Are there date range restrictions on which nations can revolt / be released as vassals?

After taking out Granada, they were listed as a potential vassal. By the time I converted all three provinces to Catholicism, I could no longer release them. I assume that I passed the death date of Granada. Is this date set specifically in the text files, or is there perhaps a maximum length of time that a revolter can be non-existent before it can no longer be released? (Perhaps that length would match the time it would take to loose all cores?)

On a semi-related note, after forming Spain quite early, both Aragon and Castille were listed as potential vassals. Castille however would have received 0 provinces. I didn't try releasing a 0 province vassal, because I didn't want to cause a CTD. I did wind up having Aragon form in Sicily, as I didn't have any cores on Aragon's old territory and wound up with some unrest in the Mediterranean.

Perhaps Grenada can only be released as a muslim nation, but idk.

I thought about that. I hope that isn't the case; it seems to be against the new "historically plausible not historically accurate" stance of EU3.

Well, is it historically plausible? I don't really know much about Grenada, but would the people who lived in that area want to form "Grenada" after they had been converted to christianity? After all, Grenada was the muslim "defender" of Islamic Spain. I'm sure we could argue that we can't know wether they would want independence or not, but that argument could be used to demand the inclusion of alot of other nations into the game. Spain was divided into many states before Aragon and Castille.

Well, I'd actually like to see a lot more dead countries on the revolter / releasable list.
IMO, nearly ever province in Europe should be releasable, either as a dead nation that it has belonged to at one point, or a single province minor. If a region has enough of an specific identity to be a "province", then I don't see why it couldn't exist as its own nation. At the very least, it would make revolts in far off holdings more quickly a problem. If the people of Leon decide they don't want to listen to the King of Spain anymore, and have taken up arms against the King's men to prove just how forceful they are about not wanting to listen to him anymore, they shouldn't have to decide that they want to listen to some other King from some other country instead. They should simply decide that they can have themselves a new King for their province instead.

From my experience: If a country (even a country that doesn't exist) has cores on a provence, you can release them using that province. I don't know why it ends up with an inability to release vassals. Maybe it has something to do with War.

I guess a country now could probably be tied to the idea itself instead of merely being a geopolitical entity. It's probably like an Orthodox country controlling Thrace being able to release Byzantium (not that I'm saying this can be done :D) or a Muslim nation controlling Thrace being able to release the Ottomans.

Of course I'm not sure this is how it works ingame, but it's how I think the concepts are.
