While the Germans distracted the Russians in Europe, we decided to take the opportunity and launch an invasion of the Asian part of the USSR.
The front line of this war was the widest ever.
Meanwhile, Admiral Ozawa had been given the task to execute an invasion of the Philippines. He was viewed as the most competent candidate for the mission, and he was given 11 Siamese divisions to perform this invasion with.
The USN responded after a month, but by then the invasion was almost over already. The USN lost many fine ships because they rushed the intervention plan.
As if it wasn't bad enough already, the USN kept pouring ships towards Ozawa's fleet, losing badly over and over again.
While Ozawa's fleet kept sinking enemy ships, the Americans attempted a huge invasion of Wake Island, involving tanks, artillery and motorized divisions. However the invasion failed, largely because the Japanese soldiers guarding the island had fortified it with all kinds of cannons, mines and traps.
On the 30th of June, Ozawa declared victory in the Philippines. The Americans had failed, and lost many fine ships in the process.
In July, Nagano was asked to arrange an invasion of Pearl Harbor, and to drive the Americans out of the Hawaii islands. He approached the islands unopposed at first, but an intelligence report revealed to him that Pearl Harbor was too heavily garrisoned for his forces to be able to land there. Instead he turned his attention towards The Big Island. This was when the Americans noticed him. Nagano managed to get 4 divisions to Hawaii, but only because his cruiser fleet stalled the USN for several days. Japanese high command thought Pearl Harbor would be an easy invasion like the Philippines, and in the aftermath regretted that they had sent Nagano there. Nagano's fleet was usually viewed as the weakest in the IJN, and he was only given 6 divisions to invade Pearl Harbor with. Japanese high command realized that this had been a mistake.
The next month another disaster occurred. Admiral Osami, determined to avenge Nagano's loss in Hawaii, lost all of his CVs to protect Wake Island. An invasion of Pearl Harbor seemed even more unlikely now.
The USA finally decided to drag Vichy France into the war, by attempting an invasion of Morocco. Now, of the European countries, only Ireland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and Schweiz remain at peace.
Another event, that occurred in August, was the American attempted invasion of Indonesia. Japan offered to send assistance to Indonesia, but they refused and took care of the invasion themselves.
In the beginning of October, 2 large IJN fleets had lost their fighting power, while the other two were stuck on repairs and maintenance. The overall situation for the IJN didn't look very bright, and before the war Yamamoto himself said: "It would not be enough that we take Guam and the Philippines, nor even Hawaii and San Francisco. To make victory certain, we would have to march into Washington and dictate the terms of peace in the White House. I wonder if our politicians (who speak so lightly of a Japanese-American war) have confidence as to the final outcome and are prepared to make the necessary sacrifices." Japanese high command hadn't realized that he was right until now, and braced themselves for a long war.
Meanwhile, the war against the Soviet Union had been going very well. Japanese, Chinese and Manchu divisions marched north almost unopposed.
