I think that being able to rename in-game characters such as advisers, diplomats, merchants, missionaries, colonists would be great especially for role-play reasons.
Example: Let's say you want to make an AAR telling the story of a family of famous merchants of your nation.
You really can't do that since the name(s) never change and you are stuck for 377 years with the same merchants you get on start-up.
If you could rename those starting merchants, then you could easily make a story (the time you rename a character the old one is presumed dead and so on...)
I believe that it is something that won't affect the game mechanics (since every character has its own ID and the game may "read" only the ID and not the character's name).
THANX for listening...

Don't worry, this will be released as a $15 DLC in late 2015.

Company names instead of diplomats and missionaries?
I think you miss the whole point of this request...

EU4 isn't about individual people, it's about countries. I think you correctly point out that immortal diplomats and merchants is a bit silly, but those mechanics shouldn't have been represented by individual people in the first place.

On the other hand, I think it would be much more interesting if they went the other way.

You could have a pool of individuals (in a typical kingdom, your sons, nephews, maybe influential dukes and their families, etc, while in merchant republic it'd be different, etc) and you'd be like, well this one guy speaks their language and can be sent out, but it'll add prestige to his family who is already the most influential family in my kingdom and a potential pretender uprising... on the other hand maybe his diplomatic mission will fail and they'll lose prestige, but then again I do want this war to end.... maybe i can risk sending the my nephew who is more likely to mess up the negotiations or return with a less favorable peace, but at least it'll make my family look better... although maybe i should switch families, a pretender uprising could be good right now...

And then the rules and considerations would be different in a republic. like "i want to re-elect this guy and the opposition faction will put in a guy with worse stats..."

The size of the pool could expand or contract like advisor pool, but it'd be a bit more like the CK2 method of "you can appoint councilors from anyone in your court." But even task would have to be handled by someone in your court; working as a merchant, sending out peace proposals, leading armies, etc.

Thus we wouldn't have to have silliness like "oh you only have 2 diplomats right now so you can't end a war because they're both "busy"." And of course republics would probably have more meritocratic systems where more and better advisors were available; there'd be heretic and foreign advisors that could be better but could cause problems, etc.

Diplomats skill:
-emissary better chance for a treaty
-ambassador better increase of relation
-spy better chance for covert operation
and so on

This is almost getting to be a cookie-cutter reply, but Paradox won't obscure the line between CK2 and EU4 mechanics, because they won't do twice the work for half the profit. It would be amazing if PDS had a billionaire sugar daddy so they could do it and to hell with business, but they don't.
