REQUEST: Character names

I was wondering if it would be possible to name characters when they are born. This would be an awesome addition to the series.

Also how are naming conventions going to be done? Are they going to be tied to the nation like in EU3 or tied to the characters ethnicity? Personally if you can't name your people I think it would be great to have names come from the characters.

If the Romans conquored Egypt, and started marrying egyptian women into their families it wouldnt be surprising to have a man named Ramses as the Emperor or Rome - or the very least as a console

No, that would be all wrong, I think. I hope they implement some kind of genuine Roman name conventions.

The only possible choice could be the ability to choose your character's praenomen - Titus, Caius, Appius, or Marcus, etc.

While it would be fun, it's absolutely necessary to have an option to generate a random realistic name which the Ai would presumably use, so I don't have to come up with a name for every last character. Otherwise, I'd be playing Egypt and my royal family would be something like Ptolemy XXI, Cleopatra XXX, Ramses XVII, Tutankhamun IX, Ramses XVIII, Ptolemy XXII...

It'd be awesome if EU:Rome can use the name system in RTW.
like the character develops a nickname over time, like "the builder" "the attacker" "the cunning" or "victor"

That was a little diffrent from their naming conventions, although "of such and such" would be awesome.

I guess I should add somewhere that for the "name your own kids" thought, that the game should name them, and give you the option to change them that way you didn't get like 100 Ramses throughout the game.

like Scipio who adopted the name Africanus to celebrate his conquest.

Perhaps it should be similar to (though definitely not identical) to naming cities in Civilization. Whenever you founded a new city, the AI automatically suggested a name for the city, which you could either accept, or alter into anything you wanted.

Ofcourse the biggest difference would be in EU:R you can have multiple people with the same name (whereas in CIV you could not have 2 cities with the same name).

I see a problem: regnal names in Egypt were different from Seleucia, yet the rulers belonged to the same ethnic background.

like Gaius Julius Caesar...all male in the Caesar branch of Julian family were called Gaius, all females were Julia LOL...

Back in those days they differ people wiht same names by giving their different nicknames.

That's how they differ the Eastern kings as well. Ptolemy kings for example.

The number behind the name Ptolemy is actually a modern invention.

In Rome, weren't basically all the daughters given the feminine form of their father's name? So Julians would all name their daughters Julia, Claudians would be Claudia, etc. If they had multiple daughters, it would be Julia prima, Julia secunda, Julia tertia...

For example, the first born son in the Cornelii Scipiones was traditionally Publius. That doesnt mean there werent many different others. What needs to happen is a list of various Roman "first names" or praenomen, followed by correct cognomen and gens pairs, like "Ivlivs Ivluvs", Ivlivs Caesar, Ivlivs Mento", etc.

This would be a great addition, I just hope if they do this, it will be for all the nations represented in the game, be it a Galic tribe, or Carthage, Numidians, Baktria and so on.
