There are a few things that bother me with how autocephaly works. In no particular order here are some things that I would suggest be changed:
- the religious advisor of Ecumenical Patriarch should not be a patriarch – for whatever reason the religious advisor for the Ecumenical Patriarchate is “Patriarch of the Ecumenical Patriarchate”; he does not actually count as Partiarch as far as I know and he should probably be called Exlesiarch, instead;
- viceroys should not have their own Patriarchs – I have no idea why making the some dude in Serbia Exarch would remove him from the religious overlordship of the Ecumenical Patriarch, in fact I don't think that vassal kings should have Patriarch either, but that is more understandable;
- allow us to ask for excommunication even if we do not share head of religion (Orthodox only, Catholics with antipopes should keep the current requirement) – this is especially jarring if you have two or more vassal patriarchs; as Roman Emperor I directly hold all of Latium and Thrace, both Ecumenical Patriarch and the true Bishop of Rome are my pets, yet I can only ask one of my pets for excommunication – if my capital is in Thrace I can ask the Ecumenical Patriarch and if my capital is in Rome I can ask their patriarch, I think that I should be able o ask any of them for Excommunications within their designated areas;
- Wales, Galicia and Brittany should be part of the Patriarchate of Rome – this one seems like an oversight;
- with the addition of regions that is supposed to happen in the future, I would suggest that pentarchy be handled by regions, so that the area covered by, say the Patriarchate of Rome will always be the same;
- I would also suggest to make the system more flexible and allow different religions to have variable areas covered by their equivalent of pentarchy and variable number of “pentarchs”, so that say, Nestorianis could have a head of religion based outside the five seats and use autocephaly, but perhaps with no pentarchy.
