So far we've only seen researches done in the year they're suppose to.

Other than the obvious technological gain from researching a tech ahead of its time.

Is there any point in doing so given the limited slots available for research and the increased research time to do it?

There are national focuses you can activate, which shorthen the ahead of time penalty for some techs.
As for the rest, I don't think we can tell if it's worth it or not, but the penalty for it seems pretty high.(200% per year)

A benefit that may not be as obvious is production efficiency. Say the panzer 4 is a 1941 medium tank and you research it in 1939. At that point you shift your tank production to panzer 4s. There is the obvious gain of having a stronger tank than your enemies, but there is the less obvious advantage that now you may be building the same tank for 4 years instead of 2. Allowing you to also maintain your production efficiency and build more tanks.

That's another advantage I'd never thought of.

In HOI3, in my eyes, it really depended on the tech. If you really want or need a tech, it may be worth it to research it early even though it'll go slowly.

The most obvious example would be nuclear weapons. You could easily get "the bomb" in 1944 if you just beelined it from day one, optionally also researching atomic theory techs ;) .

Edit: the production efficiency argument is really good, too.

There is some national focuses that seems to remove all ahead penalty for certain techs. Like Germany get some that help them research their tanks ahead in time without penalty.
