Good morning/afternoon/evening/night everyone,

I'm new to the paradox forums, and somewhat new to HOI3 in general (I have a few months of experience, but I'm still learning new things and what not)

Anyway, in my current campaign I'm playing as France. It's currently 1943, and I think my research is going fairly well. I currently have Light Armour, Medium Armour, AT, Art, Inf, most of the industry tab, and most land doctrines up to date. As well I also have Marines, Mountain Inf, all equip types (except air and arctic), SP-Art, Mot and Mec researched. But, due to limited leadership I'm unable to keep my navy or airforce up to date, with most of those techs being unresearched, at a 1918 level, or at a 1938 level. Now I get that leadership is limited, but I was curious how other countries were doing research wise so I tag switched to Italy. I found that they had most of their techs up to date, way more than I had, but had only a little more leadership, 2 points(ish). So I tag switched to the USA, they had EVERYTHING up to date minus theory techs and a few air doctrine and naval doctrines. Yes, I know that US leadership is OP, but when I play as the USA I can't do anything even close to that amount of research.

So, anyway my question, does the AI get some sort of "advantage" in research, like speed or efficiency? Am I doing something wrong? Not seeing something? And if they do, is there a way for me to get that "bonus" ;) as well?

Thanks :)

Your production can play a big part in it. For example, ART tech goes off artillery practical (how much of it you've produced) and theory (how much artillery tech you've researched). If you haven't built much artillery, it'll take much longer to research.

Meanwhile there's doctrine tech that's wildly expensive if you've got no war experience. Hover over the modifiers and try to work out what's putting you behind.

Can you leave the AI to figure out the best research to do, or does it have to be manual to be any good? Especially for the larger nations I find it hard to keep track of all the research.

Are you researching ahead of time?

Even 1 year ahead of time gives a big penalty to research, but the UI only warns against researching 2 or more years ahead.

Researching one year ahead gives a penalty?? I never knew that. That might be why I'm lagging behind so much, as I always research 1944 techs in 43 and so on. Thanks for the info.

It might be my lack of experience in doctrines then. I produce enough of every thing else that I research, but in the early game I guess my mass doctrine research probably slowed me down.

Can you leave the AI to figure out the best research to do, or does it have to be manual to be any good? Especially for the larger nations I find it hard to keep track of all the research.

I've never tried using the AI to do research, as I'm worried they'd research techs that I don't need/want, like bomber techs as I don't usually use them.

One thing you can do is edit the script files to tell the AI what techs to prioritize and which to ignore. They are in \tfh\script\country\(country name here). Make sure you set them back to their defaults if you play another country or the AI might not research the tech it needs for what it plans to build.

Generally, as a small major you have to choose. You are going full land, so you will need at least 25 leadership points to go with navy and airforce too. Or very good research efficiency.
As commented above, research 1 year early give penalty, so better avoid it if you don't need it.
With two points of leadership you can have up to date airforce. So there'saa big difference. As France or any other major, special effects, like Mogadishu strait are vital, or sued channel. They will give you 10% leadership, which is around 2 points for you. Don't hesitate to declare war and blitz minors to achieve this.

ai has set what technologies to research and generally doesnt research ahead of time (unless it has nothing more to research) thing is, research is very well balanced after several years of development. ai is just better at research if you program it to be. also "only 2 more leadership" means they can research 6 more tech per year than you. also, you as france should have way more leadership, manpower and IC, but you get very heavy malus due to "overseas" provinces. so basically every province not directly connected with your homeland is producing only 10% leadership and manpower and 50 or 25% of IC. resources are too limited i think.

you can try minmaxing if you want.
