I just hope You will liberate poor kind-hearted faithfull Lithuanian catholics from that oppressive pro-German pro-Hohenzollern puppet and bring them to the flock of Your Lord Jesus Christ and save from all possible seductions from syndicalists.
All those who oppose our Lord's divine will shall perish: heretics, syndicalists, capitalists. Amen!!! (Hellsing - Father Anderson style)

Chapter One: Road to War
Episode IV - Thy sins begone, Hapsburg!

Federation's march towards Trento and Veneto did not surprise any of major European players. As decay of Austria-Hungary was progressing, its neighbours were jumping in and out of war to take their share of Austrian cake. Day after Italian declaration of war, autonomous government and parliament of Galicia voted to rejoin Poland after more than a century of Austrian rule. In next few days both Orthodox powers - Serbia and Romania - moved west to reclaim supposedly their territory of respectively Bosnia and Transylvania.

Pressed from all directions and openly ignored by Germany, both leaders of Dual Monarchy were struggling to claim superiority in this uneasy relation. Stopping foreign incursions was far beyond possibilities of both.

On 9th March Fourth and Sixth Legion crossed Austrian border and moved towards undefended cities of Tirol. Austrians rapidly sent their elite mountain troops back to Italy to repel attackers from Venezia and then break assault forces coming from Lombardy.

But what could thirty thousands of fragile souls accomplish standing against Will of God? Fifth and Seventh Legion kept on pressing defenders of Venezia and defenders of Venezia were not ones to give up easily.

Thirty thousands of firm mountain infantrymen, true elite and bulk of Habsburg forces.

By commiting all their forcesto defend Veneto they left themselves immobile, hoping for reinforcements from Vienna to cover their rear. However, no help arrived to aid the mountaineers.

On 19th March Romagna Legione liberated city of Udine, cutting down last route connecting Vienna and Venice.

Given a chance to surrender, doomed Austrians decided to fight until the very end.

Their futile struggle against overwhelming numbers and stubbornness of their lord will be remembered.

0UKcklV.png

Four days after terrifying loss in Italy, Kaiser, pressed by his ministers had to agree to sign peace with Innitzer.

His greed and ill ambition proved to be fatal for his retainers - sin, which can not be forgotten. But maybe it is a sacrifice of Tiroler Jaegers that will cleanse and calm ancient, rampant soul of Habsburgs?

It remains to be seen, however our Lord Herr Innitzer believes it was needed to return this sheep back to its flock.

Treaty of Trieste returned Italian territories of Veneto and Trento back to Italian Federation. Both joined Federation as Papal Provinces, directly administrated by Papal ministers. As every province was expected to raise and upkeep a military legion, Veneto has been assigned as Eleventh and Trento as Twelveth Military Region. Innitzer hopes that two new legions will be raised here before spring of 1939.

Finest German factories and equipment - an mpressive Habsburg bequest - should be most appreciated assets for Federation.

Also souls, souls liberated from sin and brought back to God. Where else could they be safe from a hellish threats, like Marxism?

Herr Otto, you hath proven that there is still a hope to enlighten your soul, we will gratefully accept your tribute and pray for your soul.

Thy sins begone, Hapsburg!

Acquisition of Austrian industrial assets certainly spurred growth of Italian military. Every man and gun Italy can get is neccesary to keep up with mortal enemies of God. Massive military production was also somewhat good for an average citizens - many workers were required to speed up formation of new Legions - who knows when the Apocalypse will start?

For thy not know when Apocalypse will come, live like if it was going to come tommorow.

Innitzer was pressing hard to squeeze as much resources for military needs as he possibly could. Rampant economical crisis which spread from Berlin all over the Europe like a plague was not helping him in achieving his goals.

Leaving economy to do its own thing was not a good idea. It surely requires a greater authority to stop exploitation and gambits of the richest people.

It was the time when Innitzer recalled a brighter side of his teacher, Pope Pius. His idea of Catholic Corporations would surely work.

"But not only to gather the flock and lead it to pasture - he thought - but also to spread The Holy Word among it, to first and foremost make sure that a wise idea of Catholic Solidarity will not turn into one of these Marxist gatherings exploited by a few demons in charge of it...

On 8th April of 1937 Italian parliament voted for formation of Catholic Corporations. Although short-term wise Italy was to suffer from expenses needed to rework current system, long-term wise it could only benefit from it by getting rid of crisis and setting up a basis for modern, healthy economical system.

Hapsburgs were surely taught a lesson by the Holy Father! His wisdom and leadership genius will bring Papal states back to world stage. Those lands will be no more a mere source of fight for prestige of foreign empires. Those forces will bow to Papal power instead.

Great news.
I just wait for the reclamation of the southern Italy.
Also I will be awaiting for the photos of the beheaded heads on the poles of those hellish syndicalists spanning all Italian main roads up to Rome.
Buhahahaha...

I can only imagine what sort of strife could have been caused if John XXIII had been Pope and approved independent trade unions. You would have fallen to the revolution.

Chapter One: Road to War
Episode V - Way of Example

Brutal Italian, Romanian and Serbian entries to Danubian conflict could not stop frantic fights between Austrians and Hungarians - both didn't seem to bother with foreign incursions too much.

While seeking revenge, the German and the Magyar pushed themselves to the limit and exhausted to the end. And when it happens, the gate opens itself and allows Satanic forces to sneak by and curse unlucky one.

From there it is not far to reach the deepest circles of Hell, via the Reign of Hate.

And it was encompassing the world, squeezing it tighter and tighter, to the point when one could not breath.

In May a third civil war in span of one year followed. This time Spain, a true Bastion of Christianity and most loyal ally of Pope itself has fallen prey to Marxist demons. Marxists, like a Saracens, are aiming to obliterate Christanity, crown the Anti-Christ as new Christ, inject the sin into pure but fragile souls...

It is our duty to aid the true successors to Spanish Legacy, the Carlists. Prince Xavier is the most suited man to heal the broken spirit of Spain and save it from the kind of hell spawn Communist are.

Unsurprisingly, whenever a strong becomes weak, Kaiser makes sure to appear and by promising a help enslave troubled ones. Now that Wilhelm announced he will protect Europe from Internationale, it makes Germans look like a saviours for those who oppose Communism.

But it is Pope, not Kaiser, who upholds Legacy of Heaven. A German, he might have all the weaponry and soldiers under his command, but not even one soul - just servant and slaves, ready to switch allegiance if circumstances will allow them to.

8tXDEne.png

However, to break the core of demonic ideologies Pope too requires a hefty amount of guns, artillery pieces and all kinds of steel devices designed to shorten others route to afterlife. A grand militarization plan has been progressing exceptionally good. Innitzer was not sure when will Italy be ready to survive the storm, but every single day which remained a peaceful one was increasing Federation's chances of survival.

Some generals even suggested that Federation could intervene in one of external conflicts around Mediterranean Sea to increase its influence. With this in mind a naval reorganization followed in September of 1937. Whilist main and transport fleet remained in Genoa awaiting orders, a flotilla of submarines was ready to scout coast of Catalonia, Tunisia and Sicily any time.

Innitzer pressed for extended investments in technological advancements. Around the time of naval reorganization, the most prominent land commanders were called by Innitzer to Florence for a conference about strategic situation of Italian Federation.

During this conference Innitzer demanded a plan of offensive against southern Marxists. It was the first time when Pope openly suggested that he wants to conquer Neapolitana with his own divisions.

The Pope! How many divisions has he got?

A conference attendants estimated that the numbers will be growing faster and faster. Around spring of 1939 Italy should form its Twelveth Legion assigned to Trento area. It means that about forty divisions will be at Italian disposal at the moment.

A few weeks later, during meeting of War Council (Pope and chiefs of armed forces) a first version of operation "Etrusco" has been presented to Pope.

Innitzer was said to be most pleased with his generals effort.

e07y0xS.png

Reclamation and necessary repairs to post-Austrian industrial complexes in Trento and Veneto have been finished around October. Overjoyed Innitzer called for second wave of mobilization, this time including infantry divisions with special engineer detachments designed to operate in rough areas.

Alps are a very demanding enemy, sometimes even tougher than nations living around it.

Considering that a few months earlier a formation of cavalry corps designated to take a leading role in encirclments and most of all 'Etrusco' plan, Italy was most likely spending the biggest percent of its budget in Europe to expand military.

Pope will have enough divisions to accomplish his goals.

And his preparations were progressing nicely. On 23rd October Ninth Legion 'Savoia' has been deployed at the westernmost part of Federation, in former lands of Savoyard Duchy.

But that was not the most important news of 1937's autumn.

After the fall of Budapest Hungarians were fighting against all odds, they managed to stand for next two months, but in the end on 2nd October Austrians claimed victory over Hungary. A six months of fratricidal war left former Austro-Hungarian Empire in ruins.

The good news is that Otto, the Habsburg Heaten, he hath learneth his lesson. His soul has reached the enlightment and is ready to embrace the Christ.

Right after the victory Kaiser confessed that he has no heart to punish his enemies. Defeated Hungarian soldiers and captured government were simply allowed to live on, and help Otto in rebuilding destroyed Empire.

And it remained an Empire only for a week. On 13rd October Otto proclaimed formation of Danubian Federation, to unite all former nations of Austria-Hungary in peace.

It is undoubtedly a success for Papacy, for the Heathen witnessed bloodshed of his retainers and driven by the misery of fallen comrades promised to never allow to kill or oppress.

5KWmy9R.png

It was a lesson taken hard way by Otto, but such is the Pope's role - to educate the brethren and lead it forward towards God.

And by such Way of Example he shall return all the astray souls to Him.

Whatever the cost may be.

Fin.

Keep up the good work!

Well Kaiser Billy is also a Lutheran, so the Pope has no reason to love him.

I hope that lack of understanding between Holy Father and his Hapsburg servants is only temporary. It would be wonderful to cut Austrians from access to warm sea, but compensate them with control over unfriendly Lutheran Prussia in the future (so they get Baltic waters instead of Adriatic ones). Catholic-lead Holy German Empire with capital in Vienna would be nice piece in harmonic picture of new European order that would rise under the guidance of Holy See.

Most of the trouble started when Habsburgs lost Saxony to Prussia.

Edit: Anyways, it is good to see that the Pope is also peacefull when necessarry when educating Otto

Let us hope the Carlists manage to unify Spain and provide you with a capable ally at the vulnerable southern French border. Also, it'll be interesting to see how the Danubian Federation treats its lost Italian territories.

Wow, the Austrian Empire/Danubian Federation basically lost every last territory it could in all this. It lost Bosnia to Serbia, independent Montenegro, Galicia's with Poland, Trento and Venice were lost to ours truly and Romania's taken it's lands back from Hungary. Not only did the Hungarians lose the Civil War, they pretty badly damaged the territorial integrity of the empire. I rarely see a unified Austrian Empire come out with so many of its territories lost.

It'll only get worse if we end up taking the other territories from Austria that Italy claimed IRL. They'll barely have access to the Med.

Chapter One: Road to War
Episode VI - Cain and Abel

After a year of Innitzer's rule Holy See has changed drastically. A group of cardinals not fond of Pope's actions were detached to take care of lesser tasks, like nominations for new bishops and cardinals, changes in ecclestial administration all over the world or dialogue with various national churches.

Herr Innitzer is not a mere bureaucratic puppet to be bothered with attrocities of Ghana Primate or administrational allegiance of Gleiwitz. Upper Silesian or Lower Silesian Archibishopric - which one is more suited to aid Catholics in Glewitz? Or maybe let's cede this area to Primate of Poland directly?

Innitzer could not be bothered less. "As long as they defy sin and follow the Book, it is not our concern" - he mentioned once - "Had they sinned or wronged someone, God will surely judge them when the Day comes."

Pope was rarely even visiting Vatican - unofficial headquarter of secret War Council has been held in Firenze, where soon Navy rebased to. Innitzer was spending most of his time travelling between arms factories, local headquarters of Legions and general headquarter in Firenze.

He could not think of anything else but Apocalypse and making sure that everything goes all according to his will, with typical German precision and punctuality.

Everything had to be done exactly as he planned and knowing the weakness of human beings he could not allow any mistake to slip unnoticed.

In April Innitzer suggested intervention in Middle East, where Ottoman Empire faced serious Arab and Kurdish uprising. Tuscan and Lombard legion were being prepared to be sent to Jerusalem. However, since expected attack of Egypt and Arabians didn't happen, Pope called the invasion back.

"We might not get distracted. It is what the Satan wants us to do and we cannot gamble when his presence can be sensed."

Ottomans quickly purged both uprisings and reestablished control over Syria and Iraq. Surely it was good decision to not get involved after all.

Year of 1938 remained a very mysterious and surprising year. One could expect outbreak of next hostilities after breakdowns in Russia, America, Spain and Dual Monarchy. However, nothing else happened - not counting continuous civil wars which started in 1937 of course.

Tempo of militarization was getting more and more impressive. It could be felt that Innitzer himself was taking care of all planning. Legions of Tirento (combined forces of Sardinia and Corsica), Veneto and Trento have all been formed and thoroughly trained until Autumn of 1937. Innitzer obviously didn't want to stop here, and production of infantry equipment continued.

First two mobile legions have also been formed in 1938. Thirteenth (Lazio II) and Fourteenth (Umbria II) Legions were consisting fully of cavalry divisions, designated to spearhead through broken ranks of southern Socialists and rush to key cities of Republic like government's seat in Naples or main naval base in Taranto.

"Etrusco" - Italian plan of combined offensive against South from land and sea has been coming to fruition. Although French fleet in western Mediterranean Sea could easily grind Federation's Navy, it was settled that Sicily will be invaded from sea, as one of the Legions will assault shore of Palermo.

Emergency meeting called on 7th December of 1938 decided to finally start first phase of two anti-Internationale plans: "Etrusco", which is aggression in the south, and "Galileo" - general defensive plan to counter potential French offensive.

ZysqkxB.png

The reason Innitzer called for emergency meeting and launched preparations for "Etrusco" and "Galileo" were simple: a first serious war has reached Europe.

Although Iceland was surely far away from Rome, it was the spark which ignited flames of British fratricide again.

Royalist government in Ottawa could not hold itself and declared war on Union of Britain on 6th December of 1938. A recent crisis in Iceland - infighting between pro-Canadian and pro-British forces - has been submitted as casus belli.

It is indeed way too far away from Rome - both states have no influence at all in Mediterranean - but it was the most worrying news that one of Internationale members is at war.

Immediate call for World Revolution from Paris has been expected anytime. All the Legions in Northern Italy were preparing to be redeployed on their positions indicated in Plan Galileo.

However, the news from Paris were most shocking. Day after declaration of war, on 7th December, French Central Comitee stated that "Atlantic War is neither a conflict nor interest of French Proletariate".

A sudden breakdown cheered most of Italian leadership. Could Franco-British relations not be as good as it seems? Could Britain and France potentially not be following the same path?

Either way, Galileo has already been started by War Council and Innitzer decided that there is no reason to stop it. Soon the forts western border of Federation were filled with Legions.

"But, overall Europe seems to be at peace, no?" - one of the officers asked.

Aogirn4.png

"It is, for now..." - Innitzer sighed - "...but this conflict, Atlantic War, it is a sign for all of us from Him."

How could it possibly be so?

"The mankind, it succumbs to Satan's will...just a few months ago no one in Ottawa would allow to execute attack so reckless, and today it is an open war! Day after day, living in this madness, souls driven by the crave of blood can not hold their backs any longer, and soon, soon no one will be able to!"

"The war...the war is inevitable, for even former brothers are willing to kill each other."

"And like the Cain killed Abel, the death cycle begins again."

Fin.

I believe that in the eve of The End no one would be bothered with that, as the goal is to save all the souls. I really hoped for a crusade in Holy Land

@Asalto
It is not a mere king or ruler that is fit to rule Christian World, no? ;)

@Enclave
As long as they follow the Pope, there is no need to shed the blood. We can shed some Marxist one in exchange.

@Milites
They were quite pain the ass to be honest, they slowed my techteam once and disrupted one Infantry round. But well, let's say that officialy everything's fine...unless Pope will have opportunity to educate Otto some more...

@NACBEAST
Yeah, it happens much more often now. The reason is that Hungary are getting more divisions now and Ausgleich War takes some serious time to play out. I guess that united Empire lacks events about reclamation of lost territories - mostly ones lost by Hungary (Transylvania).

Oh, that was really nice in fact! I doubt anyone here doesen't like those lovely beasts of steel.

Well, there goes the UoB's peacetime IC modifier. They're quite keen on amphibious landings so it'll be interesting to see if they actually manage to take out the Canadians. I'm also glad to see that you're ambitious with plan Etrusco, I'm usual rather cautious with my naval forces in the early engagements with the International, but if it's done right you might be able to finish off the southerners in time to reinforce the north in operation Galileo. Just one more year to go before the Alsace-Lorraine issue sets the world on fire....

About that, amphibious attacks with minors can be tricky, as you lack both the best units and doctrines. In one game with La Plata I launched one in Brazil, but only because the province was undefended.
