French events and dates.
Here are some historical events for France
1789: 14th July Bastille stormed
27th August Declaration of the rights of man
1790: Louis XVI accepts a new democratic constitution
1791: Louis XVI and family try to escape France
1792: National Convention abolishes Monarchy. France declares war on Austria and Prussia
1793: Louis XVI executed on 21st January. Marie Antoinette executed in October. Maximilian Robespierre takes power. Reign of Terror begins.
1794: France invades the Netherlands. Hebert and Danton are executed. Hebert in March, Danton in April. Robespierre arrested and executed in July, end of the Terror.
1795: Formation of the Directory or Directoire, who run the country. French make peace with Prussia, Italy and Spain, Austria and her allies fight on. French Government gives Toussaint L’Ouverture control of most of Haiti. The French Government freed all slaves in the colonies, but the plantation owners disobeyed and the slaves revolted against them. The French say he can control the island but under French over all rule.
1797: General Napoleon Bonaparte advances towards Italy and Austria.
1798: Napoleon captures Rome, then he invades Egypt. French troops move north into Germany
1799: Rosetta stone found. Napoleon leaves Egypt and his Army in Egypt and heads back for France to stop the mounting threat of Austrian invasion. Napoleon leads a coup and dissolves the Directory and appoints himself and 2 others Consuls, to rule France like a dictatorship.
1800: Plot to assassinate Napoleon fails.
1801: Toussaint L’Ouverture proclaims Haiti independent, Napoleon sends troops to reclaim the island for France. Toussaint L’Ouverture is captured and sent to France. He dies in prison in 1803.
1802: Napoleon is made First Consul for life.
1803: Jacques Dessalies leads another slave revolt in Haiti and drives the French out. He proclaims the independence of Haiti again.
1804: Napoleon crowns himself Emperor.
1805: Battles of Trafalgar and Austerlitz.
1806: Napoleon dissolves the Holy Roman Empire
1808: Peninsular war begins
1810: First canned food produced made in France
1812: Napoleon invades Russia and takes Moscow but soon retreats back to France
1813: Prussia, Britain, Russia, Austria and Sweden join forces and fight France at battle of Leipzig, were the French lose.
1814: Napoleon abdicates and is exiled to Elba. Louis XVIII reclaims the French throne.
1815: Napoleon escapes Elba and fights battle of Waterloo, he is defeated and exiles to St.Helena. Congress of Vienna redraws the map of Europe.
1816: Louis XVIII becomes king again
1824: Louis XVIII dies and Charles X becomes king, he acts if the revolution never took place.
1827: French and British ask the Turks to make peace with the Greeks in the war of Greek Independence. The Turks refuse. The British, French and Russian fleets destroy the Turkish fleet at the battle of Navarino.
1830: July revolution, Louis Philippe, Duke of Orleans is accepted as ‘citizen king’. France invades Algeria.
1831: Workers riot in Lyons.
