Requirements question

I was jsut abotu to preorder this game when I suddenly realized would my Mac be able to handle it. I have MacbookAir 2012 4GB rams and Intel HD Graphics 4000 384 MB. Does anyone have idea would it run or not? Thanks ahead for all the help.

Let me put it this way - You're basically at the top of the Mac foodchain for the most part. Apple are very fond of using Intel's onboard chips for graphics, and they aren't awfully fast. And you've got the biggest one around of those.

You probably won't get stellar performance, but it should run.

My reading suggests no. This in particular is listed as a requirement:

ATI Radeon HD 6750 / NVIDIA GeForce 320 / NVIDIA GeForce 9600 or higher, 1024MB graphics memory required

Now, my thought would be that all of those discrete cards are better than the Intel integrated on an architecture level, though I am not sure. However, the size alone rules out your graphics card (384MB vs 1024MB)

EU4 has the same system requirements as CK2 so I'd have thought if you can play that on your laptop then it should run ok.

Obviously this isn't valid if you don't own CK2

The Intel HD 4000 should be on par with a something like a Nvidia GeForce GT330M.

Sadly I don't own CK2 and it would seem quite a waste to buy CK2 off steam and installing it just to see if it works. Especially since I'd get free copy of the game just by preordering EUIV. Too bad there is no demos for CK2 or EUIV out there.

You could try 'system requirements lab' it matches your system specs against the game requirements. You will need java. (I would link it but don't know if outside links are allowed)

Hey, same doubt here - however I'm on a 2011 MacBook Air (1.8 GHz i7, 4 GB RAM), so I have an Intel HD 3000.
I was asking the same on the CKII forums but didn't get replies - it'd be cool to know if both CKII and EUIV would run fine on my machine (even with flat-map mods, I wouldn't mind that at all) before splashing the cash on the pre-order with which I'd get both =)

I use a mac sometimes too and CK2 runs fine. Mine is a bit weaker than yours, so you should be fine. It might slow down a bit on max speed and some mods may have trouble, but it should still work.

You're correct, of course. I was not thinking about the fact that integrated chips draw from shared system RAM and just read his memory spec as if it were a discrete chipset. Though you probably could have reminded me of that out without the condescension.

Illanair's point conceded, it's difficult to compare integrated with discrete. However, this hierarchy from Tom's Hardware gives a reasonable estimate:

And from that and the minimum Mac requirements for EU4, it looks like the HD 4000 is not at all the same level of performance tier as those specified as minimum requirements. That does not mean it will not run, but it's not a good sign. Though Boozehammer's first-hand test that it is "good enough" is much better news ...

That has been the general consensus so far - If it runs CK2 fairly smooth, EU4 shouldn't be a problem. The engine hasn't changed drastically.

Thanks for all the help. I do have my brothers old PC (well, not that old, my brother is a computer hag) in the closet that I just need to start using for gaming. And I thought my gaming days were all in the past. Damn you PI. And now to make some room...

Macs are made for everything else than gaming. For me that means studying, music and media. Macs are for us old geezers who just want to lay back and take it easy. Windows were always something that brought "murder in my mind".

Hopefully Apple will pick up on the fact that OSX can be used for games eventually, and start adding actual graphics cards as options for their cheaper models.

Back in ye' olde' days, OS7 and Dos were actually on par hardwarewise. Many childhood memories from those days as a Mac'er :wub:
