must say your Republic in the nineteenth century is far more aggressive than the cute docile realm we followed in earlier years

Very true; however, I don't intend to start WWI, you understand. If all I got was better borders in Manchukuo at this point, I'd be totally happy.

A few things.

1. Seems your Danzig was actually Ruthenia, by the flag.

2. Foix -> Latvia? ?

3. I just give my filenames "shay123" where 123 is the number of the screenie. I'm up to about 50 in my continuation and 300 in my EU3 part.

4. I'm at war with Egypt too, and Czechoslovakia formed.

5. WW1 and 2 have already happened in my game.

Since we're both using the same version of the converter and both have huge empires, I thought I'd let you know.

I also discover something interesting; there will never be an NGF unless somebody takes the NGF cores I hold in East Prussia. So yeah, no Germany in this game, because I'm not about to let that happen. Same thing for Italy, since I control Rome.

Germany and Italy can both be formed by nationalist rebels, but there's no chance of them forming via decision with you sitting on those cores. Given Austria, Mecklenburg and Wurttemberg are all GPs (for now at least) it looks like any one of those three could become the new Germany.

If Germany does form, Czechoslovakia could be in for a rough ride, given that they're sitting on a lot of German cores.

Thanks for the info guys. I'm very interested to see if I will have a proper World War or not; I'd really rather have peace, to be honest.

Chapter 3: Reform at home, boredom abroad

January 4, 1845 -- The upper house remains overwhelmingly liberal, nearly achieving 50% control all by themselves. They'll slowly increase their proportion in the upper house throughout this update.

January 27, 1845 -- We turn a slight deficit into a slight surplus. It's time, I think, to investigate why there's so much red in my pies as well.

chapter3balancebudget.jpg

The poor and middle class probably need a tax cut; since it's not a significant part of any one region or class, this should go away as the economy improves. The capitalists are both suffering disproportionately (about 45% of them); this is partly because some Factories just aren't profitable or finished yet. This also helps illustrate one of my long-held principles in Vicky 2: Tariffs are always more destructive to the economy than taxes.

Taxes come out of the capitalist pockets, but don't really affect growth. Because high tariffs make some input goods more expensive, however, they do affect growth. One thing you, the Vicky 2 player, want is growth. Big factories and RGOs mean more profits long-term; tariffs are (and should be) a strictly short-term solution. If not for my party, I would have increased taxes instead of tariffs. Don't worry, people of Russia -- help is on the way!

May 20, 1845 -- Let's take a look at the Great Powers, shall we?

chapter3diplomacy.jpg

Nobody is seriously threatening me as #1, nor shall they, if I have anything to say about it. The last spot will trade hands a LOT; prestige (from techs) is the big driver, it seems. My military score lead is quite comfortable, although the UK has expanded a lot and has been particularly militaristic, mostly in areas I'm not concerned about.

I take this opportunity to start influencing Hungary; I'm just not too concerned with the whole sphere of influence thing in this game, because I've got pretty much everything I could want here in Russia. Hungary is more an afterthought than anything else.

June 15, 1845 -- Oh no! Atjeh is harassing my merchants! I'd declare war on them if I could be bothered to find them on a map.

July 6, 1845 -- Saskatchewan now belongs to the Russian people. Huzzah!

chapter3nf.jpg

It's kind of depressing that the vast majority of my people live in China. Oh well. Still waiting for Prophylaxis against Malaria to fire, so I can use NFs to colonize instead of build up the clergy. I'm at the max invention rate for it (5%); this must be the Victoria II gods punishing me for being so awesome. Sorry, but I can't help it!

October 8, 1845 -- The salvation of my economy; a new technology begins!

chapter3practicalsteame.jpg

These are among the most underrated ways to boost the economy. I notice a lot of players jump on modernizing railways as quickly as possible; however, a flat (and massive!) boost to all RGOs far exceeds any bonus railways give. Whenever I need to hugely grow the economy, I turn to one of these techs.

October 18, 1845 -- Yeah, it took me ten in-game days to realize I had a new NF to assign from State & Government. Whoops!

chapter3siberiannf.jpg

Fun fact: in my timeline, northern Siberia has more people than Moscow or St. Petersburg. I have no idea why. (I've skipped over a couple of regions in India that have more people but already have 3.5% clergy, which means they're doing fine on their own).

February 15, 1846 -- I get a new event I've never seen -- Flying University. It makes me think of a huge flying university, like the Castle in the Sky from Final Fantasy I, only a university and presumably with fewer War Mechs. :p

The practical effects are a provincial +2.0% research points modifier coupled with an increase in both MIL and CON; not a bad deal.

March 17, 1846 -- With nearly 5% clergy in my largest region (Zhongding), I shift the NF to another Siberian state.

chapter3anothernewnfp.jpg

Also, Switzerland beats Austria and takes South Tirol. I find it fascinating that Switzerland won't call me into wars, but then again, they seem to be doing well enough on their own.

March 30, 1846 -- Pff. Like I'm going to let a bunch of should-be-Spaniards stop me from finding new plants.

chapter3botanicalexpedi.jpg

May 28, 1846 -- One long term goal is border cleanup around Manchukuo; to this end, I'm still expanding my army in the Far East. Another 18 divisions (it is divisions, right?) I will do this until every province has a massive army in it. Fair play is for chumps; I prefer overwhelming firepower.

June 3, 1846 -- My first border incident. Yes! Which country shall suffer Russia's wrath?

chapter3norway.jpg

Norway. It's not worth it. They pretty much have the edge of the Scandinavian Coast and a small chunk of Africa they somehow got, despite not being anywhere near a port. Yeah. If only fjords were an RGO, I could corner the market!

However, we do get a marginally useful addition to the Republic of Russia.

chapter3hungarytosoi.jpg

That's Hungary, by the way. Thus ends my desires to expand my sphere of influence. The only country worth sphere-ing, in all honesty, is Manchukuo, and I intend my expansion there to be more... direct.

September 29, 1846 -- All hail the new Great Power -- Crimea, encompassing Foix and Pau on the French-Spanish border.

chapter3allhailcrimea.jpg

October 5, 1846 -- By taking Leinster-Connacht from Schleswig, the British have united the British Isles. I respond by shrugging.

February 22, 1847 -- A new reform, remaining careful not to expand the electorate.

chapter3nonsocialistref.jpg

I want people to want social reform, so this is a good place to reform.

June 6, 1847 -- Another invention that isn't Prophylaxis against Malaria fires. ::sigh::

If you care, it's Clericalism vs. Anticlericalism, which is a nice bonus to Plurality, but not exactly earth-shatteringly awesome.

August 10, 1847 -- Anhalt declares war on the USA. Patriotism for my native land forces me to examine the situation.

chapter3usausausa.jpg

That's Anhalt in the pinkish between the two parts of the USA. If the Civil War fires, it would probably be the least interesting Civil War in history.

September 1, 1847 -- I get practical steam engine, and move on to the invention-riffic Mechanical Production. The tech itself is nice, but the inventions can work wonders on your factories and RGOs.

chapter3mechproduction.jpg

I also ban Mecklenburg in Hanover. Stay out of my sphere, Mecklenburg!

September 11, 1847 -- See what I mean about how awesome the Practical Steam Engine tech would be?

chapter3poweroftech.jpg

I cut tariffs to zero; I considered also cutting taxes, but decided to use my surplus to make my ridiculously huge army even more huge. Possibly even more ridiculous.

January 1, 1848 -- Russia -- where the working man can freely express himself. Who needs the Bolsheviks?

chapter3allunionsallowe.jpg

January 4, 1848 -- Our first revolution! Ukraine is a 2PM in the middle of Germany.

chapter3revolution.jpg

Somehow, I don't think Taras Shevchenko will have the same impact in German. It's hard to devote your life to popularizing a language that's already incredibly popular and prevalent.

March 29, 1848 -- The UK takes a bite out of Ethiopia; that's actually kind of irritating, to be honest. The British better watch their steps.

Crimea is bumped by Brazil, which is in Africa.

May 6, 1848 -- Chartists rally, demanding universal suffrage. I'll take the prestige for now, but you'll get your universal suffrage when I'm damn good and ready to give it to you.

August 15, 1848 -- Poor USA; Manitoba now belongs to Anhalt.

October 25, 1848 -- Switzerland signs a Status Quo peace with Czechoslovakia -- the first Great War in my game worthy of the name goes entirely without me noticing. That's kind of depressing. I wonder why the Swiss didn't call me?

January 1, 1849 -- My upper house is 54.69% Liberal, so it's time for another reform. We're going to work on making ballots more private.

chapter3ballots.jpg

The bonus to immigration is more than worth a minor decrease in support for the ruling party, who will probably win every election anyway, since in Russia, all political parties are Pro-Military (for now).

May 30, 1849 -- Time for another new tech.

chapter3interchangeable.jpg

This was a really hard decision. I seriously thought about banking RPs for Nationalism and Imperialism. However, I have a feeling that Machine Parts will be lucrative (since I'll have, by default, as much of the market as I want) and the other inventions are nice too. N&I will be my pick once this is done.

June 28, 1849 -- Our elections return 77% of the electorate in favor of my ruling party. This is why I don't want the poor to vote; the last thing I want is the Slavophiles (or, ugh, Panslavs) in power.

It's always amusing that extending the franchise is one of the worst ways of perpetuating a liberal upper house.

Everything seems to be going well, but the British seem to be acting with increasing aggression. Possibly a worry for the future, particularly as they'll likely have a big and advanced navy.

still getting used to this world you've created - that is one seriously divided N America ... isn't it your duty to make all a nice uniform green?

Shh! No spoiling my secret plans!

The only thing I can think of is that the UK has a bunch of unclaimed cores somehow, because their infamy remains very low. Doubling my anger is the fact that the fools still have a tiny part of Anatolia.

I'm not sure what I'm going to do about the navy. Part of me just wants to leave the Brits to their own devices, but another part of me is rebelling at mere passivity.

I'm getting very close to taking down Manchukuo; waiting for some more infamy burn. I'm hoping to neaten my borders in the Far East (including, if possible, taking all of Korea) before I go West in any big way. That will mean fewer armies in the east, which is always good.

Although I have about zero knowlegde of Vicky 2 I must say this is a pretty interesting game. It is written very different from the Italian EU3 AAR though.
Isnt there a way to change the country names to their actual names? (Forgive me for my ignorance)

Your Russia is massive btw, is there anyone who could even try to be a threat to you?

North America looks like it has already deteriorated into a civil war o_O

With other powers controling the diffrent sides, appart of some small rebel independent force....

It would be extremely time consuming, but theoretically possible. Plus, I like the absurdity of it, which makes me laugh.

My size is also my weakness; I've got a lot of territory. Most of my people are in the Far East, but most of the biggest powers are in the west. If Czechoslovakia declared war on me tomorrow, I'd probably win, but it would take a long time.

My biggest fear would be a massive rebellion. Because I won't expand the franchise (yet), MIL has hovered around 1 for most of the game.

North America looks like it has already deteriorated into a civil war o_O

You're right; a lot of that was just the way it was colonized in EU 3.

Chapter 4: The calm before the storm

July 1, 1849 -- Paraguay has rebelled. I have no idea where Paraguay in this game, nor have I taken the trouble to look.

September 24, 1849 -- Now wait a minute, this must be some kind of propaganda. The Russian Republic does not exile people to Siberia unless they really deserve it!

chapter4petrashevsky.jpg

November 7, 1849 -- It's about damn time. Time to get some major colonization going on!

chapter4hallelujah.jpg

Well, if by major, you would mean two extra regions in Africa. Still, the Republic of Russia is not one to turn its nose up at... enlightening... people from other lands.

chapter4newcolonies.jpg

If I'd gotten it sooner, I might have been able to crowd out British expansion in Africa.

January 1, 1850 -- Still well over 50% liberal; time to pass a new reform!

chapter4secretballots.jpg

April 10, 1850 -- Time to spice things up; our loyal ally Prussia has asked us to intervene in their war with Mecklenburg. How can we say no?

chapter4war.jpg

January 1, 1851 -- It's been nearly a year and there's been no contact between our forces. Thrilling, isn't it. We do get a new gold province -- Nikolyaevsk-na-Amure. We pay Prussia some war subsidies, and Austria gets a chunk bitten out of it by Czechoslovakia. We also pass a new reform.

chapter4wealth.jpg

The upper house is still overwhelmingly liberal, but I think the next step will drive them out of the upper house.

January 5, 1851 -- Oops. Totally forgot that Mecklenburg had Northern California. I'd take it from them if I had the infamy, but for now, we shall suffer an inglorious defeat.

chapter4battleofportlan.jpg

January 10, 1851 -- Apparently, my pathetic performance has galvanized support for the Prussian cause. Enter the true champion of liberty!

chapter4herecomesthecav.jpg

I'm not sure how much Brazil can do, since they're in Africa and have no access to the sea (the last time I checked).

April 13, 1851 -- I guess Brazil did something, since Mecklenburg peaces out despite the fact that I've not won any battles. I wonder if the 33,000 Russian troops that just landed in Oregon had something to do with it?

chapter4whitepeacemeckl.jpg

I initially rejected this, but submitted my own offer after I remember I couldn't afford to take Northern California, infamy wise.

September 24, 1851 -- To thank my citizens for their efforts, I cut poor taxes to 25% and middle class taxes to 35%.

November 17, 1851 -- Border incident on Moldavia (think central and southern Italy) -- sounds good to me! Surely my 27,000 troops in Rome can handle Moldavia by themselves.

chapter4wargoals.jpg

December 9, 1851 -- 40,000 Moldavian troops appearing outside of Rome convinces me otherwise. I start construction of a transport fleet that will bring reinforcements from the Black Sea to Italy; we start with 13 Clipper Transports.

January 1, 1852 -- I think very carefully about this one. If I make the Upper House based on population, I'll definitely lose the upper house for liberals. It's a little fuzzier, I think, if I go weighted universal, hoping that my Liberal Capitalists will drown out the conservative masses.

chapter4weightedunivers.jpg

January 7, 1852 -- We finish Interchangeable Parts and start on Nationalism and Imperialism.

chapter4ni.jpg

March 31, 1852 -- Czechoslovakia removes Hungary from my sphere; I add it back three seconds later. Isn't this fun? I love GP politics.

April 13, 1852 -- This will not be as easy as I thought. Hold on, Vladislav! Help is on the way.

chapter4battleofperugia.jpg

August 3, 1852 -- Russian politicians, although thrilled by the new art, have one burning question.

chapter4hermitage.jpg

"What's a Czar?" (or, if you prefer [and I do], Tsar)

August 30, 1852 -- Mecklenburg insults my ambassador; I decide to let them slide (mostly since I can't go after N. California yet).

October 31, 1852 -- After two landings (one in Sicily and one on the other side of the straits of Messina), I realize I still can't move my doomstack, so the Black Sea Transport Fleet gets another 5 clipper transports.

November 20, 1852 -- The Expedition of the Thousand is thwarted in Messina by my Twenty-Two Thousand. Maybe Garibaldi will get another shot later on.

January 1, 1853 -- Looks my capitalists need shouting lessons.

chapter4upperhouseconse.jpg

January 17, 1853 -- I'm not doing so great in Italy, but I did finish one African colony and start another.

chapter4darfur.jpg

January 29, 1853 -- Yes, I lose again, but the important thing is I'm gobbling up southern Italy while the Moldavian army chases me around.

chapter4perugia2.jpg

April 13, 1853 -- After Naples, the Moldavian capital (that feels so weird when I type it) falls, they capitulate, despite my less than impressive battle prowess.

chapter4victorymoldavia.jpg

Ancona and Perugia are now Russian. I also finish another colony, but I've gone as far inland into Africa as I can right now, so Lahore gets an NF on clergymen.

July 8, 1853 -- As I initially bask in glory that I'm still #1 in the world by a country mile, I am slapped out of complacency.

chapter4manchu.jpg

Manchukuo has a bigger army than me?! Well, I know one way to fix that.

December 28, 1853 -- With elections over, I turn my eyes to Manchukuo. Your time has come. I think I shall forcibly discourage enrollment in your army.

chapter4election.jpg

By slaughtering your troops. I know I've implied that, but I thought I should make it explicit
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The next update is actually even more epic than war with Manchukuo; I end up in four (!!) wars, only one of which isn't very serious. It might even take two parts!

Also, how is there no evil grin smilie yet? We have every other kind.

Long borders plus dire EU3 relationship ratings seem to make for a whole heap of border incidents. Even with your infamy you're getting a steady stream of CBs.

You seem to be teching at a good pace, and I'm very jealous of your liberal politics.

is this huge powerful Manchukuo roughly where its supposed to be?

I think because Russia is more central to the EU3 dynamics I'm struggling a bit more with your world's V2 geography than with Dewirix's.

Still fascinating stuff and wonderful to see Russia as the nineteenth century powerhouse of classical liberalism
