I'm curious, will renaming be allowed in EU2? Renaming cities would make sense for certain provinces at certain points (like placing St.Petersburg in Ingermanland in 1703), and renaming your country might also be of some use (it would be weird to have "Muscovy" in 1700 when it's controlling half the map). Perhaps the AI could also be programmed to make certain historical renamings like I mentioned above.

That would be a nice option, especially if you want to rename the provinces of a country to their names in the native language (I mean "Saxony" isn't German at all :D).

Renaming of Provinces isnt possible as the map is "drawn".
Johan did do a test but the results were not good. Even on his computer changing a Province name took far too long. The map is 512MB uncompressed and it would have to be uncompressed, altered, re rendered and compressed again. Believe me that is not viable on this version.
City names - It has been suggested that as they are *not* on the map then it should be possible to change them in the Province Detail box.
We await an answer.

I believe it is, but that's a little longwinded for your average gamer (trying not to insult anyone on the forums here!) It's not really an option when playing a regular game for long periods, in my opinion.

I support the idea of renaming provinces-since it's better than having a default list for every nation of something like seven or eight hundred names!:D

Not to be too cavalier here - but who really cares about changing the city name? Most players spend the vast majority of their time thinking about the province names and the city names add good flavor - but they're incidental and overlooked. I really wouldn't lose any sleep over not being able to change the city names.

Not even when you have a colonial city, as England, in India called "New Eastern Pommerania"?

It's that sort of thing some of us don't really like, when the preset defaults list runs out.:)

The point is that it would be a nice bit of chrome, which is always useful if you have time to add it in. The important thing being *if* - we don't want to hear "yes, the AI still sends 500,000 soldiers into Switzerland in December and lets them sit there dying of attrition, but, now you can change the name of your capital city to Heyeseyville!!"

Poor Giles-Wade

But Heyesey, you forget...
It would make sure there were no more "China" threads, where people discuss spelling, Giles-Wade interpretation and other fairly meaningless nonsense... :)
Then all those people who weren't satisfied with København being Copenhagen would just rename it themselves... :p

Seriously though, I'll take your better AI any time over a renaming option.

Renaming

Well, a renaming option for city and country names (I'm not talking about province names here) is not likely hard to program. All it needs is for the game to recognize a single click on the appropriate name and let the user enter a new one. I know it would seriously ruin the flavor for me to see "Muscovy" in 1700. If people don't think historical flavor is important for EU, might as well make everything random and have just another strategy game. For me, historical flavor is the defining element of EU.

Not if they haven't expanded any since 1419. A grand duchy is all they'd still be.

RE: Renaming

I agree with renaming stuff but only non-europian colonies. Everything in Europe and nations in Asia and elsewhere should remain the same..... OR be a one time deal that can be done once every 200 years. Also certain provinces/cities would never be renamed ie: Rome/London/Paris... capitals... major cities and the like. Just my two cents.

Nations could change historically... id agree with not leaving Moscowy if moscow remains a nation for more then 50 years.... however only historical names could occur..... i know we all wanna name are nations planet bob... but its not gonna happen ;)

You do me something of a dis-service here-I would never dream of doing that (you should see me with a map of ancient Italy or Greece open when playing Civ II!:D)

Name changes should only apply to colonies and the Americas (since that's what happened there.) I would personally be both annoyed and surprised if the option was available for old-world city provinces.

So which one did you like better:
Constantinople or Istanbul?
Leningrad or St. Petersburg?

Old world city names can and did change historically. However, I'm not too concerned with this bit of "chrome." If you wanted it to have an impact on gameplay... then add it to the diplomatic menu as a provocative option.

Sire: We have renamed Paris to "Stratford-upon-Seine;" our relationship with France has declined by a factor of 50!

It would be quite cool to rename old world cities as well... But its nothing extremely necessary of course! Examples would be, if you conquer London as France, you could call it Londres to prove its yours... or the much-quoted Gdansk/Danzig issue.

You make a good point-unfortunately both your examples are from the post EU period (in fact, the twentieth century) when political and national conditions are much different to the period in question.

Oh, and that's Leningrad, Petrograd, or St.Petersburg.

And St. Petersburg has got its' name back!:D

Can anyone come up with a good example for the EU2 period.....and the Gdansk-Danzig type are really a slightly different thing.

Right - the name change issues I listed are sort of spontaneous in the scheme of things since they reflect internal changes of the appropriate nation.

However, the Gdansk / Danzig thing reflects a change in ownership. Most of the potential name changes will be driven by defacto conquest.

I think I'll be satisfied if they just replace the Norwegian province "Vestfold" with "Vestlandet" as it should be. Vestfold is actually a smaller place much closer to the Swedish border (inside Østlandet).

It always puzzled me though, that some provinces would be in their native language while others were in English. More localization I say! Or else we'll just end up with a lot of names like "Land of the (insert people here)" or "Land of (insert geographical feature here)" which I'm sure sounds a lot less exciting than those exotic names they have now.:)
