I have been watching all the beautiful reddit posts people have been coming up with, and it really makes me wonder why we do not have vanilla features for;

  • retaining walls
  • stairs
  • wide paths
  • landscaping tools
  • sunken roads
A lot of these features could make a lot of the most ugly features of vanilla gameplay so much better. Instead of plopping a city building and getting weird, nearly vertical parking spots, buildings on steeper terrain can bet a retaining wall border to keep key portions of the landscaping flat. I use quay anarchy for a lot of this, but quays are huge. Why not have the exact same mechanic, just with a much smaller/thinner asset? We would also need a way to angle them, so if we wanted a sloping wall we could, but really, I cannot imagine why this is not in-game already.

Stairs can be used as an option for paths to go up steeper slopes too, and could integrate nicely with the retaining walls.

Landscaping tools are already more or less in the game, just use a road tool, but instead of roads plop a line of trees/bushes. Also let us use the tree paint tool while running a city.

Sunken roads are the only bit that would change the existing interface, because we would need a new button to tell the game we either want at tunnel or an open top when we build a below-grade road.

Another nice feature would be an option to change the spacing on supports. This is not so critical, since we can just build individual road segments to get exact spacing, but an option to dynamically set this would make an otherwise tedious job a lot nicer.

Really, why are so many of these features relegated to mods?

Yep, and I do use a lot of mods to cover these shortcomings, It just baffles my mind that such an obvious feature is not in vanilla. Those poor people on console have to go through hell to make a sunken road, and it will never look quite as good since they are stuck using quays, not thin walls.

Even with using mods, a lot of them are not even used by the cims, and are just for looks. Some of the "wide stairs" and "wide paths" are plopables just like rocks, not something you could use to make an actual usable park.
