So I start as the king of France and give my younger sons in marriage to various duchesses, thinking, what the heck, I can use them in case the main line fails.

As it so happens... every one of those marriages became a matrilinear marriage. My oldest son was an imbecile and fathered no heir, and then the kingdom went to the second son who had 3 sons of different dynasty.

I had to introduce seniority, but that meant increasing authority = rebellions = game over in the next generation since the only Capet left was a legitimized bastard hated by all.

Matrilinear marriages don't just pop into existence, you signed off on each one. What do you want the game to do? Tell you it might not be a good idea to marry all your spare heirs away from the family?

If you marry them off as children sometimes the AI will send a matrilinear marriage request once they are sixteen. I've sometimes just click off on it.

They can be a weapon if your a small land. Do a Matrilinear marriage and have a kid, then kill off the mother and the kid will get the land, then kill off kid and you will get the lands. Then if you want a heir marry some other woman :)

Reading comprehension is a valuable skill to learn in order to be successful in these games.

Please allow me to explain what happened a bit better. I betrothed the second and third sons as children and my king died before they were married. Then, when their elder imbecile elder brother took over and had no children of his own, the two heirs to the throne agreed to matrilinear marriages with a duchess and a countess.

Can't remember any more whether I was asked or not, but its something that one needs to take into account, that "regulars" betrothals might turn into matrilinear marriages.
