How Huey P. Long became president of the USA
Huey Long was the Governor of Louisiana 1928-1932 and a Louisiana's senator 1932-1944. He was born in 1893 and spent his early life doing odd jobs, like auctioneering and traveling around selling things. He started his political career in 1922, at this time he was a member of the railroad commission of Louisiana, when he announced that he would run for Governor of Louisiana in 1924. As the Republicans had practically no support at all in Louisiana, he joined the Democrats.
Long lost the -24 election, though, and spent the next few years building up his reputation for the -28 elections. He seemed to have radical populist opinions, which made him very popular. For example, he intended to remove the poll tax, which kept poor people from voting.
In 1928 Huey Long became the Governor of Louisiana. His attempts to fulfill his promises led to him almost being impeached on almost every thinkable charge. Long, however, was good at the art of forming secret alliances, and had soon convinced almost everybody that corporate interests and conservatives were trying to stop him from developing Louisiana.
Long was determined to stay in power, and frequently used bribes, made promises and extorted to make sure he got what he wanted. In 1930 he founded his own newspaper in Louisiana, so that he could spread the word of his achievements and drag his enemies' names through the mud.
In 1930 Long ran for senator, and won. He didn't leave his Governor duties, though, until he talked one of his old friends into running for Governor. With Long's support, his old friend won a landslide victory. During the following years, Long would control Louisiana through his old friend.
In 1932, when Long started his career as a senator, the world was going through one of the worst phases of the Great Depression. Long still went with his old radical populist arguments, for example he spoke of a drastic redistribution of wealth so that every American can lead a comfortable life. This very argument was what made him support Roosevelt in the presidential election of -32.
However, Long was disappointed with Roosevelt's way of handling the recession and ran for president in 1936. Although Long was defeated by Roosevelt in the Democratic nomination, Long refused to give up and formed a third party, taking many Democratic votes with him. This was what allowed Landon to win the presidential elections of -36.
Long became more and more popular during the following years, as his actions had given him enormous publicity. His stance on war was that "war is something that this nation goes to when Wall St. demands it." He accused something he called "the military-industrial complex" of "being the cause of every conflict in the world."
In the 1940 elections, Long won the Democratic nomination, but lost against Landon in the presidential election. The reason Long lost, was that Landon's supporters fiercely accused Long of being a communist because of his various populist ideas.
In 1942, Long accused Landon's government of "entering the war on the request of Wall St." and predicted that "the war won't end until we're all out of men." Long looked at the war and criticized it daily. His accusations ranged from incompetence to imperialism. He blamed Landon for the defeats at Wake Island, Samoa and Hawaii, and in 1944, for the Japanese invasion of California.
In the presidential campaign of 1944, Long entered determined to become president one way or another. He was an instant favourite because he promised to end the war. At this time the USA was split into two groups. Those who favoured the war (mostly Republicans) and those who opposed it (mostly Democrats).
However, on the 20th of June, 1944, he was contacted by a mysterious anonymous person. The person claimed to be "one of his supporters" and refused to tell his name. However, the person claimed to have a way of giving Long the presidency without winning any election.
Long decided to meet the "supporter" and wasn't very surprised at all when he found the "supporter" to be a Japanese spy. The spy told him to be ready to take office "in a month or two."
A few days after their meeting, news started coming in about Japanese forces capturing the Panama Channel.
It was a huge Japanese fleet, cutting through allied fleets like a hot knife through butter, making its way northwards. People feared the worst.
On the 21st of July, Japanese SNLF divisions took control of Washington, with all of its important government officials, including the president, still there. Admiral Yamamoto personally joined the SNLF as they arrested Landon under the charges of "imperialism, war-mongering and breaking international law," of course there was no trial. Landon was simply declared "removed from office" and imprisoned. At the same time, Japanese forces forced the senate to declare a cease fire.
On the 8th of August, Admiral Yamamoto declared that the USA had a new president, Huey Long. Long had been taken to a safe house by the spy several hours before the attack on Washington even began, and so had been safe and sound in the white house for several days.
Peace talks began with Huey Long the same day and according to Yamamoto "Long was very cooperative." Yamamoto even praised the spy who "found this guy," and demanded to know his name. Unfortunately not even Long knew the name of the spy.
