I just bought Legacy of Rome and thought I'd play it to see how the new retinue mechanic works. I decided to play as a count in the Byzantine Empire to see the new Byzantine events, too. After a couple quick failures (Thessalonike: conquered by Fatimids before 1100. Tripoli: conquered by Fatimids before 1100. Bastards followed me!), I had a game I played up through the 1170s (then the frigging emperor decided it was time to revoke my titles one by one, so I ragequit. So far, all I've learned is that the game hates me.) What I noticed is that I could summon levies of about 4500, but couldn't raise any retinues. My Military Organization level in all my provinces was only 1. How are retinues calculated? How many levies should I be able to raise before I can expect to get retinues? How does the MO technology factor in?

It's average military organization tech level times total realm manpower.

So, if your average milorg level is 1, that means 10% of your levies are available to be used as a retinue. So, if you have 5000 total manpower, that gives you 500 retinue points - not enough for any retinue except the pure Light Infantry/Archer ones.

Somehow I don't think my DLC is working... I have a game as Barcelona-->Aragon where I have about 6500 total levies and 1.2 average MO tech but cannot raise a single retinue. Also, my checksum with the DLC is exactly the same as it is without, even though I have the DLC selected when I start with the launcher. Was there something I was supposed to do after installing the DLC?

>>My MO tech in Barcelona is 0.8 or something. Could that be it?

Generally speaking, only big kingdoms like France and empires has sufficient manpower to raise retinues in 1066 start. As duke your options are as limited as in pre-LoR games: levy, merc and allied troops.

I'm the King of Aragon. I have everything except Mallorca, and it's the mid-1100s. Did you miss the parts about "6500 total levies" and "Barcelona --> Aragon"?

>>I confirmed my DLC isn't working. I started up as the Byzantines in 1066: 15k total levies, MO tech 1.28, no available retinues. Also, my checksum is still JQDK, as it is without the DLC. Is there something I have to do to get the thing to work?

If you load up your game and you get into the menu, down at the left are the main DLC (only them, so no portraits ect.) shown which are loaded. If your problem remains, ask in the tech forum.
