I granted a duchy of ulster to my heir(all of my heirs get this duchy) when all of the sudden I check up on him and he's called the "doge of ulster". What the blazes is going on?

Somewhere along the line, the county title for Ulster got given to a mayor. When that happened, the city became the capital, and the area became a republic. If that mayor then got the duchy title, it too would follow suit.

The cure is to get the duchy and county titles under your control, then give the county title to the local baron. The castle should become the capitol again, and he'll give the city to a random flunky.

Or leave it alone, and dry your tears with cash.

Well, ok, not if it's your heir. But still.

But I get a -50 relation hit because of "different government types"

Ya do know that the taxes they pay is modified by their relationship score, right? -50 is a bit much to counter.

So? What's he going to do, gather up his city levies and rebel?

And call his mercenary friends with the 55% of the income you're not taking from him...

A quick thought though...? how good is it truly having a Doge, instead of two different lord mayors? Or 5 in a big duchy, with the duchy title having been destroyed. It is essentially the same income from the provinces, and it's not like L-Mayors or Doges tend to modify their tax laws for the nobility or clergy.

Bottom line, I'm thinking that 4 Lord Mayors * 100 gold income * 45% tax rate might give you the same amount of gold than 1 Doge * 400 gold income * 45% tax rate, without the traitorous little (...) feeling he's powerful enough to rebel.

So crush him, imprison him, banish him, replace him, and keep the change.

That said, I've found Doges and Lord Mayors to be both more docile and more predictable than the psychopaths living in castles.

Banishment might only be useful if you vasalize the Pope, though. A banished Doge is ussualy a -60 to -120 hit to your relations with the rest of your vassals, which might just not be profitable for a blob unless the Doge has >10K...
