Played my first game as England, got my PU with France, owned Burgandy, made a fleet 5x larger than any other nation's fleet, but could not defeat Castille and Portugal's navy. It should be easy enough, if I ever caught them! The did laps around Great Britain over and over. I even split up my ships and had them go around both directions, in which case they would go to open sea and around. It was ridiculous! I spent like 5 years chasing ships and never catching them!

You have to split your navy into light ships/others, since light ships travel much faster then the rest. That way you can quite easily catch them with the light ships, and reinforce with the rest.

Unless they can dock right away, that is, but then you can blockade their fleet :D

that's a good solution, also, don't forget that you use same mechanic to stay alive when the AI have the bigger fleet, it works both ways
