A saved file i found in a mp game of a guy getting 2k research, ignoring the upkeep cost of research
upload_2018-12-15_17-50-53.png

Penalty for low stability was mainly from lack of amenities, at 1%
upload_2018-12-15_17-52-3.png

Being below 0 on upkeep doesn't reduce research

A shortage of consumer goods hits research and you are not negative on that. A shortage of food will tank happiness and lower research.

All of that crime will catch up with you too, not to mention the fact that those penalties make you a sitting duck in a war.

Lack of minerals not cutting research sounds like an oversight for Hive Minds specifically. Does the same thing hold true for no Consumer Goods in a regular empire? I certainly hope not. I'd post this over in the Bug Reports forum

And 49% isn't low stability, it's pretty average. 50% is normal after all. Truly low would be like 20% or less.

Hivemind doesn't use consumer goods.

nah, he could just disable the research labs and play normally when he doesnt need to do so.

He doesn't have enough stockpile, station and shipyard to be able to recover from been rushed from what I can see, his defense is paper for the year. Deactivating will only give him mineral and power back.

Right, so this *particular* exploiter wasn't too bright. Also looks like he's at war with someone. However, put this in the hands of someone mildly competent, and providing they don't get rushed in the first 20 years, will have a huge tech lead when it comes time to turn all the research labs into foundries and start expanding.

@redharo please post this on the bug report forums.

Apparently, alloy fabricator works even if you dont pay the energy upkeep

And yes, He actually has planets full of alloys and special resource generators,

I guess he just sells the special resources when he is at war to temporarily power his ships during battle

You know, I can actually see that as a valid strategy. Insanely risky and likely to blow up in your face, but if you can manage it I'd say it's valid. Only problem is the research not getting cut in half, but as said before that's probably a bug/oversight and likely to get fixed soon.
