My bet is that any stolen artifacts would be hidden/sold/melted down/sold off pretty damned quick, I can't think offhand of any wars that resulted in returned artifacts. Hell, the Venetians still hold stuff that they looted from Byzantium in 1204 !

Maybe a CB to "Recover Family Heirlooms" using the "Original Owner" tag as the trigger ?

A slight problem with original owner is that your family might had been the 2nd-21st owner of something, but someone else would be considered the rightful controller. Perhaps an associated dynasty could be attributed to every artifact that's owned by a family for 50+ years. Although it would be slightly annoying to have to launch another war, a CB would be useful so that you can take artifacts back.

Also, one good thing if that it's definitely possible in the game's code to take artifacts in wars - In AGOT, Robb takes a sword from Tywin's treasury.

As well as the family heirlooms casus belli, a King of Lombardy should have a casus belli to take the Iron Crown of Lombardy if he doesn't own it. To be used on the ruler who owns it, or the ruler who is sheltering the courtier who holds it.

I guess that would mean that anyone in possession of the crown would have a weak claim as long as the crown is held?
