I am wondering if there is any replayability. I am sure I will screw up my characters skills at some point and was wondering if I can have more than one character saved? yet to see this in any streams.

This game is like X-Com in that you will have a large number of characters in your merc company. If you're not happy with how you built one, you can bench him/her and build up another.

In fact, given the amount of time required for your characters to heal up, I expect that you will have a lot of characters built a lot of different ways by the end of the game.

Also consider the large number of choices you make to create your character in the beginning. Playing through with different characters, making different choices throughout the game, etc all lend to replayability.

Also, there is a large amount of replayability in terms of self-inflicted limitations. Maybe you play through once using the best mechs you have. Then another time using only light (or some other weight class) mechs. Or only spiders. And so on. Maybe you go through playing only story missions one time and then another you ignore most of the story missions.

Yes. You can have multiple characters saved. That said, they would each be in their own campaign. You would not have multiple 'primary' characters in the same campaign. As far as 'screwing up' skills, I'm pretty sure that will be extremely hard to do. Each character will be able to slot into one or more roles in your company, it's just a matter of figuring out which role to put them in. Maybe you intended to have one character be "THE SNIPER" with uber gunnery, but then you accidentally made them a Guts specialist...well, you have other characters that can take over that uber gunner role with training.

I think the thing we will have to watch very close is the money and income stream.

Screw that up and you will have to restart.

Giving a pilot the wrong skill just means their role changes. Accidentally go for tactics with your brawler, change them into the scouting role.

I don't see any correlation between replayability and...eh, anything related to speccing out characters. That system is fairly straightforward, being built to complement the tactical game without dominating gameplay.

Replayability for many of us will be contingent on the richness of the tactical game, the variation provided by the proc-gen missions and then escalating the challenge, either through official game modes or mods. If Battletech keeps us making varied and interesting decisions on subsequent playthroughs, it will have good replay value.

The replayability to me lies in the procedurally generated Missions, at least until/if 5-Skull Difficulty eventually prove too manageable.

But then I'll just be tempted to try again, and this time support Lady Kamea of course. : )

I suspect the origin stories will have a limited effect on game choices. Its mostly there for flavor text, much like it is in Tyranny (great game).

Outside of the story missions, the campaign is an endless sandbox mode. Just like xcom, i can almost guarantee there will be mods to make the campagin longer and more difficulty. And people will do all kinds of ridiculous changeling modes, such as sticking with the subpar mechs like quickdraws and dragoons and seeing if you can win. Someones going to be trying out 4 Jenner lances.

With experience the campaign will become as predictable as Xcom's but Xcom still sees a lot of replays and I can see the same for battletech.

Not familiar with Tyranny, but the background choices you make in character generation do open up dialogue options here. Even in the couple of streams that I have watched, I've seen background-oriented dialogue choices show up, so I expect there to be many more of those. Whether those have a tangible impact on the game or are just flavor remains to be seen, but there is part of the replayability. One playthrough go full background (take every background-oriented dialogue choice you get). One playthrough, avoid them. I'm sure there are some folks that will end up mapping the dialogue trees in much the same way that someone put together the background generation tree.

In past similar games of Front Mission 3 and Mechcommander 2, my replay value came from using different types of mechs mostly and building up different pilots secondarily. So for mechcommander 2 that meant only using Steiner mechs, or Liao mechs, or Clan mechs. For Front mission it meant only using OCU, Chinese, American, European, or Russian (imaginary number) mechs.

Off topic Front Mission 3 did have quads so kudos SquareEnix.

Replaying to level pilots was less interesting and really only a time sink as they all felt the same. If this game is to have replay value for me, I’ll have to mod my pilots to make them personal to me.

I got bored with XCOM before my 1st play through was done for some reason. I did enjoy customizing my squad but there were no mechs.

I suspect the origin stories will have a limited effect on game choices. Its mostly there for flavor text, much like it is in Tyranny (great game).

There should be have some differences, we were promised:
"
$1,200,000 - Player-Character Origin Stories: In BATTLETECH, you’ll create your own mercenary character to star in the story. If we hit this funding level, you'll be able to choose one of six origin stories for your mercenary commander's career. Are you the only heir of a once noble family that has since fallen from favor? The bastard child of a famous MechWarrior? You decide.
"

So I am only guessing but based on that we might end up realizing out dad were famous mechwarrior but we did not know it or something else.. six origin stories should be somewhere inside the game unless I am mistaken or reading wrong they information? This far there have been a change to be only heir of a once noble family (we have seen that from youtube).

@Kreivi we do pick the origin story. Nothing in the stretch goal implies that it would have story-impact though. The fact that it DOES (i.e. dialogue choices are opened by certain background choices) is purely additional awesomeness.

How much it impacts the story or available choices is up in the air however...

From what we've seen in streams so far, it is pure Biowarean illusion of choice, outside of a specific choose-your-own-adventure scenario that might pop up randomly during travelling (which is completely inconsequential to the main story).

Not to say that is bad, mind you. But expecting your origin to have any impact on the narrative would be inadvisable.

So far it just appears to be fairly trivial. A minor boost/penalty to your medical/mechtech ratings or morale, inspiration gains for mechwarriors, injuries for mechwarriors, etc.

I fell in love with the Front Mission series recently, since I had never heard of it until someone had mentioned it during the BattleTech Beta. I started with Front Mission 1 (SNES) (English Translated) and its an absolute blast. Since then acquired Front Mission 2 (PS1) (English Translated), Front Mission 3 (PS1), Front Mission 4 (PS2), Front Mission 5 (PS2) (English Translated).

I have Front Mission 3 and Front Mission 4. They were fun games, although I'll be honest, I don't think I finished either of them. It wasn't from a lack of fun or boredom (they were always good and entertaining games), Just something else would pop up and I'd set it down and forget about them for a while.

Regardless, I always think fondly of them and I'd recommend them to fans of tactical turn based games.
