Catholicism is one the few religions\denominations in EU4 that has no single built-in combat modifier except for situational crusades. Not only this is unbalanced or (for some people) misrepresents the religion (which is a slippery slope by itself), but it's also quite ahistorical to see how majority of players, that do not RP intentionally, switch to Protestant or Reformed because it's a way better choice.
In a game where WARFARE is the bread and butter and is the #1 gameplay feature there is little to no reasons to stay Catholic. Even The Papal State is often converted to Sunni to get the desired +10% Land morale.
I do agree, but I have to dissent on the Papal States getting converted to Sunni 'often' - they're the state closest to being outright hardcoded into a single religion, and it takes a significant amount of gamey gameplay to get there as them.

Player can convert to any heathen (non-Christian) religion by accepting rebel demands, but can't reconvert back to Christianity because of mentioned restrictions (on Papacy, ofc). Everything depends on the environment: SP or MP, neighbors, truths and amount of controlled Sunni lands, but in MP for The Papal State converting to Sunni after some point is a very good idea. Same problem was with Russia before the Orthodoxy buff: it was a very solid decision to convert to Sunni and get the desired +10% Land morale from Piety (old patches). Another option was to get PU'd by Sweden and get Protestantism enforced =)

These examples speak for themselves about how important it is to have any kind of military bonus for any religion.

Grand Historian, do you think it's possible to replicate Catholic religious orders with the Islamic Law schools introduced with CoC? That might be a bit easier to do, rather than model it after the patron deity system used by Hinduism.

Possibly. The interactions between nations having them would indeed be more historically accurate.

Maybe there could religious orders from the theocracies in game, that and some of the known orders, knights, teutonic, livonian could provide them. Could even be tied to the swiss if they get their own government type with their historical holy army I have heard about a bit. Be like merchs you can get from these countries if you are allied and maybe costs papal influence? An idea at that, any others?

Probably better to have something like that done alongside a general rework to Mercs.

What would the points along the scale be and what would their bonuses and/or mechanics be? Maybe Jesuit one end and something more purely proselytising the other end?

You're thinking of the Islamic Piety scale, I'm talking about the Islamic law schools. In CoC different Islamic countries get different law school bonuses, with the option to invite a scholar from another law school to get that school's bonus. There are currently 6 law schools in CoC, 3 Sunni and 3 Shia. Because "schools" can be added to any religion it's quite possible to add in religious orders to Catholicism using the law school mechanic introduced by CoC.

Yeah just noticed, mid week at work for me so brain isn't quite there haha.

So it would be the different mendicant orders then? What wpuld they be and would they be selectable or preset? I like the idea.

They would still be the Jesuits, Franciscans, Dominicans and Augustinians - they were indisputably the most numerous and powerful of the Catholic orders of the period (obviously aside from the Hospitallers) and the ones most active overseas.

I'll be honest, I don't even go for the Curia as a Catholic nation. I keep stability pegged at 3 and farm mercantilism. I actually think that the stability cost in PI being constant, while the stability cost in Adm gets very expensive at high end is OP for Catholics. It's particularly powerful for republics, who can keep president for life after president for life as long as they keep conquering and converting (to farm PI to buy stab with, because you sac stab to buy back RT). It feels a bit like a pyramid scheme, the moment you stop expanding you're buggered, but it is immensely powerful. Let vassals keep their own religion so that you have conversion fodder after you annex them. 100 mercantilism without paying any Diplo is very powerful as well, in a recent Italy run I ended up with a monthly income measured in "k".

I might suggest putting cooldowns on papal actions.

That sounds like a good idea for the insta-gain bonuses, though obviously the cooldown needs to be long enough to encourage people to use PI on over things rather than just wait for it to pass without being so long as to deny players the ability to get Stab in a pinch.

To be honest. I'd say there's no need for cooldown, as unless you are converting like crazy you are not gaining that much PI all things considered.
seeing as that kind of PI from conversion is mainly limited in a normal game to PLC, Colonizers like Castille, and Reformation in HRE and wars therein.
However inside HRE its slowed down by AE as well as the fact that most reformation converted provinces outside of Bohemia specific events have the nasty 100% conversion resistance for exceedingly long time.

I agree in principle, but as you won't be gaining crazy amounts of PI to begin with if you're not going to be min-maxing, the cooldown likely won't be very prohibitive to begin with.

Catholicism is now the worst religion in MP. Orthodox is the strongest. People go for orthodox as Austria or Milan now, WTF? Fix it.

I wrote a suggestion for Catholic and Orthodox CoR just today.
Why -5% dev cost could unbalance Reformation?

Why -5% dev cost could unbalance Reformation?
Because 1 point of heretic tolerance counts for far more in the speed of a CoR's conversion power than one point of local missionary strength.

The idea sounds really good and intresting, but wouldn't Spain/Austria/France abuse it the most, and these nations are already strong enough
