I know that the Republics in game are a nightmare to work with from a coding stand point but I think this should be fairly easy to implement.

I suggest that republics should have term lengths as varieties of the republican succession law to choose from.

I propose the following options:
Lifetime appointment (generic)
20 year appointment
10 year appointment
5 year appointment
4 year appointment
1 year appointment (greeks and italians only?)

Upon death or after the specified amount of years an event will fire that will check who is the current heir of the republic. If it's the dynasty of the current doge than all election funds are taken and the current doge gets a reelection event that restarts the timer and gives the doge prestige based on the term length (50 for 1 year to 1000 for 20 years). If the game checks and a competing dynasty is the next heir of the republic than an event fires causing the current doge to abdicate.

A simple clean up event could restart the timer upon every inheritance to make sure the timer is always running.

Changing the succession laws would probably require positive opinion from all the families to do and would reset the succession timer.

Seems simple enough right? And it could add more chance for republics to change leader with a small prestige incentive for players to choose shorter appointments.
