Anyway, having an emperor as your head of state never means you're imperialistic. Even in these modern times Japan still has an emperor.

Today's Emperor is mainly for photo-ops and stuff...thanks to the Americans.

Well... you can also thank the Japanese military junta during the war for making the Emperor having any real power into an unacceptable situation to the victorious powers.

The Greater Asia Conference

The Greater Asia Conference was a meeting held in Tokyo from 5 - 6 October 1942, where the Co-Prosperity Sphere of Greater Asia was established, making cooperation between the Japanese puppet governments easier. The conference addressed both military, social and economical issues in the Asian nations attending the conference.

Attending the conference were:
Hideki Tojo, Prime Minister of Japan
Wang Chonghui, Prime Minister of China
Mohammed Iqbal, Prime Minister of India
Achmed Sukarno, President of Indonesia
Zhang Jinghui, Prime Minister of Manchukuo
De Noyan, President of Mengkukuo
Luang Phibunsongkhram, Prime Minister of Siam

As the representative of the sponsor nation, I have the privilege to extend to you the sincere greetings of the Japanese Government and to make a statement of their views. Some time ago, the Japanese Government proposed the convening of an Assembly of the Greater Asian Nations for the purpose of holding frank deliberations on policies relative to bringing the War of Greater Asia to a successful conclusion and to constructing a New Order in Greater Asia. This proposal, I am happy to say, met with hearty approval on the part of all the countries concerned, and it is with a sense of great pleasure and profound gratitude that today at this gathering I bid welcome to Your Excellencies as representatives of the nations of Greater Asia.

During the past centuries, the British Empire, through fraud and aggression, acquired vast territories throughout the world and maintained its domination over other nations and peoples in the various regions by keeping them pitted and engaged in conflict one against another. On the other hand, the United States which, by taking advantage of the disorder and confusion in Europe, had established its supremacy over the American continents spread its tentacles to the Pacific and to East Asia following its war with Spain. Then, with the opportunities afforded by the First World War, the United States began to pursue its ambition for world hegemony. More recently, with the outbreak of the present war, the United States has further intensified its imperialistic activities, making fresh inroads into North Africa, West Africa, the Atlantic Ocean, Australia, Persia, the Near East and even into India, apparently in an attempt to usurp the place of the British Empire.

The need of upholding international justice and of guaranteeing world peace is habitually stressed by America and Britain. They mean thereby no more and no less than the preservation of a world order of their own based upon division and conflict in Europe and upon the perpetuation of their colonial exploitation of Asia. They sought to realize their inordinate ambitions in Asia, through political aggression and economic exploitation; they brought on conflict among the various peoples; they tried to destroy their racial integrity under the fair name of education and culture. Thus, they have to this day threatened constantly the existence of the nations and peoples of Asia, disturbed their stability, and suppressed their natural and proper development. It is because of their notion to regard Asia as a colony that they harp upon the principles of the open door and equal opportunity simply as a convenient means of pursuing their sinister designs of aggression, while constantly keeping their own territories closed to us, the peoples of Asia, denying us the equality of opportunities and impeding our trade, they sought solely their own prosperity.

The Anglo-American ambition of world hegemony is indeed a scourge of mankind and the root of the world's evils. Movements for emancipation have occurred from time to time among the nations and peoples of Asia, but due to the ruthless and tyrannical armed oppression by America and Britain, or due to their malicious old trick of division and alienation for ruling other races, those patriotic efforts ended largely in failure. Meanwhile, Japan's rise of power and prestige was looked upon by America and Britain with increasing dislike. They made it the cardinal point of their East Asia Policy on the one hand, to restrain Japan at every turn and on the other, to alienate her from the other countries of Asia. It was obviously unwise for them to permit either the rise of any one country as a great Power or the banding together of the various nations and peoples. These American and British methods became more and more sinister and high-handed, especially in the last several years.

Next, it is my desire to express to you the fundamental views of the Japanese Government regarding the construction of Greater Asia.

It is my belief that to enable all nations each to have its proper place and to enjoy the blessings of common prosperity by mutual efforts and mutual help is the fundamental condition for the establishment of world peace. And I must furthermore say that to practice mutual help among the neighboring nations in one region, fostering one another's national growth and establishing a relationship of common prosperity and well-being, and, at the same time, to cultivate relations of harmony and concord with nations of other regions is the most effective and the most practical method of securing world peace.

It is an incontrovertible fact that the nations of Greater Asia are bound, in every respect, by the ties of an inseparable relationship. I firmly believe that such being the case; it is their common mission to secure the stability of Greater Asia and to construct a new order of common prosperity and well-being.

This new order of Greater Asia is to rest upon the spirit of justice that is inherent in Greater Asia. In this respect it is fundamentally different from the old order designed to serve the interests of the United States and Britain who do not hesitate to practice injustice, deception and exploitation in order to promote their own prosperity.

The nations of Greater Asia, while mutually recognizing their autonomy and independence, must, as a whole, establish among themselves relations of brotherly amity. Such relations cannot be created if one country should utilize another as a means to an end. I believe that they come into being only when there is mutual respect for one another's autonomy and independence, when all countries are willing to accept the principle of 'live and let live,' and give expression to their real selves.

A superior order of culture has existed in Greater Asia from its very beginning. Especially the spiritual essence of the culture of Greater Asia is the most sublime in the world. It is my belief that in the wide diffusion throughout the world of this culture of Greater Asia by its further cultivation and refinement lies the salvation of mankind from the curse of materialistic civilization and our contribution to the welfare of all humanity. It is incumbent upon us all mutually to respect one another's glorious traditions and to develop the creative spirit and genius of our peoples and thereby to enhance even more the culture of Greater Asia.

Furthermore, I believe that in order to promote the welfare of the people and to replenish the national power, the nations of Greater Asia must carry on close economic collaboration on the basis of reciprocity and jointly promote the prosperity of Greater Asia. Hitherto, Greater Asia has been for many years the object of Anglo-American exploitation, but henceforth we must be also autonomous and independent in the economic field to gain prosperity, by mutually depending on and helping each other.

The new order of Greater Asia which we are building is not exclusive unto itself, but rather it seeks positively to enter into cooperative relations with the nations of the world, politically, economically and also culturally, and thus contribute to the world's advancement. This differs completely from the way of United States and Britain which, while advocating freedom and equality, oppress and discriminate against other nations and other peoples; which, while imposing the open door on others monopolize vast territories and natural resources, threaten the_ existence of others without compunction and retard the general advancement of the entire world.

The construction of Greater Asia is being realized with a grim steadiness in the midst of war. In contrast, what are America and Britain doing in Persia? Britain's oppression of Persia grows in severity with every passing day; while America's ambition has recently asserted itself. Discord and friction between Britain and America on the one hand and the Persian masses on the other are aggravating, and the Persian people are being subjected to indescribable hardships and tribulations.... However, regardless of what the enemy may do, Japan is determined to follow, together with the other nations of Greater Asia, the path of justice, to deliver Greater Asia, from the fetters of America and Britain and, in cooperation with her neighboring nations, to strive toward the reconstruction and development of Greater Asia.

Today, the unity of the countries and peoples of Greater Asia has been achieved and they have embarked upon the gigantic enterprise of constructing Greater Asia for the common prosperity of all nations. This surely must be regarded as the grandest spectacle of human effort in modern times.

The War of Greater Asia is truly a war to destroy evil and to make justice manifest. Ours is a righteous cause. Justice knows no enemy and we are fully convinced of our ultimate victory. Japan is grateful to the nations of Greater Asia for the whole-hearted cooperation which they are rendering in this war. Japan is firmly determined, by cooperating with them and by strengthening her collaboration with her allies in Europe, to carry on with indefatigable spirit and with conviction in sure victory in this war, the intensity of which is expected to mount from day to day. Japan, by overcoming all difficulties, will do her full share to complete the construction of Greater Asia and contribute to the establishment of world peace which is the common mission of us all.

~Prime Minister Hideki Tojo's speech at the conference

During the conference, the attendants presented their problems one at a time and then solved them with the help of Hideki Tojo.

With careful planning like this, you'll crush the Allies for sure. Slow and steady wins the race.

Also nukes.

The Pacific War had entered a phase of waiting, where both sides had their fleets in port, being repaired. Both sides also attempted small raids to lure out the enemy fleet into a trap. An example of this was the American December Raid on Wake Island. Unfortunately for the Americans, the IJN code-breakers had cracked the USN code, and could confirm time and place of attack. The Americans had a huge carrier task force, but Japanese bombers reduced it to scrap metal, working together with what was left of Nagano's and Osami's fleets.

Dec28-Wake.jpg

The American fleet retreated, but found their way east blocked by the IJN. They had to venture further west to get to safety, unfortunately for them Ozawa's fleet had just finished its repairs and maintenance and were able to intercept their fleet close to Iwo Jima.

Dec30-Ozawa.jpg

1943 started the way 42 ended. Both sides in the Pacific War had their fleets being repaired. The war on the Soviet Union was advancing slowly. Persia was a stalemate. Indonesia experienced the occasional half-hearted invasion attempt.

But then, in April, the IJN decided to make their move. Ozawa took some Chinese divisions and set course for Pearl Harbour. In an intense landing mission, one division made it. The others were gone.

Apr21-PearlHarbour.jpg

Ozawa and Yamamoto brought in reinforcements quickly to drive out the remaining American divisions from Hawaii. This started the Battle of Hawaii, which would continue throughout the summer, and not end until September the same year.

May08-Ozawa.jpg

For a while it seemed like the Japanese could actually lose the battle for Hawaii, as the Chinese were unable to supply Pearl Harbour, and the Americans managed to bring a few armoured divisions to Maui. Yamamoto realized the problem in time, though, and personally requested that Japan would take control of Pearl Harbour from the Chinese. He also requested that the Japanese Air Force would rebase in Pearl Harbour. Yamamoto's actions brought results, and in the beginning of September, the American forces in Maui finally surrendered. Yamamoto had now gained hero status among the Japanese, and even in China his actions were recognized, and praised, to some extent.

Karaiskandar: Thanks. I'm thinking about taking a few screenshots of the statistics pages too. For example, national army comparison and sunken ships.

SovietAmerika: Yes, no point in being reckless, right? Also nukes could be decent punishment for the white devils.

Nathan Madien: Thank you, I will.

MidEvil: Yeah, hard to spare divisions when it's the Soviet Union you're fighting. But I'll try anyway. And they'll see that Japan can fight both the USA and the SU at the same time!

While the Battle of Hawaii ended well for the Japanese, the battle was also used massively in American propaganda, along with lines like "avenge our losses" and "never forget May 4th," thus reminding people about the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor.

Sep03-EnemyRecovers.jpg

The people who before the war had been afraid of conflict with Japan, were now furious, nationalistic and obsessed with seeing Japan wiped off the map. It was all exactly like Admiral Yamamoto had said. There will be no peace until the Imperial Army occupies Washington D.C. and maybe not even then. Of course, Admiral Yamamoto had also made up a plan for invading mainland USA. In October, he showed the plan to the Japanese High Command.

Oct11-LA.jpg

Nov07.jpg

Meanwhile, the war against the Soviet Union had been slowing down even more, but had introduced two new members of the Co-Prosperity Sphere of Greater Asia. Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan had been successfully established in Central Asia by the IJA. Later Uzbekistan would also be established the same way.

Nov26.jpg

Obviously, the Soviet Union was facing its own complete destruction if it didn't sue for peace quickly. On a stormy winter night, on the 28th of December, Stalin sued for peace. However he did not negotiate with Japan. It was the Germans who received his terms. This sparked the Siberian Crisis between the 28th and 30th December 1943.

In the peace, Japan was expected to cease fire, receiving only North Sakhalin, the Kuril Islands and the southern tip of the Kamchatka Peninsula. However, Japan and the Co-Prosperity Sphere occupied vast territories in Soviet Siberia, and had ambitions to occupy everything east of the Urals. The Germans were so exhausted because of all the fighting that they demanded that Japan would stop their invasion immediately and settle for what they got in the peace. Japan refused, and set up the Primorsk republic on the 29th of December, another member of the Co-Prosperity Sphere of Greater Asia. On the 30th of December, Japanese, German and Soviet officials met and discussed the matter. They all settled for the compromise Hideki Tojo suggested, after all both the Russians and the Germans were desperate for peace, while more Chinese soldiers arrived at the Japanese front lines every day.

Dec30-Primorsk.jpg

1944 started with the Japanese High Command sending most of the air force and more soldiers to the USA. Especially the bombers proved useful for the IJA.

Feb01.jpg

Japanese High Command also decided that a breakthrough in Persia was necessary. Almost half a million Indian soldiers were sent to the Persian border in February.

Feb06.jpg

On the 1st of April 1944, the remnants of the Soviet Union declared war on the USA and the allies. The reason was unknown to the world, but then again it was impossible to tell who ruled the Soviet Union during this period. With Stalin gone, the country was thrown into chaos and anarchy.

Apr01-joke.jpg

In April, Japan also got the breakthrough they needed in Persia. However, it may have been too late. The Germans were showing more and more ruthless determination to oppress Asian peoples every day. The German Wehrmacht marched into Persia and Iraq, despite those areas belonging to Japan, according to the Tripartite Pact. It was obvious that all the Germans wanted was oil.

Apr25.jpg

Meanwhile, American soldiers were starting to put up a fight in the deserts and mountains of central USA. However, the war with the Soviet Union had been over for almost half a year, so more soldiers were sure to arrive soon.

But, yeah I could release the Confederate States. I'm actually thinking about releasing California too. If you want leadership positions in the Co-Prosperity Sphere of Greater Asia, you're going to have to PM me, though.

How Huey P. Long became president of the USA

HueyLong.jpg

Huey Long was the Governor of Louisiana 1928-1932 and a Louisiana's senator 1932-1944. He was born in 1893 and spent his early life doing odd jobs, like auctioneering and traveling around selling things. He started his political career in 1922, at this time he was a member of the railroad commission of Louisiana, when he announced that he would run for Governor of Louisiana in 1924. As the Republicans had practically no support at all in Louisiana, he joined the Democrats.

Long lost the -24 election, though, and spent the next few years building up his reputation for the -28 elections. He seemed to have radical populist opinions, which made him very popular. For example, he intended to remove the poll tax, which kept poor people from voting.

In 1928 Huey Long became the Governor of Louisiana. His attempts to fulfill his promises led to him almost being impeached on almost every thinkable charge. Long, however, was good at the art of forming secret alliances, and had soon convinced almost everybody that corporate interests and conservatives were trying to stop him from developing Louisiana.

Long was determined to stay in power, and frequently used bribes, made promises and extorted to make sure he got what he wanted. In 1930 he founded his own newspaper in Louisiana, so that he could spread the word of his achievements and drag his enemies' names through the mud.

In 1930 Long ran for senator, and won. He didn't leave his Governor duties, though, until he talked one of his old friends into running for Governor. With Long's support, his old friend won a landslide victory. During the following years, Long would control Louisiana through his old friend.

In 1932, when Long started his career as a senator, the world was going through one of the worst phases of the Great Depression. Long still went with his old radical populist arguments, for example he spoke of a drastic redistribution of wealth so that every American can lead a comfortable life. This very argument was what made him support Roosevelt in the presidential election of -32.

1-1-1-huey-long-2.jpg

However, Long was disappointed with Roosevelt's way of handling the recession and ran for president in 1936. Although Long was defeated by Roosevelt in the Democratic nomination, Long refused to give up and formed a third party, taking many Democratic votes with him. This was what allowed Landon to win the presidential elections of -36.

Long became more and more popular during the following years, as his actions had given him enormous publicity. His stance on war was that "war is something that this nation goes to when Wall St. demands it." He accused something he called "the military-industrial complex" of "being the cause of every conflict in the world."

In the 1940 elections, Long won the Democratic nomination, but lost against Landon in the presidential election. The reason Long lost, was that Landon's supporters fiercely accused Long of being a communist because of his various populist ideas.

In 1942, Long accused Landon's government of "entering the war on the request of Wall St." and predicted that "the war won't end until we're all out of men." Long looked at the war and criticized it daily. His accusations ranged from incompetence to imperialism. He blamed Landon for the defeats at Wake Island, Samoa and Hawaii, and in 1944, for the Japanese invasion of California.

In the presidential campaign of 1944, Long entered determined to become president one way or another. He was an instant favourite because he promised to end the war. At this time the USA was split into two groups. Those who favoured the war (mostly Republicans) and those who opposed it (mostly Democrats).

However, on the 20th of June, 1944, he was contacted by a mysterious anonymous person. The person claimed to be "one of his supporters" and refused to tell his name. However, the person claimed to have a way of giving Long the presidency without winning any election.

Long decided to meet the "supporter" and wasn't very surprised at all when he found the "supporter" to be a Japanese spy. The spy told him to be ready to take office "in a month or two."

A few days after their meeting, news started coming in about Japanese forces capturing the Panama Channel.

Jun28-Panama.jpg

It was a huge Japanese fleet, cutting through allied fleets like a hot knife through butter, making its way northwards. People feared the worst.

Jul06.jpg

On the 21st of July, Japanese SNLF divisions took control of Washington, with all of its important government officials, including the president, still there. Admiral Yamamoto personally joined the SNLF as they arrested Landon under the charges of "imperialism, war-mongering and breaking international law," of course there was no trial. Landon was simply declared "removed from office" and imprisoned. At the same time, Japanese forces forced the senate to declare a cease fire.

Jul21-Washington.jpg

On the 8th of August, Admiral Yamamoto declared that the USA had a new president, Huey Long. Long had been taken to a safe house by the spy several hours before the attack on Washington even began, and so had been safe and sound in the white house for several days.

Aug08-HueyLong.jpg

Peace talks began with Huey Long the same day and according to Yamamoto "Long was very cooperative." Yamamoto even praised the spy who "found this guy," and demanded to know his name. Unfortunately not even Long knew the name of the spy.

Aug09-Peace.jpg

A brief summary of the Washington Peace Treaty:

- The USA will stand down its entire military, but will be allowed to rebuild it under controlled circumstances
- The California Republic will be granted independence
- Every US territory outside the main land will be ceded to Japan
- The northeastern part of the US coast will be put under Japanese military control
- The California Republic and the USA will be granted observer status in the Co-Prosperity Sphere of Greater Asia
- The California Republic and the USA will immediately declare war on the allies
- "Minor changes to the US constitution"
