From playing the DLC I'm not entirely convinced retirement is purely cosmetic. I suppose I should've taken a screenshot, but I've had several people retire suddenly and at least one of them at the ripe old age of 40. They had only been in office for a short while. So ... unless something else happened, it might be that Paradox did put in a chance for people to retire not just as a cosmetic alternative for death.
This should never happen. Leader retirement is just a text swap for "leader died" and it should only trigger when the leader dies out of old age - there should be no events to retire leaders before they "die".
I just had a leader Retire and it feels pretty was big feel-bad. I have been playing Leader-Centric for a while now, well before the DLC. I have always invested heavily into leader lifespan (Venerable, Robust, Harmony Tree, Always Prioritize the Tech), because I loved building strong leaders and hated losing them.

All of a sudden, POOF! Leader gone. No lead-up event, no warning, no "Retirement Age" policy I can see, randomly back-flipped out of the game while giving two middle fingers and saying "See you losers later". He was age 61 (out of 170 base lifespan)! That's less than base death age! (That's 4 trait points and 2 Tradition Tree picks *Totally wasted*)

It is still early, but it makes investing in leaders feel utterly useless? Why put any energy/effort/resources into leaders if they'll just drop out without any of my input? I mean it isn't like a drove his science ship directly into a Leviathan or anything. He was only Level 5!

I was really looking forward to this DLC and it was feeling great... right up until it turns out that working to build leaders isn't even something you can do because of they vanish as soon as they get halfway to the level cap. WHY?
I will kind of repeat myself from above - getting retired at age 61 when you have 170 leader life span on this leader should not be possible. The system should be tied ONLY to natural death cases and then the system randomizes what text to show you. Immortals never retire by this logic.

So, my plea to all readers here ;) If you happen to bump into this issue, please report a bug and provide necessary information (preferable screenshot, save and an autosave before death). This is not how the system is intended to work, leaders should not "retire" before they "die" as this, in term of code, is the same thing. Its only different text shown on the notification or toast.
