Yay im back (damn medieval war is so damn addicting)

Twas the year 1492 when I was sent down from heaven to stop the war in the year 2309 (Full nuclear war...boom). My mission was to take control of Russia and alter its history in anyway so communists never take power. I've been given 300 years to do so.

So I embarked on this...filthy, drunken, barren journey to save the world. I was lucky enough to land right on the footsteps of the Palace of Moscow and my presence startled all. I was immediatley given full power (so I held up a lighter and shot of a flare.....whatever works).

My best guess to make the Russians never want communists is to simply make the people happy. This shouldn't be too hard there stupid peasents what could they want. I made my way over to Tver to talk to some peasents in the village.

"Hello, Im your king now how could I make you happy?"
"Gi me Vodka"
"Ummm. Ok" (i give them some vodka)
"Gss me more VodKaaa"
"Dont you want anything else"
"Noooth...Vodka..Gives me VOdka"

Ok well these people arnt to hard to please. Just give them Vodka. I take a quick inventory of the situation. Its not bad solid army and decent tax income. Much of the world hates me though, Well except for Denmark who I make an alliance with as my first official act.

Well a little further in my first year in my first year I get some startling news from one of my few Diplomats. Apparently relations are really bad with Poland whose 3 times my size and has an army of horse's that arnt just used for polo. Task one take preventative action against this. I get a little help with Royal Marrage offers from Bohemia and Moldavia in June. In august I cement an alliance with Bohemia so I now can force the Poles to fight on 3 fronts if they choose to attack me. I have about 200 gold in my coffers and an army of 119000 men stationed between Moscow, Tver and Novgorod.

1493 I looked at the state of affairs in my country. The people are pretty happy with +2 stability. Im still pretty uneasy about the country's defence's but I really dont have much money to put into soilders (There cheap, but there are more important things). No the establishment of good relations throughout the world and improving my income would have to be the first step. Throughout the year I would take steps at both, Austia and Hungary would join my Anti-Polish alliance. Beneficial to both country's because the threat from Turkey could eliminate either of them, but combined with along with Bohemian suppport they could put up a fight.
Financially I would send 7 merchants to Novgorod over the course of the year. 4 established improving my income a bit.

1494 I feel pretty safe about the defense of my lands. I have weak techs which I will work on improving but I have high amounts of troops and a strong alliance against my biggest threat. Time to get those techs up and get myself some money (Vodka is expensive stuff). I put Taxcollectors in Moscow, Tver, Novgorod, Vologda, Vladimir. I kept up with my plans to improve foreign relations by entering a Royal Marrage with Hungary.
Keeping up with my trade improvements by sending 3 to Danzig which all would establish.

1495 Im up to about 60 D a year 11.7 a month. 9.3 from tax and less then 1 from trade and that simply wont due. 3 more merchants off to Andalusia, only 2 would survive to set-up-shop but that atleast would get me to 1 a month. Unfortunately my army took a major hit, loosing 40,000 plus to desertion in Novgorod (RE). They were heard to be yelling they want more Vodka as they ran for Ingermanland (what is wrong with these people). I did hit land tech 2 that same month (so what if all my opponents are about to hit 4). Austria and Hanseatic League refused to take our princess's ( They said they would consider it if we shaved them and gave them a tic tak).
All was not bad this month as far as rest-of-world relations go. Our borders were secured for atleast 4 years+ when P-L (Venice, Hanover, H-L, Portugal) DoW'd Turkey (Crimea). Good let those two giants pound away and leave me and my allies alone for my plans....

Give me some feedback please.

1496-1502 zzz

1496-1501 how can I put this: BORING. I didnt really do much the rest of the world had some solid activity but I wasn't involved in much.

1496-1498 I finished off putting Tax Collectors in place by placing my last one in Onega. I Married off princess's to France, Spain and Engalnd and brought Spain into the fold in the Great Alliance. (So they cant help me, I just didnt want anyone else to get them...like Sweeden or Poland). Of course the only reason I could get them was because France DoW'd England and they wouldn't honor. Turkey did its standard job of picking off Mameluks piece by piece. I kept up with my trade sending a few more to Holstein and I got Land Tech 3 so now I can build cannons. I sent a few more to Tago to get my feet in that growing CoT. The French/English war endered with basically people paying off each other and Milan getting annexed. I continued later in 1498 with marrying off my princess's giving them to Brandenburg andthe Hanse and towards the end of 1498 I got my first Naval Tech. I also began massing troops in Onega putting 0/1/3 there for now.

1499-1501
I hit trade level 2 and continued to mass troops. By March of 1501 I had 12/3/5 in Onega. 7/1/1 in Vologda. 15/6/0 in Novgorod and 30/25/0 in Moscow under Glinski. I had a very strong alliance in Spain, Denmark, Austria, Bohemia, Hungary. I had Royal Marriages with Bohemia, Moldavia, Denmark, Hungary, England, France,Spain, Brandenburg, Hanseatic League. I got Infrastructure 2 finally so I can build a brewery (make the people happy). Poland finally finished with the Turks after that long war and ended up with Bujak.

1500 I looked around my empire on horseback...6 provinces with 3 colonies. Not any solid resources in anyways and no way to get to the water. I called a meeting with the high nobility of the Russians and announced my plans for the next 10 years. 1) Get a port, we need an outlet to the water. 2) Improve the countries forts so every city has one and key cities have small forts. 3) Keep the Great Alliance in together. 4) Build a respectable navy so I can assist the Danes in the Baltic Sea. 5) Secure Moscow.

I then meet with my Military Advisors. Commander Glinski and Mastor Chief BoB (yes hes back)

"Bob, are our troops up for an attack"
"JellO is JiGGly"
"Pure genious, the troops are jumping at the chance to attack"
"Glinski, how soon can you invade"
"Wait till spring, give us time to finish off the siege"
"Glinski, were gonna keep you in Moscow as a last defense, BoB is more then capable of handeling this"
"GrEEN finger PAint"
"Are you saying we should were green cammo in the attack"
"MusSTarD"

With that, I waited till March 1st and sent the diplomat....

1502-1506 WAR

Now this AAR gets intresting. March 1st 1501 we sent our diplomat with one of the most important doctrines to date in the lands of Russia. We simply explained to our citizens that the Swedes have been stealing there Vodka and a port will allow us to ship in more.

I kept Glinski at home in Moscow with the bulk of my army thinking I could sweep in with my cannons and mid-size forces and take them out. My goals were Nyland mainly to give me a fort, Karlelia to connect the main land to it and as a bounus if things go well Finland to rub it in.

1501 was uneventful in the war.I moved the 15/0/6 from Novgorod to Karelia and my 12/3/5 from Onega to Nyland and the sieges were initiated in April. I put reinforcements from Vologda (7/2/0) to Onega to fill in for attrition. The rest of the year was uneventful really. The Danes took 2 key naval battles to stop relief efforts in Nyland but they lost Skane in November.

1502 started off awful for me and pretty much was awful. Attrition was killing my troops so I had to move the reserves into Karelia in January and in Febuary Far Karelia revolted and I had both my sieges broken (combo of attritoin and battle). In the spring I tried to launch a counter offensive in Karelia but was beaten back again. Things wern't looking good so I had to move Glinski in to create a large unit of 49,000 men with 0 cannons and won a quick battle in Karellia in November and took the province on my first assault.

1503 I did nothing but cover my loss of troops sending 10K infantry and 1K cavalry with 10 cannons into the lines again and moved them into Savolaka (sp?) to knock off a force there

1504 is when it escalated into full out war. January I sent the previous years forces to repel a new force in Karelia and formed 26,000 infantry to finish off the Swedes. It was an even match really untill April. The Swedes were able to keep the Danes at bay in the North and took Skane while I was making small advances into the Finland regions. In April though things turned the Great Alliances way as the battle of Karelia took place. The forces of '03 were forced to defend themselves in 4 consecutive battles over the course of 3 months and each time held there ground vs numerically superior Swedish forces. The cannons of the Russians owned the battles as the cannonades shatered the morale of hte sweedish army and my slight cavalry lead (250 to 30) gave me a shock bounus. The Russian forces took 15,000 Swedes while only losing 5,000. In the fall Master General BoB again showed his millitary genious with me in attendance in Nyland.

"BoB how much longer will the siege take"
"Turtle"
"What will turtles do?"
"BiRD"
"Im hungary, do you have any spagetti and spagetti sauce?"
"nO spaGeTTi SaUCe, ChARGe"

The third attempt took the fortress and we now had 3 stars. We sent a small cavalry force to occupy the unfortified province of Lappland and moved the rest of our forces onto Savolaka (sp?) to get the rest of the stars and end the war. We arrived in late November and routed a small Sweedish force despite loosing more men.

1505 A year of setback to our effots. We formed 14,000 more infantry to counter the hellish attrition rates of the Sweedish winter. We failed with 2 assaults in the Summer and Fall and again we were forced to reinforce with Infantry this time 6,000. We did have a little luck in the year though as we had a random even: Reformation of Navy (though we owned now port) and then hit Naval Tech 2 in December. Poland again Declared War this time Courland, this would buy us more time and keep us more secure.

1506 Time to finish this thing, 16,000 Infantry with our tax money (70 some odd gold) and we finally take savoloka on our third assault in March. May ended this war and we came out with Nyland and Karelia. We finished up with 5 stars but it was a very costly war. I started my Navy by building our first galley in July and the rest of the year ended up with Courland being annexed and our Spanish allies DoW'ng some heathen country called the Aztecs. I moved some troops to Moscow (14K infantry).

The end of the war my Army looked like this
5/0/3 under Glinski in Nyland
13/0/0 in Moscow
and I have a 1 galley navy.

The war was barley worth it. I lost 90% of my army and set myself back in my long term goals of improving fortifications and securing Moscow. I need to fix up my Army and guard myself better against a Polish invasion.

I did very badly in this war. I won because I had the time to wait till Sweedish money was gone and they couldnt mass the troops. Im no longer going to fill my Army with infantry they cant fight and lost to inferior forces. I should have mobilized Glinski at the start then I coulda just swept through all the Southern Sweedish provinces and simply dominated. Notes for the future I guess.

All adivce and feedback in appreciated.

Have you ever tried assulting a fortress, but pulling back before anything (morale or troops) wane. Repeat this till the castle falls. I can usually get a province a month per army by doing it this way.;)

1507-1510--Rebuilding

The war with Sweeden crushed are armed forces and ruined us financially and it is going to take quite a bit of time to rebuild this.

1507 Pretty boring year. Built up the armed forces a little issuing 7/0/0 into the Moscow unit and 2/1/0 in my Swedish unit. In April I built another galley and Oman DoW'd Aden. Pskov didn't want to join my alliance this year but in 1508 they would.

I got a setback in my trade in Feb 1508 when Prussia knocked me completely out of Danzig but I constructed 2 more galleys this year and my first warship in 1509 to bring my navy to a whooping 5 :) . I started my fortification effort by ugrading Moscow to Small and put constructed a fort in Onega in 1510. The middle east exploded when ther Persian allied forces of the Mameluks and Georgia invaded Iraq who is backed by Algiers then the Turish force of Crimea (DoWer) and England? attacked Georgia who was only backed by Persia. I had RE unhappiness among the peasents so I got a plus 5 revolt risk, which came to action in September when the Garrison in Nyland (1510) revolted and I had to siege that.

In 1510 the world stands like this:
Top 5 powers
1 Spain
2 Poland
3 Turkey
4 France
5 England

Top 5 alliances
1 Russia (Austria, Denmark, Hungary, Pskov, Spain, Bohemia)
1 Poland (H-L, TO, Portugal, Venice, Hanover)
1 Turkey (England, Crimea)
4 France (Helevetia, Pope, Savoy some little country)
5 Persia (mameluks, georgia)

Big 3 way tie for 1st, hard to tell who would come out if we all went to war...maybe we'll find out :)

Goals for those 10 years
Get port check
Build decent navy check
Keep alliance together check
Improve forts half check (got some..not enough)
Secure moscow nope

Goals for next 10 years
1 Improve all my colonies...atleast 1 city (maybe 2)
2 Keep alliance together
3 Continue to get navy (1 solid fleet)
4 Get army into a solid force
5 Become a top 5 country in terms of trade income.

modest goals but expensive ones.
