It would be nice if paradox adds retire option with leaders, so we can retire old guard lvl. 1 generals if we want to, and allow young promising generals to autopromote faster. It is apsurd to me that generals loose skill when we manually promote them, but paradox will probably stick to that, so a retire option would be nice.

It'd be too easy to abuse it, IMHO, unless there are strict limitations to its use per time period and other penalties to balance it. Plus, one skill point is hardly a monumental loss. On the Russian Front it'd be gained back in weeks, probably.

Does auto-promote take into account generals that are in the pool but not deployed? I thought it only looked at the generals that were deployed..

The auto-promote system is something mysterious which a lot of players (especially new ones!) wouldn't know about, so perhaps it's better to change it alltogether.

Depending on how the chain-of-command system is implemented, there might not even be a need for auto-promote. After all, auto-promote is a great work-around for those who don't want to break up their units into 100+ single-division "corps" formations in HoI2

If things turn out as i hope, we won't have to worry about auto-promote. Because there will be enough openings when you use auto-assign, that the feature will be redundant.

By the way, i think it's unfair to have retirement merely as an option. Guderian and Manstein should be randomly sacked right in the middle of the action.

If they get rid of auto promote, I'd be happy. It is a bit dodgy to have two systems at the same time. I think a single system would be better for promotions

Just turn the auto option off - many ppl will use it. Im sure that there will be some form of it. How would you manage it alone? Imgine having to check all 400 divs to find the best candidate to promote cause you need new Corps leader and those left in the pool arent good enough...

I don't get it; why would you not use auto-promote? The system promotes one of your generals with no penalty. Why is that bad? Are you some how penalised for having a general that is too high of rank? Is there a penalty for having a general with too high skill level? :confused:

My problem is that auto-promote in HoI2 is disconnected from actual needs. I'm enheartened with HoI3 (1)because the new system will employ multiple generals at each level, thus more generals will get more experience, and (2)the tier system will make it easier for the AI to "see" how many generals are needed at each rank-level.

I would like to see the auto-promote structure integrated with a player-plan, so that the player marks which general he or she would rather the AI should promote. Or, maybe allow the player to choose which type of general that he or she would like promoted. Say, choose to have an offensive leader promoted to General, defensive leader to Field Marshal, and commando leader to Lieutenant General.

Players shouldn't have direct control on who gets promoted. Thats not realistic.

I don't think so, when there is a war you need every man. And does it matter if the garrison of island X is commanded by 55 or 60 or 65 year old general.

Stalin also had a mini-purge in the second half of 1941 because many of his generals were failing. It didn't go terribly far though.

Yeah, there are a lot of "retirings" in the dictatorship countries, but this sacking were because of political rather than practical military reasons.

The retire option proposed by the OP isn't a 'practical military' reason either...
Neither is it political of course.

The examples are useless, since no general was indeed ever fired because he was 'an old guard'...

Historical precedence doesn't matter, it's how autopromote works and the uselessness of old guards :)

Go to generals.dk page and check a dozen or so generals from various nations.
But I'm against such option in the game, since it could be easly abbused. I would prefer the deathdates to be back instead.

Yes, that's very true. Lots of generals were retired, quite a lot were recalled to active duty as well.

At the time of the fall of France, French generals retired en masse, and some of those had been recalled from retirment to active duty in 1939.

Never used auto-promote, and I only know about it because of the forum.
I don't see why there isn't some way of "retiring" your generals, though. You can even delete them in Vicky.
