Chapter 3 : Introduction - Conversos
Torquemada,in contemplation, several hours before his conversion
"...Islam is a message of peace, and all shall see its glory..."Words of Torquemada to a congregation of Muslims in Salamanca. The war ended completely in 1458 when the last state, Tuscany signed a white peace with the Cordoban Caliphate. The old borders , some 800 years have once again been established. It was as if the fighting which has drained the christian states, called the reconquesta, never came to be.
Hakam, passed away after ensuring peace for his lands, and his son , Sulyaman II, an inefficent dimwit, ruled over the empire. He was named the "apathetic" for his lack of intrest in state affairs.
However, several excellent ministers consolidated the state in this peaceful time.Great projects were admisioned, such as the refiniries of Barcelona and Seville.Shieks and imams were sent to convert the masses, and by 1460, only Leon remained as the last christian baston in the empire.
The Caliphate in the aftermath of the war
Another important figure is Jamal Cortez, or "Hernan Cortez" was born in 1485, at Medillin, a village of Estremadura, Spain. He was born into a christian family but converted to Islam in 1498, he is well known in the books of history for his annexation of Mexico.
These are just examples of "conversos" who contributed to the power of muslim spain.Another important family is the Üskids, formaly known as the floggers, an important muslim Banker family in Cordoba.
Art, caligraphy and Quranic recitation soared throughout Isphania, and the cities of Cordoba were a center of learning in a darkened Europe. The Caliphate has become a considerable power in Western Europe, perhaps the strongest at the time.
In 1486 , the Great diplomatic exchanges between the Spainards and the Cordobans beared fruit when an alliance was striked between both states. It might seem strange to most readers, but the changes in Europe, the rise of France as a power, has crushed the power of the christians of Isphania.By 1491, the Castillians became vassals of the Caliphate.
The Caliphate also began to send ambassadors throughout Europe, trying to form a diplomatic basis with France, and England, in hope that peace can co-exist between all nations.
It is was the begining of the Islamic Golden Age in Iberia, known as the "Age of Gold".Cordoba would discover Mexico by 1492, and the conquest of the Astec lands would begin.
In 1492, a man by the name of Colombus, begged the Calipah to fund an expedition to the West, to find the fabled lands of "Cathay".The Vizier prompeted such an endeavour in hope that the new sea route may help expand trade in face of the Turkish blockade in the east.It was one thing to control the only water channel into the Medditteranian, the Gibraltar strait, but it would be astronomical if the Caliphate controlled the easter markets.
So, Columbus, with a crew of muslim sailors, set out to the West in hope of fortune and expansion, Glory to the Caliphate.
