508-

Jan 1: Colonists are off to Carolina, and Huron hopes they get there soon.

Mar 1: Success in Carolina. The Haudenosaunee Long hosues look strange, with all of that cotton around them. But still, an effective defence[will explain later, to allow some leveling of playing field]
Huron moves on, westwards.

June 10: Huron arrives in a place called Savannah. He decides to be lenient, and let the natives live. Many in the Grand War Party, as Huron has begun to call his war party, protest. But Huron will hear none of it. He moves West now.

Sept 24: A new province, Tallahassee. But Huron is met with stiff opposition, and is forced to retreat, back to Savannah. A colonist is sent to Savannah(Nov 3), in hopes of calming the natives living there.

1509-

Jan 3: Success in Savannah. It is decided to fortify Savannah, to act as the Western Reaches for the Confederacy. Huron is ordered to wait in Savannah until at least 300 settlers are there.

Jan 13: A settler head to Savannah

March 13: Success. Huron hopes the next settlers arrive soon. Word reaches the Confederacy that huron only has 16000 warriors, from the original 26000. This has to be righted. Calls go out throughout the Confederacy, and 10000 warriors are asked to gather in and around Cheasapeake and on May 28, the new warriors march for Savannah.

July 11: Settlers, more settlers, sent to Savannah. Huron, hearing this, ignores his orders to remain there, and marches back towards Tallahassee

On Aug 18, Huron engages 1500 hostile warriors with his party of 16775. He only hopes to beat back these fools. After a few moons of fighting, 1560 men lie dead. Sadness fills Huron, for the 60 men he lost were 60 to many. He moves West, yet again

Sept 7: Huron's impatience costs the settlers of Savannah dearly. The force sent to reinforce Huron in Savannah finds themselves fighting to save themselves. Huron is already moving, ignoring this. He is driven by something. It is not known what. This bothers the Confederacy

Oct 22: Cowards! They deserve the name , thos warriors in Gaspesie. 1732 men! Left, with no word to the leader.

Nov 10: Huron arrives in Mobile. The war party in Savannah, having killed the 1500 natives there, move to follow in Huron's footsteps.

Yup Xanadu, right on the nose. Talk about weird Venice is getting my trade, which is why i am making loads of tp. hopefully, one will jump up in my area, and if i am really lucky, i will get it to myself. If not, by 1550, if no change has happened(i do not have the chance to put merchants anywhere, i may have to make Venice CoT available(make it a known province, as it stands now, this is ridiculous))

And I have to think the game wants me to succeed. That conq in cheasapeake(ok, it wasnt an explorer, which would have been better, but i won't complain :D )

And, although this will probably ruin the AAR, after a colony hits 300+ inhabitants, i add a lvl 1 fort. I do this because of the idea that the villages of the Haudenosaunee were forts. They were designed as such as they knew that other Indians would kill them if they had the chance. Obviously, this alters the game, but without it, it detracts from the abilities of the Haudenosaunee. They are way too weak in terms of EU nations, which is a shame.

Well, i will continue shortly, but i'll take a break now, just to see what people think so far? I will be honest, I am hoping beyond hope i can get to Aztecs before the Spanish, or at least grab one of their gold provinces to offset my income.
And if anyone knows how to post a screenshot in a post, please, i would like to know

You'll have to talk to Gen Suvorov about posting screenshots. He has a server you can store them on. The mechanics of doing that are not clear to me, since I have never tried. You can find his site by checking some of the other aars, or pm him direct or even Warspite.

Sorry I can't help more this time.
