I've experienced this a few times now and it is very annoying.
I will defeat an enemy army and they'll start retreating. The army will take the 'shortest route' to their retreat destination, even if that route means pathing through my forts & neutral faction territory. The army will recover their morale while retreating through my territory & break off their retreat when they've recovered enough, before reaching their retreat destination or even any friendly territory. They army is now deep behind my lines taking territories, in a position that was impossible to reach without breaking a fort.
There's 2 issues;
Retreating armies can path through enemy forts ignoring zone of control.
Retreating armies recover their morale while retreating & can break off their retreat before they reach their retreat destination.
