This is something I just noticed the other day, which has probably been mentioned before but still....

In my China AAR (which is here) I've been dealing with Southeast Asia by conquering, then creating smaller, more compliant vassals all over the place.

Thing is, if a country ceases to exist then you release it as a vassal, they get your tech! As I've been playing with the super-innovative, Muslim tech group China that results from the right choice after the Zheng He event, I'm at a par with Europe, and so are the tiny countries I've been releasing.

This is interesting to me because one of my strategic goals was to keep Europe from bothering me. Originally the plan was just to conquer a huge, high-tech empire that would keep Europe from getting a foothold, but now I'm thinking it's better to release as vassals a whole bunch of smaller nations with duplicated land tech 20 and naval tech 15. Sort of like Belgiums for south-east Asia. Champa, Assam, Khmer, even Korea are all one province minors, but not in a bad position to slow or even stop European aggression now.

Now I'm pondering releasing Xhosa -- having colonized South Africa -- as a useful ally around Cape Horn. Xhosa "tribesmen" with rifles and galleons, anyone?

Cheers,
Paul Drye

Actually I don't think you're in the Muslim tech group, you're in your own created specifically for China, multiplier 1.3 I believe.

Anyway, to the topic, I think releasing those nations as vassals is an interesting idea. I might wait a bit longer though, till land tech 26. That's a significantly better tech level to be stuck at for the rest of the game than 20.

What choice is that?

I have played China many times. A really great GC!

But I learned really quick that the key to success was to keep SE Asia as vassal states and not annex them outright. The BB hit was onething. But stability can be tricky with China. And each time I had a stablility drop, all of SE Asia revolted.

So Vassals are definetly the way to go...but watch out!...some will decide to end their vassalship and then it's no quarter...he he. :D

The "C" option in the Zheng He event moves China from the "Chinese" to the Muslim tech group. It's the Outward Expansion event.

Also if a country revolts, they have the tech of the country
they revolted from.

This was immensely useful in one Byzantine game, where Moldovia,
and Wallachia revolted from Austria, which at the time had the
best tech of them all. Suddenly, I was getting a very nice
neighbor bonus in the Orthodox tech group...

If I'm reading you correctly, you were neighbouring Austria before Wallachia and Moldovia revolted from Austria. Didn't you get a neighbor bonus then too?

Neighbor bonus is improperly titled. It should be called 'tech group bonus.' Does that clarify things?

Then what do you get the bonus for? It doesn't change your Byzantine Orthodox tech group if two neighbouring provinces break away from Austria, does it?

When you create a vassal from your territory, or somebody declares independence, they get the same tech as the former mother country. Since those countries that broke away are Orthodox, they benefit the Orthodox brethren.

Good luck finding what you need in the manual :)
The manual does not give you half the info you need to play.

To further clarify things:

You get a "neighbor" bonus if anyone in your tech group has a higher tech than you in a certain technology.

I'd actually always wondered, is the size of the neighbor bonus dependent on how FAR the leader of your tech group is ahead of you in the tech in question?

Yes. If they're only one tech level ahead you get a small bonus. If it's more, you get a larger bonus.
