Reasonable enough review, but I had to laugh at this:

Players will be able to take part of Operation Barbarossa, which was the invasion of Russia.
Really? You mean it wasn't a plan to rid the Reichstag of roaches?

Operation Downfall was the invasion of Japan. Then there is the most famous, D-Day, which we all know was the beginning of the Liberation of Europe from the German regime

*cough* Not to mention the red army *cough* ;)

Anyway, back to more gnashing of teeth while I wait for the game...

Where did this come from?

"Players will be able to take part of Operation Barbarossa, which was the invasion of Russia. Operation Downfall was the invasion of Japan."

The planned invasion of Japan was "Operation Olympic". I don't have the game. Is it really called "downfall" in the game?

Downfall is an ahistorical scenario where there's a massive land invasion of Japan. So we could pretty much call it what we wanted :D

I remember watching a special on it for the history channel. The plan to invade Japan was quite detailed (almost nobody knew of the a-bomb development, Truman was shocked it was kept a secret from him while he was VP under FDR) and expected massive cassualties. Hence why the a-bomb was chosen (They sincerely believed that it would bring peace with the lowest death count out of all their options).

The invasions phases are accurately named in the game (Olympic and then Coronet). The overall invasion was named "Downfall", so its a good thing you wanted to call it what you did :p. Not entirely ahistorical, just what would have happened given if we hadn't developed the bomb intime (which may even happen in the game ;)

I Think Not!!!

One of the biggest improvements is how the combat works. When you attack an enemy there will be a movement line that shows you how long it will take for your army to get there. Once they are there a conflict will ensue.

Directly out of gamezone's review, I think this was a major thing that was CHANGED.......

The planned invasion of Japan was "Operation Olympic". I don't have the game. Is it really called "downfall" in the game?

As Kikaider said, the name for the overall invasion of Japan was Operation Downfall, which was composed of two parts. The first was Operation Olympic, the invasion of southern Kyushu, scheduled for Nov. 1st, 1945, and the second was Operation Coronet, the invasion of Honshu near Tokyo, scheduled for Mar., 1946. Either operation would have been by far the largest amphibious operation in military history, dwarfing the D-Day landings.

One of the things I find most interesting about Operation Olympic is that the Americans significantly underestimated the Japanese forces defending southern Kyushu. The general standard for US amphibious operations was to outnumber the enemy in the landing zones by 3-1, but it reality the Japanese forces would have outnumbered the Americans (and this is without the various militias that would have been supporting the regular army).

Paradox games getting good reviews?

Are you sure it isn't a FPS?

Why does this keep coming up every after every Paradox release? Check the press averages on gamerankings.com.

Eu1/2 got great reviews. CK and HoI got good reviews and IIRC were better received by the press than the forums. The only game that didn't review well was Vicky.

Where does the myth that only FPSes get good reviews come from? Reviews are generally fair based on genre. Strategy games by people other than Sid Meier and other smaller genres get the shaft when it comes to pre-release hype and all, but if anything, I'd say there's a bias in favour of niche games like Paradox's in reviews.
