Now I myself have been the perpetrator, and victim of, many "offensive retreats". I believe it is a crucial part of the game, and integral to strategy- you must block off possible dangerous escapes of a unit before you attack it.

Now what I want to know, is if this is modeled in the game- as in, can you communicate your intent to do this to both your human and AI allies.

If not, this should be among the first things they fix, though it would be hard, considering that the AIs must be revised to recognize and communicate this, as well.

So if any of you lucky blokes that have the game already could fill us in, we'd all appreciate it, I'm sure!

Well, having played for about two hours, I'm no expert on what the AI can do.

You can tell your allies (AI or otherwise) what you'd like them to do. In the negotiations phase you have the ability to suggest their moves. Whether they agree to do so or not, however, is up to them.

So, no, you cant' communicate your intent; but you can advise the AI how to move.

I believe there will be some shortfalls in communicating with the AI. One example I can come up with is when, sometimes, you need to occupy your ally's SC for the spring turn in order to move ahead in the fall. I"m not sure if any AI ally will go for that.

So no Key Lepanto, then?
I wonder if the "forced Key-Lepanto alliance" I did in the languishdiplomacy game would work against the AI?
(I, as Italy, did the Key Lepanto opening after telling Austria at the last minute, basically forcing us into an alliance. It worked, too!)

You don't get too many human players who agree to that sort of thing either! LOL

Retreats deeper into enemy territory is bs  I just had an Italian Army retreat from Warsaw all the way to St. Petersburg round to sweden then norway then to bloody England. Thats total crap. Shouldnt it be once line of supply is borken to any other Italian province that retreating units are eliminated? I believe that happened to my navy which was cut off and defeated in the Aegean... It was dumb cos each buld phase they were holding a different province making it so I couldnt build a unit to finally block them

If this is how its supposed to be then I won't be playing this game anymore, retreating offensivly rofl what bs

Actually Bumble Bee, that is one of my favourite tricks in the game.

If you have a look at Diplomacy Demo Game number 2 you will see that Turkey (Josephus I) and Italy (me) used this trick to our advantage to trap and destroy an English Fleet while advancing our position.

What happened to your Fleet was probably a NRP (No Retreat Possible).

You may not like it when it happens too you but you will love it when you are the person doing it. :)

It is roughly equivilent to getting a Rook to your opponets back rank in chess. Devastating! :D

From the perspective of someone totally unfamiliar with Diplomacy it seems a bit crappy but now that I know its supposed to do that I can live with it :p

How did an Army retreat to England? There would be an intervening body of water. Since retreats cannot be convoyed, I presume someone convoyed the Italian unit during a movement phase, yes?
