But you, as Byzantium, have annexed Rome, right? That doesn't necessarily mean there's no Pope. Sometimes the Pope pops (popes?) up in another Catholic theocracy. Other times, he is annexed outright, and there's no Papal States. The Catholic Church doesn't collapse, and he's just sitting somewhere, pontificating. Still lets him call Crusades, though.
 
This is bugged, the Pentarchy mission is required to disable the curia, if you just get the triggered modifier then the curia remains.

Him calling crusade every two months isn't suposed to be possible

If you annex Rome, is there any easy way to find out where the Pope ends up?
