I really think retinue commanders should be able to join factions. A lot of mods use retinues to represent standing armies, and it's annoying that they follow you unconditionally when armies often didn't historically. What I would recommend is designating the centre flank commander as the overall commander of a retinue army.

Some flavour could be added to represent the confusion a rebellion causes, such as the right and left commanders arresting the centre commander and taking over the unit, or the centre commander arresting them and appointing his own men. If the left and right flank commanders really like you, they could even fight the centre flank leader with their own men.

I proposed a similar idea half a year ago and I support this. In my opinion, a retinue can be presented as a landless vassal, like Varangian Guard for Byzantium. This will allow to implement this mechanic more easier. I think, it will be much better, if your retinue will not support you mindlessly in any civil war, so you will be compelled to rely more on diplomacy and plots, then on a brute force.

The dynamic mercenary system could actually be used to assign a temporary landless title to retinue armies.

I agree. I've said before that the retinue system should be replaced by something like this in CK3, but if it happened already in CK2 that'd be great.
