HOIFix Saved My Sanity

Thanks SirReal for HOIFix! I started HOI with no probs, but over time ran into CTD's and lockups. After following all of the proper uninstall directions, reinstall directions, and recommendedations on "Read this before posting", I had a CTD last night right after an important save. It got worse, the save wouldn't load - hung up on "reading scenario"

I was devastated and frustrated. Downloaded HOIFix this morning and my save game was fixed and so far all signs point to smooth playing!

I might have been spoiled, it working on my first time and so on, but thank you for your time and effort.

(BTW, just realized this reads like an infomercial testimonial - I am sincere in my thanks! I'm also available for paid endorsements:)

Greeting SirReal,

I read your fix instructions with great interest and went home to apply it. Unfortunately I am a self confessed computer 'Numpty' (Australian slang for woefully inadequate at indicated task). When I applied the path for gaining entry to the file it keeps coming back with "too many parameters - files". The command path is C:\Program Files\Strategy first\Hearts of Iron\mod-CORE\scenarios\save games This is obviously something to do with the gap in the initial string 'Program files' but I have no idea how to make it read the path and thereby gain entry to the next step. Any help/advice would be appreciated. In anticipation of your response.

Hmmm... Normally spaces shouldn't pose problems in DOS. My HOI game is installed in C:\Games, but I suppose for most ppl it's in C:\Program Files.
It should work... SirReal?

problem could be one or combination of following:

1. DOS only looks at 1st 7 letters of pathname [the old 8 bit limit in effect] ... so program files is longer than 7 ... so you usually see

c:\Progra~

where DOS can't go too far. As long as you do not have another dir name that has the 1st 7 letters the same, you're ok.

2. DOS cannot read meta chars in name, so the "-" symbol in the path is invalid in DOS.

3. DOS can only go 5 [IIRC] levels, and you are 6.

Just my thougths ...

Ok should be easy then... Move your save game from the CORE directory to the main HOI save directory and edit it there. Then put it back. Easy

It will still choke on the events section at the end of the save game as it can't handle the line length. Just remove those lines (the program will tell you) and it will run ok, you can then reinsert them in the fixed save.

Vulture: for your reference I've seen the control character problem on maybe 4 out of 100+ save games checked. Low probability, high impact.

Get the latest [2003-10-08] HOIFIX. The input buffer is 256k, expanded from 4k. If it chokes on that, well, I guess I can up the input buffer to 512MB, but I'd like to keep the fix program within the minimum requirements for HoI itself... ;)

As to problems with the paths; please check the README file again. I recommend moving the HOIFIX.EXE file into the save games directory to eliminate some of these problems.

Hm. Come to think of it, I think I'll just add capability to HOIFIX so it asks for a filename to fix if none is given. That'll eliminate the command prompt / change directory procedure, and users can just copy it with explorer and then double-click it to start.

Said and done; the current version will ask for the file to fix if started without arguments. The README has been modified to reflect the new usage.

Same thing here.
I was getting desperate at the outskirts of Stalingrad... Perhaps that's what was lingering in Paulus thoughts... then again... perhaps NOT!
Anyhow, two different saved files (plus the autosave) were corrupt and wouldn't load. The problem was solved by "merging two lines" and "replacing three blank characters"... It worked...

Thanks for a great tool!
