Republics at release date

So there are no playable republics at release i know.

But has it been said if there are actually no republics at all or just not playable?
Or is Venice suddenly ruled by a king(/duke)?

Republics will be in the game, just not playable. I don't believe that Paradox has said how republics will work/function at release.

I guess they will work as in the base game of CK2. Thus getting a random ruler every time the old one dies.
