Some of you might remember the original :D

What is this?
Have you ever been a fan of Sid Meier´s Alpha Centauri? But you also really like Paradox-Style-games? Then this mod for Victoria:Revolutions is for you! (And of course everyone else too, but especially for YOU:D) Within this mod, we try to recreate the Atmosphere of Alpha Centauri, it´s classy tech dialogs and great desing choices with the greatness of one of, if not the best Paradox-game ever.

What is included?
- Adapted Graphics
- Adapted(e.g. copied over) sound-fx, music, quotes, much new text
- Adapted "Huge Planet Map" for maximum authenticness
- New Units, Techs, Ressources, Factorys, Parties, Nations, Crapload of Events and whatever the hell else we can think of putting in...
- 500 Years timeframe (2100 to 2600)
- Mindworms!

How fares development?
Goes well, goes well, currently in between alpha stage and design stage, we strive for, mhmm, a playable alpha in at the latest 2 months, if possible.

What is already done?
- Some interface-graphics, although by far not enough to make a single interface-mod out of it.
- Some fx have been made to fit the game, as well as main menu music, but more remains to be done
- A few technames have already been changed, but is still at an early stage

Where do you need further help?
- The map. If there is one thing I am not very able in, it is the map.
- Events (will need to study SMAC-stories and scenarios)
- Unitcount (not known at this point wether or not more than 3 land units are possible)
- many more things, currently not on mind.

Whom you got onboard?
Donnie D - Project lead and handyman

Donnie´s little helpers (these are the people nice enough to help out on the way!):
jonesy1289 - flags and shields
lipovan87 - ideas
And surely many more over the time...

Anything here is "Work in Progress"!
Current version:0.008

What do you mean by green shadow? An outline of green around certain objects?

If so, open in paint, fill all the 'off' green with white, then return it back to the shade of green which gets ignored in-game.

Font colour, I believe, is something you'll have to alter manually on every letter in "...\GFX\fonts\".

Thanks for the tip with the green outline, it did the trick for some object, seems the first ones will need a certain remake before continuing :D

About the Font colour, well, isn´t that fun

It´s a neverending story

Finally fixed those buttons. Very time-consuming in GIMP, but it works. Yay!

Map is still original, I still fail at very basic mapmaking-skills. However, Interface is at least done by ten percent, so Yay

Yes, the University is Belgium, but this is only temporary. On a sidenote, I finally seem to have gotten the portraits fine with the flags above them

Edit: As you can see, I changed the Endgame-screen, just something a little bit more fitting, although alot is still amiss.
Edit2: Even more funny, with the new endgame-screen, I seem to have become unable to discern the black of austria and prussia :D

If you dare, Mr.Capiatlist, try it. I can give you screens of the actual planetmap from SMAC itself as well as the minimap button for, well, minimap.

Don´t worry about time. Reread my statement about alpha phase on the very first post :D Instructions were floating around somewhere on the forum, if I remember correctly. MapUtility - I do believe you already know this ;) Take your time. It´s free for all at the moment, even I myself am mostly in a stage of graphics before others, so, interface first, then names and stuff. I am a visual person. Arrrg, bad me!:D

One thing that could be very helpful in your endeavour is the posession of the game for your own, even more insightful look into the original map, we´d use the "huge planet map", as it seems to be the most planned about it all

If you like the map, we could possible divide it up and let multiple people get to work dividing things up. I've actually never played Alpha Centuari, so I have no idea about province names or anything. I read something quick about pirates, so I included straits and island chains for them to raid and camp out in (respectively).

Heh, I am in school for the design and construction of deep-space rockets, why bother with a game when I will be working on the real thing. :p

Real excuse: Way too much homework for any addicting game. I've seen SMAC before, and I enjoy Civ as well; but I have a good CK game going and I don't need any more distractions from the real world.

Here is an idea for the main continents and oceans with some beta names:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v126/apollo1129/WithContinents2.gif

Remember, this map is HUGE... cuz that is how I roll.

(Oceans use darker colours than land masses)

And some ideas, remember... this is all up to Donnie D, I just have nothing better to do right now.

Continents:
Red - Krabbeland: Named for the shape, means "Crab Land" in German.
Blue- World's Collar: Named for its position and shape.
Green- Terra Nova: First landing site for Humans
Orange- Tartarus Mons: Named after Tartarus, it is bleak and dark
Teal- The Chain: Named for its shape.
Pink- Atlantia: Named after Atlantis.

Oceans:
Red- The Sea of Life: First settlements were on its coasts.
Blue- The Western Sea: Relative to Terra Nova.
Teal- The Great Sea: Largest ocean.
Purple- The Chain: Separated from the Great Sea by the Chain Islands.
Green- The [Dragon's] Maw: Named for its shape, technically part of the Sea of Life.
Brown- The Eastern Sea: Relative to Terra Nova.

Background:
Tartarus Mons and the Chain were once a single continent, broken apart by earthquakes and volcanic eruption. Tartarus Mons was left scared and barren, once the home to a great alien civilisation. It would be possible for the factions to unlock special events for controlling certain provinces and having a high enough industrial capacity. They could unlock tech, prestige, weapons let you mind go crazy.

Humans arrived on Terra Nova, hence its name. It has a Major and Minor halves, and the original colonies were founded on the coasts between the two halves (to ensure safety and trade).

The image didn't seem to load for some reason, it might be because I'm downloading a lot right now though. I like the idea of naming the continents as I don't think that Firaxis bothered to, also I'm not sure if it matters or not but the manual had a lot of scientific information about the world (distance from its suns, other planets in the solar system, size etc.) you could probably find a pdf of it on the internet without much looking. EDIT: While Terra Nova is a great name ( I actually call it that half the time) in the game it is Chiron, I can't recall the reason for it right now however.

As fascinating as I find the idea of a new continent, I am sorry to put dampers on your creativity, as I´d rather like to use the original map design for start. Would that be ok with you?

I will soon start providing pictures of the original planet surface, just give ma a few minutes.

About the Units
I fear so, so these 3 Units will kind of show the very evolution of weaponry, dragoons may become rovers while cavalry may become grav-tanks, or the other way around. We certainly have more than enough uses for the navy, as it will play a vital role in planetary combat as well as being able to use enough models with different statistics, as we would then be able to use ships with nuclear engine and so on until we get to the quantum-engine :)
However, it would of course be best if someone find out if it is possible to add more land units to the game.

Edit:
I´ve uploaded a complete map of planet, use it at your discretion

Edit2: The good thing about your idea, Capiatlist, is, that we can use many of the names etc. for provinces unnamed in the game. Which are many. A lot, to say. The Main province of each faction should however be named after the starting base names of each faction.

However, first, the techtree from the original:

I like keeping the old map from SMAC.

Parties may be difficult. One might be able to simulate some of the differences by renaming the parties.

The Spartans being an example might have the
Naval Faction (Liberals) with events giving benefits for naval aspects
Land Faction (Conservatives) with events giving land benefits but also hurting relations with other sides
Planet Faction (Anarcho-Liberals) giving some theoretical benefits based on planet. This might be hard given that there are very few events that might hurt players so the only response might be improved resource production.
Elite Junta (Reactionaries) giving a more dictatorial system with State capitalism but also jingoism
NCO Movement (Socialists) giving benefits to reducing militancy via events
Peace Faction (Communists) hurting military readiness via events
Secret Police coup (Fascists) benefits military readiness but might have other effects.

Drones will also have to be accounted for but this might be handled by having highly increased militancy or by adding in a culture of Drones whose difference from the rest of a Faction's population might provide the productivity hit desired.

Alternatively, Ideology might be substituted for Religion.
We might get a pop as such
Irish, Hive, Commune,,,,
next to
Chinese, Hive, Commune,,,,

The Factions would be mono-ideological at first but would have different cultures (being joined not out of nationality but ideology in SMAC). The population movements would eventually assimilate the people into one main culture instead of the initial diversity.

You might get
Hive: Chinese
Spartans: Yankee
Believers: Dixie
Morganites: Sotho
Peacekeepers: Arabs
Gia: Irish

Drones: German (or some other red colored Nationality)

But that would leave too much of an "Earth" feeling to it.

Goods would also have to be altered.

Duricrete or other items might be added in addition to things like network nodes that are in SMAC for the sake of filling in gaps. People need to build and cement is too dull. Refined Fungi might be used in place of trpical wood for example.

Is it possible to add more units? Could new units be added to the section. Admittedly they would need new graphics but I wonder if the game restricts the number of land unit types?

What about also posting the version in progress so the rest can track what there is so far?

I admit liking your ideas. Mind me using them?

However, for starters, I´d say we restrict the numbers of parties, to one, for playtests of course.

About Drones, I first thought as simply using very highly increased militancy, after all, that was, what drones were meant to represent, if I remember correctly.

The Ideology-Religion Idea is excellent and will be used as such- Spartans would be Spaniards and SouthAmericans, Morganites from Sotho, oh the irony of making the Sotho moneyleeching grubby capitalists

Goods will be altered, but, as I said before, in this early stadium, the nearest we will come to is renaming and using SMAC-pics for them. For now.

About units, I have to admit, that I simply do not know at this point, however, if everything about this game is as easily moddable as we know most of it to be, then I doubt, that there really will be such a big problem as to adding new units. However, upgrading in itself as well as self-creation might become a problem.

Prestige becomes now "Power", just as we know the old power-list in the old game, feeble, formidable yadda yadaa

Current Version: 0.005 (Note: This is as low I a can get, after all we are currently in the facial department only, as there is neither map nor many real changes influencing the game up until now.)
