Like in M total war II

sometimes the Pope will call a Crusade on his own initiative, but he is also open to suggestion from the Catholic Faction Leaders.A Crusade is an incredibly serious event, and not something that the Pope will approve lightly. some times we wait forever before a Crusade is called but should have a option to ask the pope. I love this game but as iv said before the pope really has no power or wrath to weild like in Total war II
The pope needs some work done to it not saying make him someone u can play but the pope need a facelift . In real history popes had alot of power some even had children some bought themselves into becoming the pope. the pope is just a puppet in ths game he really does not do anything, we have no papal election the game just picks someone as pope, no idea when a Crusade will be called some times soon some time a real long long time. even tho you said we wont be able to play the pope does not mean we have to leave it in the state that its in.

Pope John XII (955–963) was said to have turned the Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano into a brothel

Pope John XVII (1003) was married before his election as Pope and had three sons, who all became priests

Pope Clement IV (1265–1268) was married, before taking holy orders, and had two daughters

Most of the examples you've cited of Papal oddities were mostly eliminated with the Gregorian reforms, instituted by Pope Gregory VII, who was Pope during the game's inaugural era.

However, I do like the idea of requesting crusade, but I would prefer it by event chain and not through decision or diplomacy. Otherwise it just gives the players more tools to expand rapidly and reduces the game's challenge.

How can requesting a crusade be done by event? Either you want to request a crusade or you don't. If you do you won't sit around hoping events lead you to your goal, you will take the initiative and dispatch an embassy to the pope to make your case. Maybe the journey of the embassy can be fraught with peril and open to events, but still, as king you would have no control over events, that's why you put your most trusted man at the head of the envoy. Or perhaps to get +50boost you can head off yourself, appointing a regent for your lands while you travel to Rome, or Avignon.

Either way, it may be exploitable by a human player but let's keep it realistic, a random event chain to get you to request a crusade is worse.

I think it should be an intrigue screen option.(like the buy indulgences and Repent sins)

It should be like asking for an Invasion CB but with some Higher Requirements. (minimum Prestige and Piety) then success or failure are your characters problem.

What about an event for "requesting a crusade" is triggered when you are fighting a holy war.

For instance I am France, I am fighting a holy war for Jerusalem, while fighting the Pope notices this and he rally's entire Christendom to its cause, transforming your Holy War into a full on Crusade.

It should be more realistic. You, as a King and higher, see that Iberia, Holy Land, Byzantine or any catholic land is overwhelmed by muslims, then you can go to start a plot for Crusade. So like offensive Crusades can be called only by a Pope, but defensive (take lands back to christians) can be plotted by a ruler of a kingdom or empire.
Why a plot, but not the same as Invasion? Just to get some event before launching a Crusade, which could also fail a plot. Backers will be your vassals, all catholic independent rulers and vassals of Pope.

nah. that could make you lsoe your hoyl war or target stupid realms(hey look cristianity, crusade for ireland because we have a single muslim count there!).

what would be better is giving a leader a piety, presitege and church opinion bonus for say 3 years after winning a offensive holy war, and while you have that modifier you can petition to the pope for a crusade, after which an event chain starts where you need to get support in the church, form the pope and maybe a few diffrent rulers in europe. costs you a hefty amount of gold, prestige and piety in worst cases, and in good cases(pope wants a crusade, and so do a couple of strong people) you get a free crusade.

EDIT: the nah was to ravenous

There's one scenario I'd like this as an option. Where you're the King where some of your lands are held by non-Christians. Like Aragon or Jerusalem in the 1099 start. A King calling on the Pope to help him reclaim HIS land is far less broken than just randomly asking if he can go nab some other Kingdom. This'd be particularily useful with how the Crusade mechanics work. As long as the Kingdom title is held, the holder gets all gained lands.

For that matter, wasn't the first crusade in part a response to an appeal from the Byzantine Emperor for help vs the Turks?

I'd say a Crusade should have an increased chance of happening if:
1. There is no present Crusade
2. Independant catholic power is fighting a defensive Holy War/Jihad
3. A smaller chance if an independant Christian ruler is fighting an offensive holy war, or if an orthodox ruler is fighting a defensive holy war, if either is losing

If those criteria are met anywhere in Christendom and you are the Papal controller, you should have the option of requesting a crusade in the effective area. If they are met in the same de jure kingdom as a title of yours, you should be able to request one for that kingdom.
