I kind of love the silliness in what appears to be Delhi ending up as Sikkim...the tiny little blip of a OPM in Victoria 2 ending up owning most of India amuses me to an extent.

Chapter 7: A new player enters the field?

Since it's been a while, let's open this update with the state of the world, as far as diplomacy is concerned.

chapter7gpreview.jpg

All the GPs are in the same place they normally are in Vicky 2, except larger, apart from Lieppe-Detmold, which is actually Spain. Brazil is in Africa, France and Austria are in the right place but smaller. France is actually a 2PM, Paris and the province directly to the west of it. As far as the rest of the countries on this list, your guess is as good as mine (except Anhalt, which is sandwiched between USA and Canada, in Canada). Got it? I hope so.

January 1, 1863 -- Socialists are slowly growing in the upper house, but liberals are growing faster. I guess that's good news.

February 13, 1863 -- Sacramento and Eureka fall; the only province Mecklenburg has left (that I can reach) is San Francisco.

March 12, 1863 -- The Mecklenburgers (is that right?) try something sneaky -- they slip an army into Australia. Port Augusta is being invaded?! Whatever shall I do?

April 16, 1863 -- Oh yeah; there's the 24,000 soldiers in Wagga Wagga, who crush the pathetic attempt.

chapter7portaugusta.jpg

Mecklenburg runs to Adelaide, but one of the best things about guards is that they're faster than infantry. So I'll get there first, even get a day to dig in.

April 28, 1863 -- I pity you, Dewirix and tamius23 -- you'll never get to see an event this awesome. It is only for the freedom loving Republic of Russia (and any other power with 'Liberty' as a national value)!

chapter7libertyshines.jpg

The other option is less RPs, but 5 points of prestige; like I need prestige!

April 29, 1863 -- This of course immediately finished my existing tech (Army Decision Making), so we make our army even stronger.

chapter7pointdefense.jpg

May 3, 1863 -- Another beating for those dastardly scum from Mecklenburg!

chapter7adelaide.jpg

May 8, 1863 -- With the fall of San Francisco, they beg for mercy. Since we in Russia are magnanimous in victory, we accept.

chapter7mecklenburgpeac.jpg

July 15, 1863 -- The world just got a whole lot more interesting!

chapter7italyo.jpg

They get the Italian peninsula minus my part (Rome and the region around it; it's kind of hard to see because the Italians have the audacity to steal my color :mad:) and the British part. Parma also had a healthy amount of land in Africa, so this is a little more powerful than your average Italy. They, understandably, are GPs on the spot (#5, I think -- we'll see later on).

August 7, 1863 -- I discover Nitroglycerin. Normally I don't comment on inventions, but this means all I need for the Suez Canal is Iron Steamers.

January 1, 1864 -- I have a plan. This plan will require more troops, so I raise 81 more guards regiments, the max I can raise.

March 25, 1864 -- German Pan-Nationalists cross from Anhalt into Prince Albert (northern Canada) and are greeted by the 1st North American Division. The Pan-Nationalists are easily routed.

April 29, 1864 -- Switzerland declares war on Bavaria. I'm not called in, yet, but I suspect I might be.

June 10, 1864 -- While waiting for infamy to run down, I decide to look at adding a new sphereling. I'm utterly shocked that one power has escaped sphering altogether.

69959546.jpg

There's usually a fierce battle for influence in Japan in Vicky 2, and Japan in my game is the same as actual Japan, minus the northern island. Very curious how little interest there is, but I decide to make hay while the sun shines and pour influence into Japan.

December 22, 1864 -- Alberta, Russian Columbia, and Washington State all become States. Saskatchewan, Oregon, and Idaho get the NFs to promote bureaucrats.

December 26, 1864 -- We start researching steamers, both because my navy is horribly out of date and I really want the Suez Canal.

chapter7steamers.jpg

January 19, 1865 -- I get an acquire state CB against Italy; I think about it for a moment (before checking their colonies; silly on my part) and decide not to take advantage, since I want to see if a strong Italy can cause havoc in Central Europe.

February 25, 1865 -- Mecklenburg is booted out of GP status by Russian ally and sphereling Hungary. I wonder if my destroying most of their army had something to do with it? :happy:

June 6, 1865 -- This is kind of a neat event, I guess.

chapter7gurkhas.jpg

May 30, 1866 -- Time for Iron Steamers!

chapter7ironsteamers.jpg

July 2, 1866 -- I hate losing RGO and factory productivity, so I decide to close a beer hall in Ekaterinodar. I'd feel guilty if I didn't know that they probably had plenty to drink at home. Russia: World's #1 producer of liquor!

May 31, 1867 -- Russia gets its first worthwhile sphereling.

chapter7japansphere.jpg

A couple of days later, they ask for an alliance and I accept.

June 7, 1867 -- Czechs and Swiss sign a white peace -- is this part of that whole Bavaria mess a couple of years ago? Surprised the Swiss didn't call me.

June 28, 1867 -- Just some election results, nothing else to see here.

chapter7election.jpg

What's that you say? My map happens to be showing Manchukuo? Isn't that odd?

... You aren't implying something, are you? Well, let me put your mind at ease. Russia has no aggressive designs on Manchukuo.

Our infamy is still too high.

For now! Mwa ha ha ha hah!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This weekend, I hope to get another update for this AAR and perhaps (if I'm lucky) two for NRI. We'll just have to see!

April 28, 1863 -- I pity you, Dewirix and tamius23 -- you'll never get to see an event this awesome. It is only for the freedom loving Republic of Russia (and any other power with 'Liberty' as a national value)!

Well, I guess there has to be some compensation for those benighted nations that can't be ruled over by a direct descendant of the sun goddess. Who needs research points when you have divine favour?

Nice to see Italy forming, although with your territory cutting the Italian peninsula in two they might have issues with rebels.

You might get a little one-time bonus, but I have more than double your monthly RPs. :p

Very nice, I loved your EU3 Russia AAR and just found this one! Have you considered trying to help a mega-Germany form? Germany, Italy, GB, and mega-Russia would make for some interesting times...

Touche! :)

Honestly, if there was a way to sell provinces in Vicky 2 or some mechanic beyond editing the save game, I'd just let Italy have the whole peninsula, since there's no real bonus to owning Rome in Vicky 2. What do you guys think, should I edit the save game?

You might get a little one-time bonus, but I have more than double your monthly RPs. :p

Very true; I've ignored the cultural techs up to this point, which is probably hurting me, but with Military Industrial Complex it's too tempting to keep beefing up my army and industry. The longer I wait, the less the payoff, so we'll see if I go with it later on.

Very nice, I loved your EU3 Russia AAR and just found this one! Have you considered trying to help a mega-Germany form? Germany, Italy, GB, and mega-Russia would make for some interesting times...

That's an interesting idea. The problem is I'm sitting on some German cores, and I don't want to give them up. More to the point, Czechoslovakia can't form Germany, I don't think, and that's the only real candidate.

Great update! You could consider taking Rome if you wanted Italy to be in the game with the full peninsula. Up to you.

As for this update, I thought it was really good. I've never seen that Gurkha event before. Not bad...shame it only affects one province.

Thanks for the feedback! I've never seen it either; maybe I still technically have an Indian province or two? I won't be able to edit the save game, since I've played ahead through another update, but maybe after the next update.

Rather than editing the save game, you could add it in as a decision for Russia, and give us a screenshot of the flavour text!

Just read through this: Lippe as Spain, Swiss Scandinavia, Russian Democracy, What absurdity is this!? Oh dear, I think this is the funnies non-comedy AAR i've seen in a while.

That Askari event is quite common if you play as France, but I've never seen the Comet event before either.

I'm helpless when it comes to modding, or I'd take you up on the offer!

Thanks for the kind words! I love that the Comet in Vicky 2 is a positive, not a negative.

It's actually pretty easy. You'd just have to add a text file (called whatever you like) in the Victoria 2\decisions folder with the following text:

Code:
political_decisions = {
	roman_cession = {
		potential = {
			NOT = {
				has_country_flag = only_one_Rome
			}
			tag = RUS
			RUS = {
				OR = {
					owns = 749
				}
			}
		}

		effect = {
			749 = {
			secede_province = ITA
			}
			set_country_flag = only_one_Rome
		}
		ai_will_do = {
			factor = 0
		}
	}
}

That just works for the Rome province itself - you'd have to add the others as I'm not sure what they are.

To get the proper name to show up add the following two lines to the bottom of text.csv in the Victoria 2\localisation folder just before the last line:

Code:
		roman_cession_title;Roman Cession;Roman Cession;Roman Cession;;Roman Cession;;;;;;;;;x
		roman_cession_desc;Since the beginning of the century Russia and Rome have been growing apart. Today marks the final phase of their separation, with the cession of Rome to the new Italian state.;;;;;;;;;;;;;x

Just change the description in the second part to whatever you like. Note that you have to edit text.csv in something like TextPad - don't use Excel as it screws things up. Anything that you use to edit save games should work fine. I'd make a backup of text.csv before attempting to change it.

That does actually look somewhat simple. I think I'll experiment when I've got some time and then decide whether or not to implement it. I think I deserve at least an infamy reduction for my largesse, don't you think? Maybe 5 or 10 points? What do you guys think would be fear?

2 actually, I think that's what the UK gets for ceding Caribou to the US via event. For each other province you liberate, add an extra 1 or 2 infamy reduction, and possibly raise your militancy by a small amount. (upset about losing "Russian" land, forced relocation of Russian immigrants, etc.)

The UK gets an infamy reduction of four for releasing the Ionian Islands to Greece. I'd say five points overall would be fair. It probably should be a little higher, but we don't want to make it too easy do we?

The decisions usually come with a prestige boost for the releasing state too.

I've got a total of five Italian provinces, so I think 5 points sounds very fair. My provinces are Rome, Apulia, Ancona, Viterbo, and Perugia -- how would we fix the decision to take them and our infamy boost?

I also think that it should move the Italian capital to Rome and greatly improve relations.

This should do everything you need:

Code:
political_decisions = {
	roman_cession = {
		potential = {
			NOT = {
				has_country_flag = only_one_Rome
			}
			tag = RUS
			RUS = {
				OR = {
					owns = 749 # Rome
					owns = 750 # Viterbo
					owns = 751 # Perugia
					owns = 752 # Ancona
					owns = 753 # Aquila
				}
			}
		}

		effect = {

			749 = {
				secede_province = ITA
				add_core = ITA
			}

			750 = {
				secede_province = ITA
				add_core = ITA
			}

			751 = {
				secede_province = ITA
				add_core = ITA
			}

			752 = {
				secede_province = ITA
				add_core = ITA
			}

			753 = {
				secede_province = ITA
				add_core = ITA
			}

			relation = {
				who = ITA
				value = 100
			}

			badboy = -5

			set_country_flag = only_one_Rome

			ITA = {
				capital = 749
			}

		}
		ai_will_do = {
			factor = 0
		}
	}
}

It increases Russo-Italian relations by 100 and reduces your infamy by five. Italy gets cores on all the ceded provinces and has its capital moved to Rome.

Thank you very much! I'll work on the localization stuff and will make this my first decision when I fire the game back up.

EDIT: Worked like a charm! The only thing I had to wait for was to get my troops out of the area, just in case, but it worked beautifully.

Chapter 8: We march ever eastward

September 28, 1867 -- Dear Switzerland, stop asking me to fight all of your wars for you. Sincerely, Russia.

chapter8austriawar.jpg

This war is actually pretty inconveniently timed. If I had more time, I might try to take some land from Austria, but for now I'll have to settle for cutting them down to size, as the Swiss want.

Also, here is my brilliant invasion plan.

chapter8austriainvaison.jpg

October 3, 1867 -- Wallonia refuses to pay their debts?! But why? Our interest rates are so reasonable! We don't start kneecapping until you're two weeks late, not like those other guys.

We discover Steam Transports as well; all of my current transports shall be upgraded.

October 12, 1867 -- Victory tastes mighty sweet.

chapter8battleofsalonik.jpg

December 27, 1867 -- Now, after being a bunch of deadbeats, Wallonia wants an alliance? If they weren't so intolerably cute, just an itty-bitty little OPM, I'd say no. But I can't resist those puppy dog eyes.

December 30, 1867 -- Back to the war; I'd really like a piece of Austria's North American colonies, but 10 infamy is a steep price to pay.

chapter8northamerica.jpg

April 4, 1868 -- There are tensions with Canada! I have no idea what the other choice was -- probably instant war, maybe -- but I choose to sacrifice 1 prestige, because hey, prestige is as plentiful in Russia as vodka.

April 20, 1868 -- Recipe for unending war: Three GPs in two separate wars both fighting over the same country, but each GP can only reach part of the offending country. That's the Swiss, the Czechs, and me. The Swiss want to cut Austria down to size. The Czechs want Austria in their sphere. If we'd all agree to work together, this war would be over. But we won't. And so this war will probably last until the end of the game.

The Austrians and Russians clash for the first time in Carson City; there will be four battles in Carson City, all Russian victories. You'll get to see the last one.

May 27, 1868 -- I take a bit of a gamble. I really want Machine Guns as quickly as possible, but I think I can squeeze in one more tech, with a little luck. I decide to go after Military Statistics.

chapter8militarystatist.jpg

Apart from Machine Guns, the other major army tech I want now is Hussars. I'm not sure what to do about artillery; they'll slow my guards down (a lot) but give me some serious firepower. With such huge amounts of territory, speed is honestly more valuable to me, at least for now.

May 27, 1868 -- The Russian flag flies over the new Suez Canal.

chapter8suezc.jpg

Granted, if there's any power in the game who won't get a lot of mileage out of it, it's actually me, but it does look neat.

June 16, 1868 -- Austria offers a white peace. I seriously consider accepting, but I'm still in denial here, thinking that the Czechs will white peace first. It seems wrong to sell my allies down the river, at least in this game.

July 18, 1868 -- Oh no! Sabotage in Vilyuysk! I decide to tweak the noses of my Rich strata there; I think they're far too smug. +2 to CON and MIL, but in an isolated region, it will be almost entirely pointless.

October 20, 1868 -- All hail the mighty comet!

chapter8newcomet.jpg

October 27, 1868 -- The Battle of Seattle not only rhymes, but is another glorious Russian victory.

December 20, 1868 -- The Canadian contingent of the Austrian army is obliterated at the Battle of Prince Rupert.

chapter8princerupert.jpg

February 17, 1869 -- The Carson City army joins its friends from Canada in Fourth Carson City.

chapter8carsoncity4.jpg

August 18, 1869 -- Best 1000 £ I've ever spent.

chapter8nilesource.jpg

September 10, 1869 -- Since two never ending wars isn't enough, Hungary decides to make it three. Despite the fact that every last acre of Austrian land is occupied by Switzerland, Czechoslovakia, or Russia.

January 1, 1870 -- Thanks to the comet and a few strategic RP bonuses from Discriminatory School System (keep discriminating, guys!), I finish my old tech ahead of schedule, and wait a couple of weeks to pounce on machine guns.

chapter8machineguns.jpg

Colonize entire planet, here I come!

February 17, 1870 -- My first oil well! It's in Kyzyl Arvat, which is sufficiently obscure that I had to look it up.

::checks Wikipedia::

It's apparently modern day Turkmenistan. Good for them!

April 22, 1870 -- Czechoslovakia takes Siebenburgen out of my sphere. They're welcome to it.

July 10, 1870 -- Since war with Austria is going exactly nowhere, and they have no troops, I decide it's time to go after my old nemesis. Circled is the target of my first war goal.

chapter8warwithmanchuku.jpg

Hmm... that's an interesting little wrinkle. Still, Russia fears no one! I call the UK's bluff; they'll never intervene in the war, which makes the results almost certain. Even better, the Swiss don't come when I call, so I have no compunction about ending the stupid war with Austria as a white peace. I hope the MIL makes the Swiss revolt. Stupid jerks.

July 27, 1870 -- I win the first two battles. Seriously, this war isn't that interesting. Unless I'm outnumbered 10 to 1, I win every battle, and even if I lose, we have roughly equivalent casualties. So we'll kind of speed through this one.

September 22, 1870 -- I invade the UK's client, and they ask me for military access for whatever war they're fighting right now. I chortle as I click 'Decline'.

November 27, 1870 -- Another 2000 £ down the drain to look for the source of the Nile. Shouldn't I get this for free, since I pretty much own the Nile?

December 18, 1870 -- Liberty shines again! More sweet, sweet RPs. You think liberty shines now?! Wait until I have machine guns!

chapter8machineguns.jpg

December 29, 1870 -- I add my second war goal; you'll see where it is when I win. There have been a dozen battles so far; none is the least bit interesting.

February 19, 1871 -- That's kind of neat, but why didn't I get Tut's tomb? Nobody else has asked me for permission, and I'd tell them no if they did. The mummies are all mine, I tells ya! Mine!

chapter8atomb.jpg

As a funny side note, I originally named this screenshot "chapter8atomb", for a tomb, but thought for a moment I'd somehow gotten an atom bomb in Vicky 2. That would sure speed things up!

April 29, 1871 -- My first social reform!

chapter8socialreform.jpg

May 6, 1871 -- I'm losing enough troops that I decide to mobilize. As always, Manchukuo did this six months ago. A helpful side note to new players: think of mobilization like a game of chicken; you always want to be the last one to mobilize. The AI almost always blinks.

June 4, 1871 -- 2000 £ more down the drain. Oh no! It will take me a whole 48 hours to replace the investment!

June 20, 1871 -- Sweet victory! I'm cleaning up borders at this point; I'm not so concerned with the value of my new territories, or I'd be going after Korea.

chapter8victory.jpg

The area circled was my second war goal.

July 13, 1871 -- Saskatchewan, Oregon, Idaho, and Halaib are all ready to become states. I don't add new NFs yet, because...

August 28, 1871 -- MACHINE GUNS!!!!! My next tech will give me Hussars, my secret weapon until I get Airplanes.

chapter8militarylogisti.jpg

October 19, 1871 -- Here are my new colonies. My main objective is to keep the UK out of the interior of Africa.

chapter8newcolonies.jpg

December 28, 1871 -- Recognizing how awesome machine guns are, my people reelect the Westernizers. Good move.

chapter8election.jpg

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm caught up again with Vicky 2; this is a busier week than normal, so I'm going to quickly update NRI and Descent into Madness tonight and tomorrow night; after that, no updates until next week.
