Respectfully disagree is not a downvote

I keep seeing people talk about being "downvoted", so I feel like this has to be said out loud. If seventy people respectfully disagree, you aren't being downvoted. It means seventy people did not agree with you. Now, whether they disagree with a tiny part of your comment or an entire discussion, well, that's a limitation of that button. This forum does not have "karma", there are no rewards. If people disagree with you, it means they disagree with you.

Equating disagreement to downvotes, or agreement to upvotes, is a barrier to productive discussion.

Sort of reminds me of twitter verification. Started off as just a means of being actually who you say you are. Now? Not so much. I hit disagree because it'd be funny

All that being said, I do partially agree with your last point. What gets me is if a person disagrees and then doesn't bother to mention what they disagree about. It's not exactly helpful.

I know, but try telling them that Wiz is going to Stellaris 2 and not Vici 3 and everybody loses their mind.

@Mavkiel - I agree, and I think many people share your sense of humor But I do think, often, and especially if you have a significant number of disagrees, this is a forum where people will discuss things with you.

Usually you'll get some kind of feedback, even if it isn't proportional.

It wasn't always called 'respectfully disagree' though. I don't remember anymore when, but it was renamed at some point. (Before you could also see a list of people wo agreed / disagreed)
So at least some of the more "ancient" forum users might still use it simply to tell you: "No."

You can still do that in the Ratings Received tab of your profile.

Respectfully disagree was just disagree before then. Not sure it ever was anything else ^^;

I respectfully disagree with you because I saw a plenty of times that there were respectfull disagreements for asking questions. Aparently some people confuse that with thumbs down emote.

What gets me is if a person disagrees and then doesn't bother to mention what they disagree about. It's not exactly helpful.

Disagree, but in this case I'm going to risk a performative contradiction and tell you why. Just clicking the button expresses a view without having to take up forum real estate with a reply that just says 'I don't agree'. It's also less confrontational and gives people a way to express an opinion in a way they might be more comfortable with. It also serves as a rough way to quantify the opinions of forum goers. It comes down to the issue of the thread - don't take a disagree personally.

Surely it's often entirely reasonable to disagree with a question? Why do people think it's unreasonable to disagree with a question? Do people not understand that questions have premises with which it's possible to disagree? Did you notice that I phrased my entire response to you as a series of questions so that you can't respectfully disagree with me without implicitly acknowledging the reasonableness of my argument?

It was just renamed from regular "disagree".

I have trouble seeing the difference between simply disagreeing and "respectfully disagreeing" other than an attempt by the forum to remind you that it might not be because everybody hates you or something.

On the one hand it might be lazy if nobody explains why they disagree but sometimes there's already a couple people who've stated it which would make repeating it redundant.

I guess people don't like knowing others don't agree with what they are saying but it's not like there's any punishment/consequences from it.
