So I've played a few games and a couple I have expanded really quickly.

But I've noticed too that the more I get the slower I get. Taking some 220 months to research certain things that aren't really too special.

So what's the fine balance between research and expansion.

I know about the researchers with the spark of genius and all

I always try to have around 100 in all research for 2300 and 250 in 2350 etc.
Remember to do science only planets with assist research and observatory starbase module
In my opinion, if you take more than 45 month for regular research, it's not good.

You really have to focus on increasing your research output, you need to get all the modifiers you can to boost it. Finish the tradition for Discovery as it will give you a 10 percent boost. Build a lot of research buildings and take advantage of the tiles and upgrade all of your research buildings to max. I have probably over 100 planets and I still manage to have 200 months as the max for repeatable research chains since I have already researched everything. Research debris from fleets you have destroyed during wars or just in skirmishes. It is still possible to have enough research output to keep up with tech. I have over 2500 pops and as I stated above the max for me is probably 200 months to research something, but it is normally lower for me at least. Modify your species that give them boosts in research output and use the synthetics (Which have a +20 percent in research output for tiles). You have to find a way to make everything in your empire efficient to the smallest degree, it will take a lot of micromanaging a a lot of time, but it is possible.
