The Italian Army was scoring an unprecedented string of victories in Africa, however during Operation Compass the merciful and kind hearted Italian soldiers decided to surrender to avoid a bloodbath battle (which inevitably would have been mostly British blood, you know)

An actual example of Italian awesomeness.
In December 1941, two Italian divers were captured by British guards in the port of Alexandria. They wouldn't say what they were doing, so they were locked inside one of the ships anchored there. Some time late, a boom was heard from somewhere in the harbor. At that moment, the two captives informed the captain that there would be a similar explosion on this ship. Which promptly happened, because their team has fixed mines on four British ships in the harbor.
No one died, but two battleships were out of action for six months, and the Italian navy had once again naval superiority in the Mediteranean.

The Italian bomber crew knowing that it was for the benefit of their Squadron and having knowledge that the enemy pilot didn't have any ammo, chose to on purpose let the enemy fighter ram them and then crashland to force the pilot (who they knew was equipped with a pistol) to land his aircraft on an unsuitable location and arrest them so he cant chase down the remaining fighters from their squadron. Truly an act of self sacrifice and bravery.
