Noticed that these arent talked about a lot and really have little face time in the game. As you cant really plan around the research like in HOI etc.

basically, what is the research streams you should be going for? is it a good idea to first research along the base line and then specialise. and is their any specific time that it takes to complete research or is it just like a die roll?

For civil improvements, do they give you any additional benefits outside of those listed? like for instance, ive heard that the Court of Justice helps stop Smugglers rings and thieves guilds. So do churches improve conversion rates or improve public stablility?

There is no set way or best practice when it comes to tech. A few things worth mentioning though. When playing as a vassal and trying to expand while under a liege, siege times are important, so Siege tech is usually a good one to research first.

Also if you are small and poor, as soon as you can get access to mines and glass-works, the better, as those improvements gives 1 gold/month (not 1 gold/year like the tool tip says).

I prefer to also research Thought line as it gives access to schools.

But eventually most of the tech will spread to your realm, so if your neighbour has level 4in a tech and you have level 1, there is no real need to research that, as it will most likely spread to you faster than you can research it.

Research is somewhat random, so you can set it to research Siege tech 1 for a decade with nothing to show for it, then you switch to Infantry and get two levels in a year.

As for province improvements, some of the buildings do have triggers or MTTH modifiers for events, but I don't think there is a complete list of them, as I think there are too many. The same goes for tech that has no obvious effects. They effect events.

Churches do help with religious conversion in a province ... but if I remember correctly, it hampers cultural conversion. Schools help with research, and moneylenders cost monthly piety.

One fun, absolutely non-efficient, way to research is to switch it up with every ruler and try to pick areas that you think said ruler would be focusing on based on his stats and traits.

I like to research siege tech and then bows because archers are the only unit type that attack during every phase of battle, though to be honest I think the differences from tech to military are so miniscule it doesn't matter. I try to get all the tech I need to make buildings that increase province wealth first (like mines) , then techs that directly increase province wealth second (like farms.) And for the culture techs or whatever I try to get the ones that increase peasant and burgher loyalty so I can increase taxes and tolls more and more.
