For Ironman campaigns the game needs to verify the checksum to make sure that the game filed did not get modified (read cheats) before loading the save. This requires the game to be booted. The resume from launcher option lets you load a save file without verifieing the checksum and therefore would allow cheating.

Damn. Isn’t it impossible to cheat in an Ironman anyway?

Yes. Save, tab out, copy save game file, move to a back up folder. Tab back in. Takes 2 seconds. It's literally as quick as manual saving if you have everything open already.

I try to mitigate the impact of that by only having 1 save game at a time. If I make a back up, that's the only back up there is. It helps keep me in line but I wish I could just do pure Ironman. The temptation to re-load when it's so easy to tab out and save is just too hard to resist.

Another way to cheat in Ironman is to crash you game (kill it in the process monitor) if you have a bad event or for another reason. I did it twice in 3000 hours: once I had a bug (after a war, I chosed a dozen of provinces to take and only one became mine), the other occasions I deleted by mistake my fleet of 150 heavy ships...
You can then reopen the game from the last Ironman save (at the start of the month).
