I have been watching all the beautiful reddit posts people have been coming up with, and it really makes me wonder why we do not have vanilla features for;
Stairs can be used as an option for paths to go up steeper slopes too, and could integrate nicely with the retaining walls.
Landscaping tools are already more or less in the game, just use a road tool, but instead of roads plop a line of trees/bushes. Also let us use the tree paint tool while running a city.
Sunken roads are the only bit that would change the existing interface, because we would need a new button to tell the game we either want at tunnel or an open top when we build a below-grade road.
Another nice feature would be an option to change the spacing on supports. This is not so critical, since we can just build individual road segments to get exact spacing, but an option to dynamically set this would make an otherwise tedious job a lot nicer.
Really, why are so many of these features relegated to mods?
