Republic of Wessex- An AAR of Failure

Well here I go. My first AAR and I chose one of the nerfed republics. I'll be creating a republic of Wessex starting Sept. 15, 1066.
Now, my first post won't actually be posted yet, as I haven't done any playing, but wish me luck. The title explains what's going to happen. This is only my 2nd time to play as a republic, and the first time I cheated, so... my first legitimate play through . Feel free to give me tips.
One more thing, how do I upload screenshots from Steam?

King Harold was broken, and so was his army. The Battle of Stamford bridge was an absolute route. Despite this failure, there was one hero among the masses. The mayor of Southampton had fought valiantly and only withdrew when everyone else was gone.


The king also knew there was no way to return to Middlesex to raise a new army. William, Duke of the Normans, had taken care of that. He was besieging the last castle in the province when Harold learned the news.


Defeated, he thought of a way to prevent the invaders from taking their full prize. He granted his lands in Devon, Somerset, Wessex, and Dorset to the loyal mayor of Southampton. He granted the mayor the titles of Duke of Wessex and of Cornwall. The Republic of Wessex was born.

Also, I gave Harold some extra money so he could create the titles, but that is the ONLY cheat I shall commit myself to.

The king never could remember my name. I am Grand Mayor Eadred I of Wessex and Cornwall, Lord Mayor of Wessex, Dorset, Somerset, and Devon.

While the war was waging, we merchants built our empires. I got a wife, Vivili Hermignes, a fair Portuguese lady.

I needed men to council me. I called forth the best men in the republic.

Despite the republic's attempts to remain neutral in the face of war, we were attacked by William of Normandy.

In fact, across the nation Harold was being defeated.

While we lost the homeland, we spread our trade to others.

God was angry with us. He struck us with plague, sealing the fact that God had ordained Harold's fall.

Harald Haardrade, a man who only came into Wessex at the end of the war, defeated Harold later that summer. The republic took the chance to secede before the Kingdom was secured.

It was during that time of strife that my 2nd child, and my first son was born,

Harald, meanwhile rewarded his friends with lands in southern England only to die the next Spring. To the joy of Saxons across the nation, Harald split his land between two sons.

We promptly rebelled.

Cornwall, which resented her republican masters took a chance, and lost. The aftermath was very pleasing.

Shortly thereafter, the civil war ended in a victory for the Saxons. The time of strife was ending.

I like this ! A republic right there could create some competition for Gotland ! Get ready to have a hard time lathough....Unless you can secure more lands ,your trade holdings will be target ofr money drain if the feudla lord stabilizes ....As for the images ,you could upload them to imageshack or imgur and then post here the link suggested for forums so they will be bigger .Anyway nice beginning

Switching from narrative to gameplay, will be easier to write. I am planning, though, to switch around, especially if the situation seems worthy to do so.


Once I had helped the Saxon rebellion and crushed Cornwall, I laid back and enjoyed a period of peace.

Here, I got piety for my good actions.

Then I got lucky, real lucky. Money doesn't just grow on trees, unless you are a republic, then it grows on events.

My 2nd daughter is born, I would prefer a son, but you live with what you get.

I looked at my republic screen after another one of the Patricians died and... there is a lot of children who are patricians or would be patrician if their father died. I guess that is what happens when you start a new republic.

My 3rd son is born. He is one letter from Ulm, which I immediately regretted not renaming him to.

Then I get sick...

Real sick...

At least he's feeling better now. Notice Osrand Rose, I hate him.

This is why. Idiot swore fealty to the Imprisoned King of England.

I get real awesome real quick. So, the republic goes from independence to slavery again, and my heir becomes awesome. Coming up next in status of the world 1081.(Yes I forgot to do it in 1080.)

Status of the world 1081!

Republic Zones:

Paradox needs to show zones that are contested by families of the same republic as part of that republic. That way there wouldn't be holes in the Channel.

What an idiot man... swearing fealty to a prisoner ! I had not seen something like this a long time .....when you get elected you should be able to remedy this situation

Indeed, especially once money starts coming in. Mercenaries, lots and lots of mercenaries.
I believe that our king is prisoner of the Duke of Normandy, the same man who captured Southampton all those years ago. Personally, I have nothing against the king, its just that more markets are open if I don't have a superior telling me who I can or cannot trade with.

1081 begins with a bang.

Free money.

I finally come of age. I end up with a terrible profession: Naive Appeaser.

Nobody expects the Wessex inquisition!

Forgot to show me declaring war, but here it is partway through. I chose it upon discovering it would allow me to imprison my liege.

However, my army is nonexistent. It was decimated after many battles and I dismissed the army so I could earn money quicker.

I earn enough money to create another mercenary army, and my liege surrenders upon his mercenary army's destruction.

I get married, spending a lot of prestige to do so.

Bah! At least it wasn't during my war.

The 1st crusade is a brilliant victory for the Christians. It was obviously won due to my awesomeness.

Christian unity, however, is underscored by French disunity. I attempt to take advantage of this, but they end the civil war before I win.

Another son is born.

And thus I become the ruler of my republic again. Even if I killed off two people to accomplish it.

This is part of a rivalry started earlier. I am proud of the result.

More money. Nuff said.
And so 20 years pass in the Republic. Tune in next time to see more death, taxes, and money-growing events.

It is nice to see that your successor seems to gain also leadership of the Republic ! in other news the Muslims are on the atatck as I can seeand Central Europe seems open for Mongol invasion ! Youhave much space for holy wars as you as you consolidate your power !

Here we go... one last update before snoozing...

Wessex has not interfered in many countries, fearing their might. This, however, is not the case with the Welsh nations.

We quickly claim victory and Swansea as our prize.

I continue to annoy patricians everywhere with my awesomeness. An interlude occurred shortly thereafter, mostly me losing money, gaining money, or me educating my multitude of children.

Then, a streak of luck. The king of England is replaced by a pretender, and Wessex breaks away, undoing the work of my long-dead predecessor.
More money and children ensue.

We also kill off the Welsh count whose father we stole Swansea from, and the first county outside our main area turns our color of red. Hurrah!
Good things occur: money, children, and skills.

We war with Brittany for Brest, their entire country borders the Ocean, future conquest will occur.

We war with Kent for Kent.

We are attacked by the King of England

He becomes the 2nd English king to be captured in this AAR, he surrenders.

We end with Northumberland attempting to outdo her master. Status of World to follow.

Notice Rus in France, apparently the guy got lucky with marriages from what I can tell.

Religion:

Notice Muslim growth in Iberia, and loss in Africa due to Pisa.

The Republics:

Ancona joins, and stations itself in Egypt. Venice is scary.

Family Zones:

I block Rose's expansion from going east of Normandy(their farthest east is Eu) and I expand up England, planning to grow around the Isles.

Republic Status:

I no longer need Campaign funds for my heir.

I'm sorry to say that this aar is abandoned, but fear not! I have learned from this and plan to make many a more aars. Sorry, but my game just lagged too much for me to continue, and I have found republics boring. I'm planning to do a custom ruler next, so that should be interesting. Till then, have a great time.
