In 1866 war erupted between Prussia and Autria in the battle for control over Germany. After some equivocation, France threw her might into the war against Prussian aggrandisement, attacking from the Alsatiian forts into the Rhineland.

... pausing only to rack up a few colonies ...

1866colonialgb1.jpg

Sadly the war was thrown into confusion by the arrival of Prussian reservists all over the place and by the plethora of minor German nations...

1866confusionke9.jpg

By 1867 French troops had regained the upper hand. Sadly, Austria and Prussia concluded a peace deal creating two separate German federations, one for each Great Power.

1867austriapeaceif0.jpg

Peace was concluded with much of the Rhineland ceded to France, and a few years later internal turmoil in Prussia brought the North German Federation into France's sphere of influence.

Meanwhile, France pressed ahead claiming African colonies and bringing civilisaton to the savage breast:

Prussia still had a few irritating colonies, necessitating a colonial war starting in 1873, taking most of Prussia's remaining African colonies

... and random bits of junk they'd taken off the Danes ....

Sadly, whie colonialism in Africa could continue unabated, France had no bases near enough the remaining bits of the Pacific...

Are you having any problems with revolts or POP militancy? In my France game by 1860 the whole of the mainland was reading at 1-5% revolt chances from the unhappy conservative POPs.

I've had some revolt problems because of war exhaustion (starting one colonial war as soon as finished another). However the only POPs who rebel because of militancy are the Communists.

Auto industrialisation means that you cannot build factories on your own? Do you still need machine parts for capitalists to build a factory? Rate of construction of factories/railroads depends on what...?

Conquer Belgium! Borders would look nice then, since you have Rhineland :).

These questions are well discussed on the main Vicky forum. There's also a thread there about how France will never build any railroads and why it's not worth playing

That is nice to hear, I am micromanager but as long as the new system works fine that is good to hear. Nice game so far too...

You might like a government with State Capitalism then. You can micromanage your economy, but your capitalists will still build things if they're making a big enough profit.

It's nice having the capitalists autobuild railroads, that was always an annoyance for me. Factories can be a problem sometimes, they build what they think will make money rather than what you might want. Unless you're one of the big 8 from the start you have to be prepared to buy most of your military equipment yourself.

Getting back to my Capitalists:

I've just taken a look at the ledger in 1886, halfway through the game. The difference between French industry in this game and how a player would have played it is remarkable. The Factories I currently have as as follows (a * indicates this industry has not grown since 1836)

Ammunition 2
Artillery 1*
Canned Food 1*
Cement 1
Clipper Convoy 1*
Explosives 1*
Fabric 1*
Fertilizer 2
Furniture 3
Glass 8
Liquor 6
Lumber 4
Luxury Clothes 2
Luxury Furniture 4
Machine Parts 1
Paper 3
Regular Clothes 3
Small Arms 2
Steamer Convoy 1
Steel 1
Wine 5

That's a total of 19 factories dedicated to the beverage industry! 13 related to clothes and furniture; 10 to military purposes; and 7 to construction. Including Paper there are 35 factories devoted to civilian production. Not necessarily how I would have played it.

And there are more shocking wine-related figures to come....

Looking at world production leaders of industrial goods there are more interesting observations.

FRANCE: Small Arms, Paper, Furniture, Luxury Furniture, Luxury Clothes
PRUSSIA: Wine, Clothes, Cement, Artillery
ENGLAND: Steamers, Machine Parts, Clippers
RUSSIA: Glass, Lumber, Canned Food
TWO SICILIES (????): Steel, Explosives
JAPAN: Ammunition
NORTH GERMAN FED: Fertiliser

- In spite of my large wine industry, Prussia has a bigger one! Prussia's capitalists have been drowning the world in Liebfraumilch!
- The Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, a state best known for being invaded by a man leading an army of biscuits, is the leading producer of two vital strategic goods. Presumably this is because it has a fairly planned economy.
- Leadership in other 'military' goods is evenly spread: small arms, moi; artillery, Prussia; steamers, UK; canned food, Russia; Ammunition, from Japan.

Fear the Two Sicilies!

Interesting look over the whole lot as well. I wonder how much that will change in the next fifty years. One wonders, given your comments on wine, who has dominance in the liquor market!
