Revoking heretic titles for free doesn't work properly at all.

I've been preparing my empire for the heretic find event from my court chaplain by cranking up CA to medium. My thinking was that if my ruler became a heretic, and with medium CA in all my empires, I could revoke titles freely because everybody else would be catholic.

However, that stuff is bugged to the heavens.

I made a test run and changed my religion to Cathar, and my hard-won medium CA immedately gets lowered one step automatically when I change religion. That doesn't make sense at all.

Also, even with my ruler being Cathar and medium, high or max CA, I cannot revoke the titles of catholic kings under me freely. What is going on here? It just doesn't make sense.

Well, two things: IMHO it does make a lot of sense that if a ruler converts to a heresy his crown authority will drop considering the whole populace and vassals aren't heretics (yet). Second, I haven't checked but in this case it seems to me that YOU are the heretic not them I *think* you need to install an antipope at least and probably also have him become pope before the situation reverts and catholics become heretics.

Heretics don't have religious heads and thus cannot have popes or antipopes.

I think it makes sense. Your vassals consider you a heretic so they are less likely to accept your rule. The crown authority law is an abstract measure of your control, not really a single law that automatically gets repealed.

If the kings aren't your de jure vassals, their own crown laws apply. I think you should be able to revoke your de jure vassals' titles. Alternatively, maybe you had a truce going on? In a truce you can only revoke titles of traitors.

It says "Free revocation of infidel titles", not necessarily heretic. If I conquer Greece as a Muslim, I can revoke all their titles because they're infidels, not heretics.

The only explanation I'd have would be that it doesn't work if you are a heretic in general, or if you are a heretic of the religion in question. You could argue that technically, there's a difference between a catholic being an infidel for you and a catholic being a heretic for you.

That's probably the issue. Catharism is in the same religion group as Catholicism, hence Cathars are not infidels--just heretics.

I tried Sunni, with the same result. No revokation allowed. I am emperor of Hispania, f.e., and cannot revoke the Kingdom of Galicia freely.

Also, forcibly lowering my CA is a no go. I can only change it once per lifetime at pretty harsh opinion cost. That stuff must not be lowered due to some undocumented stuff.

Go ahead, try it. "religion sunni" in the console. If you have medium CA and are an emperor, tell me if you can revoke king titles freely.

Just putting it out there:

If you want to fiddle with other CAs, and change them freely for the sake of testing (or pure cheating 8)), type "allow_laws" in console.

That doesnt mean you can immediately switch to another CA. People have to vote for it. That makes testing cumbersome.

IIRC and as I have told you above, your vassal should be the heretic, not you. Have a try at least so we know if it's that way.

I'll try that, but I dont really care about the result. If the ruler is Cathar, then everybody else is a heretic. There is no such thing as a "state religion". The ruler's religion determines his available actions.

I have played a few games as a heretic now and revoking the titles of catholics has always worked well for me. My CA has also never been lowered upon conversion.

It sounds like it is only you who has the bug, maybe due to editing save files, that can get buggy sometimes.

I think its a problem with how empire CA works vs kingdom CA. I edited the save file after the conversion to test some things. The way till the conversion was clean, so it's not that.

I tested this, and I can revoke a Cathar king's title freely when I am catholic.

However, I cannot revoke a catholic king's title freely when I am Cathar. That makes no sense.

Btw, why does the game's checksum change when I edit a savegame? what the heck is going on?

There will be a circumstance when it works and in practically the same situation it will fail the next time for seemingly no good reason (I've had it work and not work with different Catholic kings versus Muslim mayors (neither the lieges nor the vassals were heretics of their respective religions) with the same crown authority in both situations).

Yea, thats what I assumed earlier when my emperor tested the heretic event before that. Couldnt get it to work reliably.

Most likely it's a bug then.

I have no trouble revoking Catholic vassal titles as a Fraticelli. Never had an issue with turning Fraticelli lowering crown authority (granted I turned Fraticelli before I was king). I think your game is bugged. Perhaps do a fresh install. Make sure you put all your saved games elsewhere and completely deleted the game (saves, settings and all) before you reinstall.

Honestly: Make everyone following that religion in your realm pissed at your ruler for doing so. It should only be "free" for your own and other religions.

The only way to test religious conversion that I found was the console. Maybe the legitimate event from the court chaplain doesnt lower CA. But I dunno how to test that.
