Quick question. I have very large amount of gold but am running out of mana. When I run out, will the deficit be subracted from my gold as it is when you run out of food, or will my summoned units be eliminated?
Thanks

Once your mana income goes negative it takes form your research income. Just like if your food income goes negative it takes from cash. If your cash income is negative it takes from food, mana, and research. I have not been far enough negative to lose enchants or units.

The reverse is true as well. Excess food will turn into gold, excess research (ie not researching) turns into mana.

Actually, you can actively divert spell research into mana by not selecting any spells offered in research screen. Of course, this will make you have to press ENTER to end the turn, since you can not close the notification on spell research without selecting a spell to research.

Personally, I think the dev should give us one more button in spell research window (maybe at the middle of the star), so that when we click at the new button, we automatically convert spell research into mana.

Then, each turn we can get notification about "You have converted our research into mana. Do you want to research a new spell instead?

I've been in the negatives for all 3 main resources and had no real consequence. The only problem was not being able to build any more units or casts spells in the middle of a 2 fronts war, but neither lost the 2 spells I had running on my units, nor I lost any units. I got back up after completing a couple of quests, but that was it. Since I play with Undead, food is of no consequence, even for units that use it (which is something already addressed on another thread, and I hope the devs work on fast, for balance issues). The way surplus is turned into another is sometimes annoying (I don't want my mana/turn to become negative in order to research spells, specially at the beggining of the game, when I need the mana for the couple of spells I already have...). :)
