This is something I just noticed the other day, which has probably been mentioned before but still....
In my China AAR (which is here) I've been dealing with Southeast Asia by conquering, then creating smaller, more compliant vassals all over the place.
Thing is, if a country ceases to exist then you release it as a vassal, they get your tech! As I've been playing with the super-innovative, Muslim tech group China that results from the right choice after the Zheng He event, I'm at a par with Europe, and so are the tiny countries I've been releasing.
This is interesting to me because one of my strategic goals was to keep Europe from bothering me. Originally the plan was just to conquer a huge, high-tech empire that would keep Europe from getting a foothold, but now I'm thinking it's better to release as vassals a whole bunch of smaller nations with duplicated land tech 20 and naval tech 15. Sort of like Belgiums for south-east Asia. Champa, Assam, Khmer, even Korea are all one province minors, but not in a bad position to slow or even stop European aggression now.
Now I'm pondering releasing Xhosa -- having colonized South Africa -- as a useful ally around Cape Horn. Xhosa "tribesmen" with rifles and galleons, anyone?
Cheers,
Paul Drye
