I play as the Byzantine Empire, my ruler was ousted from the throne and I eventually played as his son, who was degraded to a Duke. Then a couple years later, somebody started a war on our new liege for my claim on the throne, yet I was actually the enemy of the vassal who started the war for my claim and sided automatically with the current liege. How does such a scenario even make sense? And why can't I switch sides during the actual war?

Why didn't you join your own "<yourname> for Byzantine Empire" faction? 0.0 That would've made you an ally in the fight.

That said, yes, it is a bit silly that you are automatically on your liege's side if you're not a part of the faction, even if your own claim is involved.

Yes, I just kind of forgot about the faction during that time, but I think automatically becoming involved on the side of my claim when the faction causes war would be bad too. I think you should just get a decision on which side to participate once it gets to the point of war. I hope there'd be a mod that fixes this.

CK2+ overhauled the faction system to a (IMO) much better form. You do get an event asking you to pick sides in a rebellion, so I say give that one a try.
