St.Ilya the Thunderer is defending his own. Thats is definitely how they will take it down in the chronicles.

There's also going to be a St.Ilya church nearby, I'd wager you that.

@ Enewald: The Livonians had 3200 men, Vsevolod had 1200. The pagans sometimes have very large armies. Lithuania gives me some serious problems soon and the Cumans managed to get 60,000 later on. I haven't made it to mongols yet.
@ RGB: St Ilya maybe, St Vsevolod is more likely. And yes my Vsevolod does kick ass.
@demokratickid: I'm not sure what you're talking about, care to enlighten me.

Updates should be more regular now that I have a laptop. I have one almost ready to go and the next is taking shape but needs a lot of work.

The End of the Livonian War

Title.jpg

When the Kiev regiment finally arrived at Novgorod it bought some sad news. The long suffering Marshal Gleb had died while on the march. Now the regiment was led by a minor noble by the name Simeon Nikitich. He was barely competent so Vsevolod quickly took over the regiment.

SimeonNikitich.jpg

There was also good news as Elena was once again expecting.

The Kiev regiment had arrived just in time as the Livonians had regrouped and were advancing once again. With his army boosted by the new arrivals, Vsevolod was able to defeat the Livonians easily. He then pursued them to Pskov and once agan attempted to siege the city.

The Livonians put up little resistance and Pskov was retaken within two weeks. Vsevolod continued to pursue the Livonians, this time into their own territory. Terrified of Vsveolod's wrath being unleashed against them the Livonians soon came begging for peace. Recognizing Vsevolod as rightful ruler of Novgorod and Pskov and offering a large sum of gold.

Vsevolod was pleased by the offer and eagerly accepted. He could easily have crushed the enemy but was far more interested in matters closer to home. Of particular concern was the state of Pskov. While Novgorod had been occupied for only a few days, Pskov had been occupied for over a year.

During this time the Livonians had taken everything of value and enslaved much of the population. More so, when Vsevolod had finally managed to capture the city, the fleeing Livonians had tried to burn what was left. Many buildings were badly damaged or destroyed and the short summer was almost over. Those that returned to Pskov were in for a hard winter.

Vsevolod attempted to restore order to the city but the citizens resisted the new rule. They formed a militia and attempted to kick Vsevolod and his men out. Seeing that there was little he could do for now he decided to return to Kiev. Eventually they would come to their senses and accept his rule.

In the south things had continued smoothly in the two years he had been occupied and Vsevolod was soon reunited with his family. What Vsevolod didn't expect was to find that Bagrat, King of Georgia had also come to Kiev.

Bagrat was interested in forming an alliance between the two Orthodox states against the muslim and pagan powers that dominated the region. Vsevolod was still bound by his alliance with Germany but promised that he would not neglect Georgia if it came under attack.

Bagrat had also bought Vakhtang to visit his family. Vsevolod was very pleased with his progress. In particularly he was excelling in the art of accounting, much like his father. Soon the visitors had to return to Georgia but Vsevolod had definitely gained a new friend.

Ah, the Georgians.

Let's see if they get into suicidal wars against all of the caucasus as they usually do.

Georgia has some fun times ahead for sure.
Suicidal wars are the Georgians national passtime and with Vakhtang looking more and more dangerous to Vladimir's dreams of becoming Czar you can be sure spies and assasins are lurking behind every corner.

I've managed to play ahead until the mongols arrive, assembled my massive army to crush them into oblivion and then got a fatal error

The Northern Campaign part 1

Title.jpg

The next two years passed without major incident. Pskov had returned to order and was slowly recovering, Vladimir and Elena had a daughter who they named Dobronega, and Pope Alexander II had passed away so Bogumil, Archbishop of Poland had been elected as his replacement.

In May 1082 Vsevolod was surprised by the ruturn of his nephew Davyd Igorevich. The young noble had spent the last several years as the leader of a mercenary band fighting in the German Civil war. Having made a small fortune he had returned to Kiev seeking to lay claim to Smolensk.

Vsevolod had already installed Mariam in Smolensk so Vsevolod decided to make Davyd his Marshal instead. This freed Simeon to take over as steward, having had Feodosia retire earlier. Vsevolod also found a prestigious wife for his new Marshal. Soon Davyd was married to Eirene Dukas who was the sister of the Prince of Turnovo. Unfortunately she became rather fanatical about religion and spends much of her time cloistered in her room.

Shortly after things took a dramatic turn. On July 11th the ageing Vsevolod began to feel increasingly ill. Feeling that he was living on borrowed time, especially after his miraculous escape from death at Novgorod, he set out to finish what he had started. Although Novgorod had not yet fully recovered from the war, Vsevolod managed to raise nearly 2000 infantry and several hundred cavalry for his campaign.

After his defeat at the hand of the Livonians and subsequent humiliation by Vsevolod, Mstislav had attemted to regain some of his prestige by waging war against the Tribe of Karelia. Instead of an easy victory as he had hoped, Mstislav was soundly defeated. Stripped of his lands he fled to Velikiye Luki which he had given to his inbred son Rostislav.

Vsevolod's army was easily sufficient to overwhelm the small settlement and capture the failed Prince and his son. Mstislav was forced to surrendur his title as Prince of Beloozero. Radoslav was allowed to remain as lord of Velikiye Luki as long as he submitted to Vsevolod.

Vsevolod planned to make his friend Domazhir of Beloozero a Prince but first he needed to capture Vologda. Unfortunately the bishop of Vologda was vassal to Viacheslav, Vsevolod's son-in-law. Reluctantly Vsevolod declared war as did Viacheslav. Vologda was no better defended than Velikiye Luki and as winter closed in Vsevolod captured the settlement. He made his way back to Beloozero and crowned Domazhir Prince of Beloozero. He and the army remained there until spring returned before setting out for Hlynov.

Viacheslav was no more willing to do battle than Vsevolod. On July 4th, 1083 the two met to negotiate a treaty. Vsevolod desired for Viachelslav to join with him in uniting the people of Rus under his banner. Viacheslav wanted to retain his independence. After much negotiation, and some prodding from the army at Vsevolods back, they managed to negotiate a reasonable compromise. Vsevolod gifted Viacheslav with lands and titles. In exchange Viacheslav swore his loyalty to the Grand Prince.

While Vsevolod had been making war in the north things had not been idle in the south. On March 3rd Vladimir and Elena had a second son who them named Volodar. Davyd had also been busy. During his time as a mercenary he had learned much about how to withstand a siege. Using this knowledge he had drawn up a plan to improve the defensive capabilities of Kiev. Construction was begun in May 13th but Vsevolod would not live to see it's completion.

Mine died in '99 :D

That's a spectacular accomplishment of a life, even though the game makes you spill a lot more blood than real history would have required during this period...but this way, perhaps, it's more securely tied together.

@ Enewald : Not by much, most of the territory captured is basically tundra and I doubt reindeer make good cavalry.
@ demokratickid : Things will change once Vladimir takes the throne and tries his hand at international politics. For now however it's business as usual and that means war.
@ RGB : That's an impressively long reign compared to anything I've ever had playing Pereyaslavl. Vsevolod still has great things in store and he just might live longer than you expect.

The Northern Campaign - part 2

Title.jpg

As it was still early in the season Vsevolod had plenty of opportunity to continue his northern campaign. The Bulgars to the south were in a losing war with the Polovtsy and offered a tempting target. Vsevolod decided against this as it could bring him into conflict with the Polovtsy. Instead Vsevolod decided to strike west, against the tribe of Karelia who had dispossesed Mstislav.

The Karelians were quick to repond and laid siege to Pskov. Forseeing this Davyd had travelled to Pskov and begun recruiting. The army he had assembled was able to drive the Karelians off. Unfortunately the fleeing army was able to join with other Karelian forces from further north. Toghether they attacked Novgorod.

This distraction proved to be their undoing. With the Karelians otherwise occupied Vsevolod was able to move unopposed into their territory. He quickly captured Trans-portage and North Dvina, opening up a route to the White Sea.

Davyd had led his small regiment against the larger army of the Karelians in Novgorod. His brilliance paid off and the Karelians were destroyed. The Karelians, not wanting to lose even more territory made peace with Vsevolod for the territory he had already captured.

Vsevolod made Konstantin Visilievich, one of the Novgorodian lords who Mstislav had installed, Prince of Bjarmia. He was a brilliant leader and his son looked likely to be even better. Vsevolod hoped the lands would prosper. Instead the populace revolted against the foreign rulers and an outbreak of Dysentery compounded the problem.

Vsevolod cared little, happy with his gains he sent the Novgorood and Pskov regiments home while he and Davyd returned south.

He's just all over the place, that man.

Good thing he quashed all the potential opposition back in the capital, eh?

@ RGB : The most disloyal courtier at this stage is Davyd which will cause problems later on. Technically Novgorod is the capital for now even if all the important people have stayed in Kiev. Kiev is fairly safe, Vladimir isn't far away if trouble does crop up. Novgorod however is surrounded by pagans and Pskov which is in almost constant rebellion.
@ Enewald : THat's why he is on his way south.

Only 2 replies, That's disappointing :(

Title.jpg

Vsevolod was not yet ready to rest. Instead he and Davyd raised the regiments of Chernigov and East Kiev and marched once more against Svyatoslav. Although only half the size of the army he had raised earlier he was still able to easily defeat Svyatoslav and the Novgorod Seversky regiment.

Vsevolod returned to Kiev allowing Davyd to complete the siege. Vsevolod's daughter Prebrana had come of age and returned from Rostov. Instead of becoming the great spymaster he had hoped she had taken well to accounting. Vsevolod decided to marry her to Simeon and allow the husband/wife team to manage the realms finances.

Despite the age disparity the couple was soon expecting a child of their own. Davyd and Eirene's first child was a daughter who they choose to name Uliana.

Things turned out very badly for Svyatoslav. Although Merya sent aid, Simeon of Ryazan rebelled and lent his troops to Davyd and his siege. Soon the city fell and Svyatoslav joined his brother and nephew as exiled princes. As a reward for his aid Simeon was made Prince of Ryazan and Vladimir was given Novgorod Seversky.

Upon hearing the news of Davyd's victory Vsevolod raised the Kiev regiment and headed to Beretsky where Izyalsv had made his home. The battles goes well for vsevolod as does the siege. Soon Izyaslav was once again on his knees before Vsevolod.

Late morning, July 13th, 1084 – Beretsky

“A familiar scene” Vsevolod said to his brother.
“Damn you, brother” Izyaslav spat.
“At least I can take comfort that that scumbag Vladimir has got his due”
Vsevolod rose to his feet a tear coming to his eye.
“You shall not talk of him that way. Despite his flaws he was a good and faithful servant. There is nothing more noble than for a man to serve his lord. You should do well to remember this.”
“What does it matter, I am as good as dead., you have what you want, my titles, my cities, even my dear sons bow before you.”
“I am not completely without honour as you may think. Your life is spared and if you have any love for your sons you will hear me out.”
“Poland is greedy andturns her eyes on you. I offer you my protection if you will bow before me. I will even allow you to remain Prince of Volhynia. What do you say.”
Izyaslav had expected his death so this was a surprise.
“I accept your offer.”
“Very well. Your co-opertion is appreciated. Because I am generous I will even raise your son Svyatopolk as Prince of Turov.”
Izyaslav though little of Vsevolod's generosity but held his tongue.
“One day” he thought “We will have our revenge”
